From 442... some folks might remember Timmy V from his visit last year when Newcastle were in town.  I know one of the others in the five as well.  Con

FFA Probe Jets Boss Flare-Up
Jan 19 2009 13:10

EXCLUSIVE: Football Federation Australia have launched an investigation after Newcastle Jets boss Con Constantine allegedly threatened to throw a fan off the balcony at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
Jets fans in the Squadron staged a protest over Newcastle's dismal defence of the A-League Championship this season by hanging their banners upside down at this weekend's game against Perth Glory.

But midway through the second half, security were ordered to take down the banners and five fans including Tim Verschelden, president of the Squadron, were summoned to Con's private box.

"Con abused every one of us, telling us we were nobodies, that we were worthless and threatening to ban Tim for life if he so much as opened his mouth, not to mention threatening to throw him off the balcony," said FourFourTwo blogger, Nigel Bosworth, one of those summoned.

"I have never in my life seen a more pathetic display. No one should ever have to put up with that sort of abuse, let alone the most loyal supporters of the club.

"It was a disgusting display and has forever widened the distance between the club and its supporter base."

He added: "The situation came about because wed hung our banners upside down.

"[It was] a relatively benign form of protest, not aimed specifically at anyone, just a message stating were not happy.

"Given the state of the team on and off the pitch I dont think anyone can say we are out of line with our mild protest. Were not getting violent, were not ripping flares.

"It disgusts me to see a club that I support, and that represents the town I grew up in, be so low to people over an issue as trivial as a few banners turned upside down.

"Many of us have had a go at the club over their problems in the past few weeks, but up until the events that witness on Sunday, we've held out hope that this was just an anomaly, just a bad year in the rollercoaster-ride history of football in Newcastle.

"I dont think its possible to repair the damage done by this man, at least not in the short term."

Today the FFA confirmed they were aware of the reported confrontation and would be taking it further.

"This alleged incident has been brought to our attention and we are looking in to it," said a spokeswoman.

Newcastle Jets declined to comment or deny the events when contacted by au.FourFourTwo.com.

it's absolutely disgusting. I'm of course rejoicing in the Jets unsuccessfull season, but from the fans point of view I reckon they should all defect to some other club!!

Especially given the Jets transfer policy (i.e. sell all our good players except from the 2 Griffiths and that other bloke who's leaving at the end of the season, and then only keep Joel for next year). I mean, what did they think they were gonna achieve??!!

but doesn't someone have to come last every season?  Do their fans have a right to stage protests about it?

I think the fans (sorry, "most loyal supporters of the club") are a bunch of f**kwits, who should have been focusing on supporting their team as opposed to trying to let everyone know that they are not happy with the way the season has gone.  Do they think the board are happy?  the players?

More than just the results on the park.
Seems like the club has been badly managed, with a lot of players from last years' winning squad not there anymore.

I am sure that the poor management has not been done on purpose - just decisions have been made that in hindsight have turned out to be wrong.

There has been cases in the UK where people have taken over a club to asset strip it for profit (even though I cannot think of any off the top of my head) where protesting, attacking the owners, bags of dog sh*t on fire on the front porch, etc are acceptable.  Otherwise it is just a case of the instant gratification generation where people "pay there money and demand results".

I'd hate to be standing underneath if he managed it

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I would offer my assistance and believe between the two of us we could actually achieve this incredible feat....

I'm loving this at the moment.

Ever since the prick stole the NSL Lisence from the Newcastle Breakers by speading mistruths and by being in bed with Labbozetta and Co I have been waiting for this to happen.

The guy has no idea what he's doing! Ask a few of our former Jets players that we currently have on the books and they will tell you what they think too...

Frankie - yeah sure, there always will be a team that gets the wooden spoon. But there are several ways of coming last. Take us for example, nobody said a word last year because we actually put in a number of very good performances and lost many games by 1, 2 goals.

Sure, the defence was shaky but we had a heck of style going forward. Plus the team had been assembled with A-League oldies/youngsters and renegades, plus a handful of Brazilians...and did remarkably well!

How would you feel if, after winning the league, all your best players minus 2/3 left the club??
I mean, surely after you win the A-League you get a lot of coverage/prestige and you should be going upwards, not down. You still have to deal with salary cap, expenses etc, but you have a great "image" to sell. Players would love to play for the champions, and sponsors would get wet at the thought of having their name printed on your shirt!

What happened to Newcastle this year is the opposite. And it's beautiful! Let's hope Melbourne will be next! :)

This sort of behavior makes me thanful that we have a decent managemnt structure for our team. If the fans ask a question, or are disappointed we get an answer from our CEO within a day or two of the issue being raised. We are very very lucky I think.

It's got nothing to do with the management structure, it's about the ownership structure.

And our ownership structure is exactly the same as the Jets - one guy owns the lot.

Terry S has been great so far but don't you think it's still a little bit risky that the club's whole future is based on the goodwill and generosity of one individual? If he has a bad business deal, or starts to feel the effects of the recession, or gets hit by a bus (god forbid) then the Phoenix is gone unless someone else steps up.

It would be good in the future to see Terry bring in some capital from elsewhere (maybe even the fans) just to spread the risk. On the other hand, the fact that he hasn't been tempted to do this yet is perhaps the most positive sign of his commitment to the club.
