From my dim old memory, the Roar under Miron were funny. It was basically play at 200 miles per hour and throw everybody forward. They would have about 8 million shots in every game and never score. At least that's how I remember them. Jag2009-01-08 15:36:47

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

A classic Mironism from when he was at the Raw:

The team was sh*te (as per) and amongst calls for him to get the sack, a reporter asked him if he was worried about gettin the push... he replied (along the lines of) that he drove his Mercedes into training that day... and whatever happens he'll be driving his Mercedes next week, whether to training or not... the numb nuts reporter had nothing (and it was repeated across the media ad nauseum for days!).

He's a publicity machine, thats why he's there... he isn't there for his coaching ability - nor to be a coach... he's there because he is ridiculously positive under any circumstances and generates headlines like most coaches can only dream of - which is perfect for a new club in a very competitive market like SEQ.

Palmer didn't get where he is by being a mumpty. Okon will be the coach rather swiftly I'd expect...

Yeah neither am I now. It was looking certain but now it looks like he just used the GC to get a better deal at PSV.

Look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miron_Bleiberg looks like a reasonably accurate write up.

He's probably as good a coach as RH and others in the A League, had a fair bit of success in State football before the A League came around.

...of course, that's one of two goals he's ever scored for PSV . According to wikipedia he scored a bit for FC Twente though, 12 from 38 appearances.

Anyway, he does of course play as a defensive mid for the Socceroos, and is not really the marquee you'd expect for a team that is supposed to all flair and attack.

He's certainly a quality player by A-League standards should GC United actually get him.

Are you taking the piss?

Miron the mouth is good for one thing and one thing only - publicity. He is a walking quote machine ala Nigel Clough and his team play the most irratic frenzied football you'll ever see, with no structure.

Great character guy, nice a smily and all that jazz but couldn't coach a team of tap dancing hamsters.

Young man, go do some homework on Queensland Roars 1st coach....

This is supposedly where things are at with GC,  The Sydney Morning Herald are now reporting that Culina has signed.  Sounds like a few sweeteners are being thrown at wives with high paying jobs in Mr Palmer's mining companies (a practice again which surely needs to be outlawed, or the payments included in the third party arrangements) and the promise for Culina of an "ambassadorial role" with the mining company after his playing days are over. So he's all but signed unless someone ridiculous comes in for him, i.e United or Madrid which aint gonna happen.  They are spending a lot on a guy who can't pass it forwards and isn't a goal scorer but he is a current Socceroo so there probably is some value there in an off field sense.

I find that interesting as in the NRL salary cap the warriors were penalised for promising coaching spots within the club to I think Steve Price.  I know that the A-League salary cap is similar so may be interesting to know the legality of that one.

Sterjovski certainly doesn't sound like a done deal, but here is a lits of current players supplied by a GC guy on another forum.

- Jess Vanstrattan
- Scott Higgins

- Adam Griffiths
- Daniel Piorkowski
- Michael Thwaite
- Bas Van den Brink ?

- Zenon Caravella
- Matthew Osman
- James Brown
- Steve Fitzsimmons
- Steve Pantelidis
- Richard Greer
- "Robson" Alves da Silva
- "Jefferson" Charles de Souza Pinto
- Jason Culina ?
- Mile Sterjovski ?

- Shane Smeltz
- "Milson" Ferreira Dos Santos
- Tahj Minniecon
- Andrew Barisic
- Joel Porter

Unsurprisingly it looks like a side signed by someone who doesn't think about what is going on on the park.  Very light/weak at the back and with no depth, other than up front.  The presence of Steve Fitzsimmons and Zenon Caravella in midfield says it all really.

Palmer won't get credit until the team gets results.

My point is simply that Miron is the right man (publicity) in the right place (Goldie) at the right time (gaining exposure for a new brand in a very competitive market)... that will change once the football commences... as will the coach.

Surely being their marquee, they can throw whatever money + sweetners they like at him.

Question mark by Porter to but it looks unlikely he will not go to them. You also forgot Rees at the back.

I didn't make that list by the way, that was copied from a GC fan.  He mentioned that some of the initial players mentioned haven't actually signed contracts and may now find that things have moved on from initial indications, so perhaps Rees isn't locked down.

Culina is good for the league definitely, but knocking back a champions league club does show a lack of ambition doesn't it?

where the hell did you get the idea that Nigel Clough was a walking quote machine?

Even if you mean Brian Clough, you have to admit that he is more than a walking quote machine, what with taking Derby County from the 2nd division to European Cup semi final (losing to Juve side that were proved to have bribed the ref) and winning the European twice with Nottingham Forest.

Yes you are right. I did mean Brian. Tongue slip.

I was referring to the quoting part specifically. As far as football managerial skills go, even getting into a discussion comparing the two is just laughable

Craig Moore even tried to retire and they took him back, fair to say the A-League hasn't changed the fact he has a role with the 'roos.

Given a decent manager Gold Coast would tear the league up. Be interesting to see how they do next season, at least they'll play some attacking football.

I thought Rees was already confirmed... we'll see what happens next week I guess.

3 X ??  An exaggeration surely,  it is reported as 1.8 there to 1.1 here, (plus whatever the wife gets)

He may also be the one to break the non A League for the Socceroos, time will tell..

I had heard that it was the job offer for the missus that finally swayed the Culina deal. Plus they both were sick of freezing their asses off in winter in Holland ....so there is a bit of lifestyle reason as well. Who could blame them....youv'e done your stint in the bigtime in Europe...its minus 15 degrees outside and you have got to go to training and them some t**ser offers you $3.5 million to play 20 odd games a year for a pub/beach team in Australias premium summer resort area. Duh! .....show me the money!!!!!

Seriously though...thats a quality signing. Wouldn't complain if he was in the Phoenix midfield. tHe A-League can only get better with these sort of players coming here!

I actually sat at Suncorp and watched the Roar play every 2nd week in V1 and 2, so I probably have seen more of his coaching style than you. Along with the average 15,000 fans, I largely enjoyed what I saw and stand by my comment that he is probably a good a coach as many others in the A League.

I disagree... and I also sat at Sunny for most games in V1,2 & 3... his team looked great, and played positively, though didn't score the goals they should have done)... lots of passing, fairly young squad and quick (Michael Baird, Jonti Richter, Simon Lynch or Chad Gibson anybody?- didn't think so lol) but a couple of 'name' players that didn't fire... and no penetration where and when it mattered... oh crap - am I talking about the Raw, or the Gunners?

Sorry, disagree with who? you sound like you agree with me..... If he gets a good squad together, on the back of what you're saying, we could see something good?

I disagree in as much as I don't think he's a good coach... his squad at the Roar lacked balance and goal scoring penetration (though, to be fair a few strikers didn't live up to their reps) and ran around passing the ball and dominating long periods of matches without scoring goals and often being caught out on the break... you were there, you saw it too...

I can see the same thing happening again (or am I just being hopeful? lol) in terms of a squad with a high dependence on 5/6 key players but lacking in depth to cover injuries and/or loss of form... Having Porter/Smeltz/Minniecon & Culina is all well and good but if any two of those players aren't on the pitch for whatever reason, and your defense is poor - you will struggle...

In saying that, their stadium will be a huge positive... if they get 10k+ in there (which clearly, they will) it creates an atmosphere (it only holds 28k) and the crowd is right on the pitch, so it will be a tough place to play for visiting teams... the feral Queenslanders will be spitting their XXXX on them!!!

Am looking forward to it!!!
