I actually feel sorry for the GCU fans, this guy is seriously screwing this club and as a couple of people on the 442 forums said a failure of expansion on the Gold Coast would be bad news, considering the birth of an AFL team next year plus an NRL team that has been successful.

How can a guy who is putting up millions of his own be conceived to be "screwing the club"?
People may not like what GCU are doing but common sense dictates if they are losing $100,000 each home game then they need to do something about it. It may be more an issue for the cheif exec having cut a poor deal with the ground than Palmer himself. Something tells me they have got their budget horribly wrong here. This is certainly an issue for the league commissioner and the FFA. If he goes broke supporting the club then their is no future there anyway. Whether you like the guy or not at the end of the day the club has to be fiscally viable.

Have you seen the ticket prices?
Capping the crowd at 5,000?
Little or no Advertising?
The CEO saying it's fans fault that they only got 4ish thousand to the perth game?

The problem here, like Brisbane is that when the FFA offered to help negotiate deals for stadiums these idiots all thought they knew better.  Of course these same idiots didn't have the bargaining chip of Socceroos matches to beat the stadiums with so they got stung.

Palmer is all about playing political games, he hates the party in power in Queensland and considers their rivals his own personal political party so he's using football to score political points, at the same time being blinkered about the fact that he and the club f**ked up when they put this thing together.

Oh how I laugh when I remember the patronising way they (and some fans) started telling everyone else how to run their club.

Incidentally, no A-League club is fiscally viable.  Even Melbourne made a loss last season.  If Palmer thinks saving on crowd costs and upping the price for the limited fans he has will make his club viable he is an ill-informed numpty.  If he wanted his club to be viable he shouldn't be employing wives, offering houses and paying millions for a waste of space like Jason Culina.

I've got more, but I'll leave it there.

^^Has a point.

It's not Palmer's fault that he's completely useless at owning a football club.

Also... he's not going to go broke supporting the club, he's worth billions, billions and billions.  He won't even notice the losses.  The trouble is he is also an arrogant tosspot and won't listen to the advice of others, even if they are numpties like Buckley.

That message from Clive Plamer to the GCU members said it all. There wasn't a word of apology or any acknowledgement that they might be upset or inconvenienced by the changes. The guy has zero appreciation of customer service.

Is giving part of that $100,000 back to the fans i guess. He was probably being stubborn and saying "well if we have to pay 100k for this stadium, then the fans are paying for it not me...make tickets $50"

...and with the money Clive makes, the millions would either be written off as a tax loss, or covered by the interest he earns on his billions in the bank.

Either way, the money he has spent so far is chump change.

In comparison, Terry S is reported to be worth somewhere around NZ$145M in one of the local business mags. Terry has spent somewhere in the region of about $10M or so(I believe) on the Phoenix so far, and that's a much higher percentage of his personal wealth than what Clive would have spent.

In typical big-noting Australian style, Clive cares more about seeing his name in the media than he does about anything else.Ard Righ2009-10-29 22:11:05

Shane should beat his wife into submission and move back to Wellington.*

Clive Palmer and Miron Bleiberg are some of the biggest (esp. in case of Palmer) muppets around.  I hope the FFA step in and do something.  Could they revoke the licence and run the club themselves for a while until a slightly more intelligent person puts up their hand saying they'd be keen to run it?

Like somebody already said, how lucky are we to have Terry?  I can see so many players wanting out by the end of the season if not earlier.

*I don't condone domestic violence in any way, shape, or form, but the thought of Shane entering into a violent rage did amuse me.

I really hope that their next crowd is worse then anything the Knights got.

Thankfully the Knights never received a hiding that bad.

This really makes the Kingz/Knights look semi decent in comparison.

Oh yeah, Caravella and Fitsimmonds must be loving it, dejavoo for those boys

Major changes for saturday's game...

