wonder what sort of philosophy Popovich is going to try, and if he will be able to implement it with the limited players he has.

Surely build your team around Mooy, by all acounts he is a very talented attacking midfielder.

It was a night to remember for Western Sydney Wanderers FC and the perfect debut for the Hyundai A-League’s newest club.

A 5-0 victory over Nepean FC came in front of over 3,500 supporters. Four goals for triallist striker Joe Gibbs complemented a stylish midfield display from Qantas Young Socceroo Aaron Mooy in what was a highly satisfactory first outing for Wanderers FC Head Coach Tony Popovic’s growing squad.

Nepean FC are in the 4th teir of football in NSW, so not sure much can be read into the score line. The RBB had their first chance to rip some flares.

The richest sponsorship in the A-League, and a five-year deal to play at Parramatta Stadium described by one insider as ''low risk''. A day after their first-ever match drew a healthy crowd and ended in a five-goal romp, the good news kept coming for Western Sydney Wanderers, who unveiled their inaugural away strip into the bargain.

If Cockerill's figures are right, 2+ mil over 3 years, that is one heck of a sponsorship.

I think this is a great sign for the A League. After all the problems with club finances over the last couple of years its good to see a healthy sponsorship/stadium combo for the new club. Now to see what their crowd levels are like once the immediate novelty wears off...

In other news Filippo Inzaghi has officially retired from the game, so we won't be seeing him in a unicorn shirt.

Shame, he would've carved the A-League.

@piignata9 On the football front. Good display by @sydnetfc Plenty to be excited about for the up coming season #ramsydfc

RBB have just shot themselves in the foot with that. Gorman isn't exactly fond of active support, and now he has to come down hard to try and save face with the public. Last thing a new club needs and sets the image of the league back years.

So their away strip is red and white with white socks, and Heart's home and away strips are red and white with white socks.

Their home strip is red and black, as is Adelaide's away strip

Post from the Sydney Forums
This was all after the 'offensive' banners had been taken down. Massive police over-reaction to one cracker. They had police dogs running in at full tilt. One idiot let off a firecracker (not a flare and not a smoke bomb), the security and police move in, batons raised, pepper spray going and start attacking the United supporters. Massive over-reaction. They cleared the entire bay for no reason.

Tom Smithies had left before half-time, clearly had nothing more on his mind but another beat-up.

As for the match itself, United got extremely lucky.  Their first was a very scrappy and lucky pinball inside the box after a corner.

Their players were diving all night (#7 was a disgrace), and the ref fell for it eventually, then ordered a re-take after it was saved. Typical a-league shite on display in the ref department.
Can't seem to find a team list for Sydney United or who scored the goals. I assume Pavlovic would be #7 because that is his number for the NSWPL games.

5 year ban for trouble makers. FFA get tough

I think the FFA have to be very careful that they don't overreact here - there is a PR war to be won in Sydney/Melbourne media.

On the one hand these idiots need to be dealt with.  That can be done quietly and with the clubs involved.  On the other hand they need to get a handle on the negative press involved with any disturbance at a football match vs what goes on at other sports in Australia.  Go to a cricket match in Aussie or the races and by the end of the day you see some of the worst behaviour imaginable.  The FFA needs to do a better job of defending football as a game without becoming apologists for the individuals concerned.

It's a tricky balance but these 5 year bans for what really doesn't seem like a particularly big deal risks making it appear that there is a bigger problem with the sport than there is.

Can we start calling WSW "Bogan Hobos" - seems an apt derivation of their name.

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

27 Sep 11:23

Behind the scenes at the Bogan Hobo's Press HQ:

Day 13: Release "Tomorrow, as engaging the community is key to everything WSW stands for, we'll be having a community engagement opportunity so that footballing community feels suitably engaged"

Day 14: Release: "We're currently engaging the community at our Parramatta community engagement, if you're part of the community, and want to be engaged, come on down"

Day 15: Release "Our thanks go to all the local community who were in engaged in yesterday's WSW community engagement, we look forward to further engagement of the community in our next community engagement opportunity at some godforsaken sports oval in somewhere in Boganville, thus ensuring that every community, whether they want to or not, is appropriately engaged in our never-ending community engagement programme"

Day 16: Release"Player signings: We feel that it isn't our priority to sign internationally renowned players as this type of player is unlikely to encourage engagement from the community, we're mostly after bogan players who come from the wider bogan community that are likely to enhance further community engagement"

I think they're going to have to come up with a pretty decent line about where the cash is coming from.  I do understand why they've gone for a marquee though, Sydney have forced their hand a bit

This guy is going to have to earn his spot based on ability though because I'm not sure he's the big name going to get the random punter on board.  Others are speculating about Japanese TV rights with him and ADP popular in Japan.  Interesting logic...

From what people are saying on other forums, it suggests Ono's star power has waned. So it probably wouldn't be a huge drawcard for the Japanese audience.
