Gold Coast - talking the talk now walking

So gold coast are set to announce Jason Culina and Mije Sterjovski and are putting together a very impressive first 11 (although of course the brazilians are a risk).

That's fine, salary cap MUST be under some pressure. Then I read this paragraph in the SBS article:

"Attacking midfielder Sterjovski, 29, is being lured on a loan deal, with United prepared to offer a $600,000 fee to Championship outfit Derby, leaving them to pick up just the remaining $400,000 of his $1million annual income.
The arrangement, which is exempt from the restrictions of the $2.5million salary cap, is similar to the one which brought fringe Socceroo Michael Thwaite - now also bound for Gold Coast - to Melbourne Victory for the season with the agreement of his parent club SK Brann."

Now can someone please explain to me how that works, and give some reasonable explanation how it is not a salary cap rort? What happens next season? Is this an option for us to get Chris Killen back?

Impressive though, the stakes have most definitely been raised, although their biggest impediment is still Bleiberg the mouth who still talks a good game without ever having delivered. james dean2009-01-08 10:05:08

Sterjovski is currently playing in Derby's 1 - 0 lead over Man U in Carling Cup. Live on BBC. Will he really want to come to Oz?

Rediculous that annual payments towards the salaries of loaned players aren't counted in the salary cap. Good to see more quality players coming to the A-League, but it's hardly fair on the other clubs if loan payments are exempt!

Oioi read the SBS link on the front page, they're reporting it as a done deal. They also said that he was being frozen out so perhaps the change of manager may cause him to have a rethink.

Personally I think he's a fairly average player, maybe a better version of sasho petrovski.

But seriously, I just don't understand this at all...

It would be good to see some clarification... kinda makes the whole point of the salary cap redundant and becomes a pissing competition amongst the owners... which is not what we want to see (even if our owner can pee the furtherest lol)... we'll become a (very) mini EPL... tho if the FFA add  pro/rel that'll make MBH a cappy hamper

It gives an unnatural advantage to loan deals, which only encourages short term thinking anyway

The article is rubbish.

Apparently Sterjovski is off contract at the end of this season so there is one HUGE innacurracy in it.  Other articles are saying that if Culina falls through that Sterjovski is second choice, not that they will sign both.

Oh no, agree entirely.  No idea why they bother with a salary cap if it only applies to a couple of teams.

Seems like GC are just putting everyone's name out there so that when they get one it makes B&P look like excellent recruiters whom could sign anyone by clicking their fingers.

Those kind of deals are potantially quite detrimental to the league. How are Perth ever going to get better on their tight budget if the other clubs are spending potentially millions on a type of transfer that was obviously never considered by the people that designed the salary cap?

does this free Porter at all do you think? also, you think he's good enough? I've never seen him play but I believe he must be decent if Tony P and Terry have been trying to sign him up for 2 years.

They are batting over 95%...  although this one is the news agencies not my sauces.  My Sauces have some good stuff currently but your scoffing means you are no longer in the loop.

Culina is a terrific player and it's strange that he is coming back when he is still in the PSV first team with the World Cup only a couple of years away.

Sterj isn't as good but has scored some crackers for the Socceroos and would be one of the best players in the league.

Might as well just scrap the damn salary cap - GC aren't paying any attention to it anyway..

Some numpty has changed his Wikipedia page to put CGU under teams played for.

I'd ask where he would play with all these other strikers that thay have on the books. Smeltz and Porter aren't going over there to sit on the bench and collect the coin (ok maybe they are, it is Gold Coast)

This article on Porter is discouraging, though nothing's set in stone till the contracts are signed.

I can agree somewhat Scottishbhoy but I think for the last 4 years in the A-League, we heard the hype from Adshead, then Nevin about squads and what they have signed and having players trumpeted all around. Last year there was a bit of hype from the Phoenix but not to the same degree as the Knights and with it being their first year and rushed together, I think they get a mulligan for that one. This year we got a bit of it again but the thing I like about Tony P is that he has been very measured with his words so not soo much 'over hype'

Signing talent is all well and good but can they play together? I liken it buying 6 wheels for a car when it only needs 4 and find out you've forgotten about seatbelts and a stearing wheel. The 6 wheels do you f**k all without the rest as the Bling are finding out.

Lets see what they do on the pitch first before we start peeing our pants.

I was reading something last night about Hayden Foxe being an EPL player. I bet Perth pushed the sh*t out of that and what has he done.....

Romario in Adelaide was another and what did he do....

As long as they've got Miron in charge they'll win f**k all no matter who they sign!

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

He's not called Miron the Mouth for nothing. Known more for his personality than his coaching and to be fair, he is quite a colourful and endearing character if nothing else for the game of football

Whats he like compared to Kosmina?

If Bleiberg got fired tomorrow, he would smile, say thats football and he did it his way.

If Kosmina got fired tomorrw, he would blame everybody else and still insist that his team were the best in the league for 90mins over 21 games except on the goal count (which were lucky)
