I have a lot of sympathy for Tinkler. Just seems to me the FFA decided to use him as a cash cow. That acquisition fee was completely immoral.

Makes you realise how badly things could have gone for us had Rob and Gareth and co not stepped in to take over the club.

I have always wondered if they paid a fee for the Phoenix. That seems to be the root cause of this Tinkler problem.

Going on what FFA told Tinkler, the market cost for an up and running club is $5million, so they should have payed that if what they told Tinkler is true.

Except it was less than $5m for the new owners in Brissy and rAdelaide. Hence the big man is a little unpleased. FFA seemingly trying to milk the big boys.

No pun intended.

Meanwhile the FFA bigwigs get paid more than bosses in any other code in Australia. That would irk you slightly if you were an owner having to pour millions into your club.

It really is a terrible model.

Hoping this is just Tinkler trying to play hardball. He pulled out of buying the Knights before they bought them. As Kevin Airs pointed out on Twitter, the FFA giving him back the purchasing fee would be cheaper than running the club themselves.

I think there would be a reasonable chance of that. How many contracts do they have running through to the end of next season?

Buckley: "A club cannot hand back a licence, the HSG has a legally binding contract to June 2022 to field a team in the A-League."

BB: "We're very surprised and very disappointed by the action taken by HSG. We were only informed 15 minutes before press announcement."

BB: "The constant assertions by the HSG that were we not willing to meet is just nonsense. You cannot just hand back a licence."

BB: Yes we've some issues around financial performance with some clubs...[but] I don't accept private ownership doesn't work.

Christ not even a 10 team league if there is a league at all next season!!
I can't believe another club looks to go down the gurgler.
Even if Tinkler is legally bound to control the club until 2020 it doesn't mean he can't field a team of cheap with no resources and no promotion. GCU all over again.
This is crazy, I'm shocked that another club is failing.
How long can we keep this up, the list of failed clubs will soon be longer than the list of clubs that still exist.

Football Federation Australia Limited (FFA) was today informed by the Hunter Sports Group that Newcastle Jets Football Operations Pty Ltd (Newcastle Jets) is seeking to relinquish its license to operate the Newcastle Jets football club in the Hyundai A-League.

FFA does not accept that the Newcastle Jets have the right to return their A-League licence.

FFA expects that the Jets will continue to honour the Club Participation Agreement with FFA, which is for a term expiring on 30 June 2020.

FFA also expects that the Jets will continue to honour the playing contracts in place with each of their players.

FFA CEO Ben Buckley today expressed his dismay at HSGs announcement.

HSG has made repeated undertakings to the people of the Hunter Valley about their commitment to building football and helping the community in Newcastle and the region, Mr Buckley said.

There are players, coaches, members and supporters who put their heart into making the club a vibrant part of the Hunter Valley.

Todays announcement makes no sense for all those people and for the other clubs in the Hyundai A-League. They can rightfully feel let down.

Mr Buckley said that no grounds exist for the Newcastle Jets to unilaterally walk away from its obligations.

FFA has held countless hours of discussions with HSG on a wide range of issues affecting the club and the A-League, said Mr Buckley.

The Jets know very well that the Jason Culina matter is subject to arbitration before an independent panel of arbitrators in accordance with the Grievance Procedure and that a hearing is scheduled.

The issues surrounding the operating model of the league and its clubs were addressed just a fortnight ago when all clubs were shown a road map towards sustainability.

In addition, the clubs will have a greater say through the A-League Strategic Committee, which has equal FFA and club representation.

The FFA chairman Frank Lowy and I have made numerous offers to meet in person with Nathan Tinkler. Just two weeks ago a scheduled meeting was cancelled by HSG at short notice.

However, none of this provides a justification for todays announcement by HSG or provides any grounds for the Newcastle Jets to relinquish their licence.

I think Buckley's response saying Tinkler can't hand back the license is too aggressive. He was ambushed but now is the time to be diplomatic. This isn't like Palmer, Tinkler is not acting like a prat. He seems to have a valid grievance and has been good for the game in that area, they should be wanting to keep guys like that on board.

Yeah I agree, a pretty agressive response. Also that above quite doesn't seem to suggest they're working together.

Another way to think about it is that Tinkler was an idiot for not doing due diligence.

Its hard to believe they wouldn't work closer with the guys who actually put money into the game. No owners, no A league.
They either have to work closer with owners, or come up with a more sustainable model for the league (which is something the owners want, so again - its in their interests to work closer with them).

Its not rocket science.

I'm not so sure about the validity of his grievance and that he's not acting like a prat. Sure, he's by no means in the same league as Tinkler the fat sh*t, but this does seem like a total ambush. Buckley is spot on that it's pretty rough on the fans and the players etc.

At the moment it's all 'he said, she said' and I wouldn't go rushing to defend either side.

Which valid grievance is that?
I'm not so sure. Tinkler's actions seem pretty aggressive to me, throwing in the towel completely out of the blue hours before the A-league awards, before the TV deal is signed and making out like the FFA abused him until he left.
Maybe the FFA should have responded softer but when someone reneges on a contract the knee-jerk response to say "hey you can't do that!"
Maybe 5mil was a bit much for a license but this seems like a bit of a tantrumesque response.
