GC United sack Paul Okon

David Lewis | February 23rd, 2010

Paul Okon has been sacked as assistant coach by Gold Coast United.

FORMER Socceroos skipper Paul Okon, the man tipped by Miron Bleiberg as a future national team coach when he arrived as his No.2 at Gold Coast United 16 months ago, has been sensationally axed by the club.

Okon, who had been promised a new deal by United CEO Clive Mensink a month ago, was today told his services were no longer required despite a stellar debut year on the training track and in the dugout.

Okon, 37, was front and centre at every United session this season and forged a close bond with the players and backroom staff, with the decision to let him go rocking the dressing room.

United were preparing to release a statement later today, just hours after Okon attended what turned out to be his last team meeting following the club's untimely exit from the A-League finals against Newcastle Jets at the weekend.

One unnamed player said: ``Paul was great with the boys on the training track and was very popular.

``Maybe he could have had a bit more infleunce on match days but perhaps Miron didn't want that. He's going to be a loss.''

It's believed that former fringe Socceroos midfielder Con Boutsianis, whose colourful career came to rest at Burleigh Heads, is being lined up as his successor.

Okon refused to comment today, pending the release of the club statement.

Either Miron is quite happy to see Okon go but is being diplomatic, or the board has seriously undermined its Manager. If it's the latter then Miron will not be far behind. From past experience, board's only get rid of assistant's when they want to fire a serious warning shot to the Manager but don't have the guts to sack him just yet.

By the same token, if Miron didn't want Okon gone and had integrity, he'd quit as well if the board go over his head like this. I dare say Okon will find a decent job elsewhere though.PaulSG2010-02-23 21:47:14

Rumour is that he was the one calling the shots and doing the work while Miron is just a haircut, fake tan and mouthpiece.

Also rumours that Okon is incompetent when it comes to man management.

Rumours mind, not fact.

It was Okon at the training sessions.

If they give that convict the job that will be another reason to dislike them.
Give him plenty from me when he comes to Wellington.

About  nine years ago "the Con" was given probation after being the driver in the armed robbery in Melbourne of "The Shark Fin Restaurant."
He subsequently signed for the Kingz (shows how desperate they were) but then became one of the most unpopular overseas players to ever sign for a NZ club by refusing to play for them.
After the Kingz allowed him to go back to South Melbourne, part of the deal was that he wouldn't play against the Kingz- but could you trust "The Con"? Course not- he took the field and scored the winning goal condemning the Kingz to last on the table below South Melbourne!!!
And that's the man Gold Coast has faith in?
There was no doubting he had some ability as a player- I think he played some first team games for Bolton Wanderers in the Cup from memory- but remains an enigma.

By the way, Con Boutsianis is listed below "con artist" in definitions in the Free Online Dictionary (below). Clicking on his name below brings up his Wikipedia entry, which adds to our reasons to dislike him by noting that "the Con," in scoring the winning goal in the 1997 NSL Final against Carlton, fouled All Whites defender Sean Douglas: "Boutsianis seemed to push Douglas to the ground before collecting the ball and proceeding to beat [the] Carlton goalkeeper."   Comyn