Gold Coast Prices Slashed At Last
Nov 4 2009 16:09

GOLD Coast United fans were today celebrating victory as ticket prices were slashed at Skilled Park, while the FFA denied subsidising billionaire owner Clive Palmer.
A new discounted rate for the remainder of regular season home games means category 3 adult tickets will be available from just $19, concession tickets from $12 and family tickets from a bargain price of $40.

And iIn a special promotion for this Saturday's clash with competition front-runners Sydney FC, supporters under 15 years of age will be allowed in for free, if accompanied by one paying adult.

The U-turn on ticket prices - which has seen them see-saw over the past three weeks - comes after the protest by fans against the club decision to shut three-quarters of the stadium last weekend while still charging more than any other club in the competition.

But Gold Coast United Chief Executive Clive Mensink now says the new price deal is "...a fantastic opportunity for the people of the Gold Coast to get behind their football team.

"We spoke to the fans and the people of the Gold Coast and they told us that they did not approve of the previous pricing structure," he said.

"These initiatives are in response to those concerns and we believe they make attending Gold Coast United games extremely attractive for families and football fans.

"The special promotion for this week's game against competition leaders Sydney FC is a great opportunity for people on the Gold Coast to experience live Hyundai A-League football.

"Anyone who has been thinking about attending a Gold Coast United game, but has not done so yet, is urged to take advantage of these new offers which are available through Ticketek.

"Our team led by Socceroo Jason Culina is sitting third on the competition table and will relish further support from the local community.

"Skilled Park is open for business and it has never been more affordable to enjoy top class football."

FFA sources have firmly refuted reports that the governing body had taken over paying the stadium rental fees in return for ticket revenue.

According to insiders, the FFA are supporting United with marketing expertise and personnel while helping to manage ticketing and marketing decisions.

But they are specifically not paying the ground rental at Skilled Park, a sticking point that was said to be costing Palmer $100,000 a game, and which led to the partial shutdown last weekend.

However if the crowds are sufficient to create a surplus, it's understood the FFA's marketing costs may be reimbursed under a revenue sharing scheme with the club.

Sources added that the reported losses said to have been incurred by the club to rent the ground had been "massively inflated".

But FFA insiders insist they will not be picking up any shortfall if the numbers don't cover costs at the 27,500-seater stadium.

Now with the whole stadium re-opened, Gold Coast United marquee star Jason Culina - who joined the call for all fans to be allowed in - want supporters to turn out in droves to back the team against table-toppers Sydney FC.

"The boys will get a huge lift from a big, vocal, Gold Coast crowd cheering us on in our match against Sydney this Saturday," he said.

"We want to turn our home ground into a cauldron of noise and send the message to other teams that they can't come up here to the Gold Coast and expect to have it all their own way.

"We desperately want to knock Sydney off their perch and we would all love to have as many people as possible to share in the spectacle.

"What a sight it would be for the team to emerge from the tunnel to a sea of gold shirts in the stands. Let's show Sydney how proud we are to be representing the Gold Coast."

In other innovations at the club, fans have also been told:

- United players are having a free BBQ with the fans this afternoon at the Southport Tigers ground from 5pm. GCU players are also running a 'Juggle the Ball' promotion outside Myers Pacific Fair tomorrow night from 5:30 pm. The club is promising more community events in weeks ahead.

- Fans at the game can also win the signed match ball for the forthcoming Asian Cup Qualifier between Australia and Indonesia signed by both captains. "To enter simply send a photo of you holding your ticket, or at the game with your full name to <!-- e -->promotions@footballaustralia.com.au<!-- e --> and tell us in 25 words or less why you stand behind Gold Coast United*

- The club have invited prominent fan's representatives from the local community to meet and discuss the way forward. They have also pledged to remain better engaged with the fans as the club moves forward.

- There will be a new ground announcer at Skilled Park.

- And there will be a band providing free pre-match entertainment outside the stadium this Saturday night.

Gold Coast United fan and au.fourourtwo.com blogger Gary Lord welcomed the new moves and added: ""There have been some great steps forward in the last 48 hours."
