The only question that matters: will Devlin catch up to Davila ?

Over rated in my option, cost us the game against Roar and was flat vs City.

Well that's it then no one elses "option" matters. Clearly the Tobin board is completely wrong. All hail Royz - the oracle has spoken.

I see US border is closed until around June 23rd (to non-US citizens/residents), and the ESTA Visa scheme (an ESTA Visa is required to transit through the USA), is currently suspended until that time.

So that seems very earliest Davila could return to Australia/NZ.

You would think it's more than likely he will join up with his Nix team mates in Australia, rather than fly into NZ, and do 2 weeks self isolation in a hotel room. That's given the idea that Nix will finish 2019/2020 season at a base in Oz.

Although it is a longer trip he could fly from Mexico with Latam via Santiago to Auckland, avoiding the US altogether.

Maybe he could but flight options within Latin America are also currently very limited. I’m in Peru, and Lima Airport is shutdown.
Santiago Airport I understand is still operating, but think the Mexico border is currently closed.

Though yeah by July will definitely be a few more flights happening, and some borders opening up.

Its a shame air nz have completely cancelled their Argentina flight. His best bet would be to try and get to Australia and meet the team there. Hooper has further to go.

I wish he was a dickhead. Would make the loss of him far easier to take. But you’re right, he’s a class act on and off the field and had to deal with some horrendous trauma.

Rotten luck for him and a misfiring MacArthur. Will miss not seeing him in action for the rest of the season. He's one of those players I can watch for hours and never stop enjoying his beautiful skills and fantastic football brain.

Yeah  the amount of goodwill he had around the league was huge. They even made a a league all access episode just about him. He'd have gone down in history as one of the league greats and would have made a good living in the a league after he retired.

Considering he was one of the highest paid players in the league and had ao much to lose as a solo father,  its unfathomable,

The piece in all this that is missing is why he made this decision.
Baccus and Lewis were 'coerced' by Davilla. So who targeted Davilla?
Who, would have been an easy mark, given his situation. As with all of these kind of scenarios its the foot soldiers that get nabbed and face justice but the actual money behind the operation is never found or stopped.

There's a noticeable difference in hate levels in this thread compared to the Clayton Lewis thread.

Mind you, it's only 23 hours since Ryan bounced this thread with the above post. Plenty of time I guess.

The thing is when you look at Pogba, you never know what these guys are dealing with.

They might be getting 6 figures a week, but suddenly they’re public property. If they play up noveau riche they’re not professional, if they buy a house for their mum with taps (reported the daily mail) they’re somehow class traitors and if they’re at a famous club (bought on its own equity in a dodgy deal that attracts far too little ire), they’re a waste of money, dead weight and so on.

That’s leaving aside kidnapping, extortion and anything else attracted to excessive wealth, that we’ve no way of knowing about.

From "Stuff" headline

"Former Wellington Phoenix player Ulises Davila admits role in spot-fixing scheme"

Now what that headline should read is:

"Former MacArthur Captain Ulises Davila admits role in spot-fixing scheme."

But no, those nonces have to take another shot at the Nix. I hope the Club go after them because that headline suggests by infurence that it may have involved the Nix.

I know Stuff is full of puff pieces and PC as hell, but really? Lazy Journalism or a cheap shot? They need to be held accountable.

How long do you think Davila should spend in jail pal? 15 years?

Three for me, and two for them.

given he admitted what he did up front, id give him some dispensation - but he still deserves jail time.
Lewis deserved so much more than the slap on the wrist he got, even if he was coerced and targetted by Davilla, he denied everything, then played the victim card.
Davilla on the other hand has not thrown any por me stories out there, when realistcally he has some of the best material to justfy his criminality.

No way he will do jail time, especially since the story is that they only did it once, which works well for all interested parties (i.e , it doesn't open a massive can of worms).
He will probably get a light conviction but won't serve, especially being the only caregiver to his son etc.

I would say actually organizing a match-fixing ring like this deserves a bit of jail time (under a year), unless they were literally threatening to kill his family or something like that

The statements are that Lewis and Baccus only did it once.

But Davila? Don't think I have read any statements by his lawyer. Ulises was the ring leader, but he may have initially been getting paid $10K for dodgy yellows solo, before then looking to bring in others.

You read the below article and it appears Lewis offended in the one game verus SFC. But the article also talks about Macarthur games (plural) where NSW Police suspect this spot fixing occurred.

Davila's crime(s) are more serious. I can see him getting gaol time. It's not uncommon at all in Latino culture for the grandparents or extended family to basically raise children. His son will be well cared for if he does have to do time.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360835948/how-all-white-clayton-lewis-became-embroiled-australian-footballs-biggest-spot-fixing-scandal

Influenceable
In sporting parlance, Lewis was a last minute ring-in to the scheme that would have long-lasting implications for his career. He was never supposed to be a part of it.

The Crown case alleges the 'point man' of the scheme was Ulises Davila - the captain of the Macarthur team and one of the A-League's most respected players, having in 2022 led the Bulls to a title just months after the death of his wife.

Court documents reveal Davila was in contact with a 'controller' - an organised crime figure in South America - who requested the player arrange for "certain events to occur within games to permit illegal gambling".
