Looked ugly for the German-born, Australian-raised, New Zealand-international. Tackle contained in highlights below if you don't know what I'm saying. I thought he was a clean player, but I've got a dimmer view on the Gold Coast raised man as a result of this tackle. Let's hope he doesn't pull that out at the World Cup. Undisciplined Shane, undisciplined.

There is another article somewhere saying he meant to go in hard, but not to get his ankle like that and that he and Fyfey are old friends and he's rung and apologised for it.

Red though...  like Muscat's kick on Thompson.

Smeltz has been the one of the most consistent foulers in the A League. He is leading the stats this year with 50 fouls and has been in the top 5 each season.

Apparently he did that foul to try and rev his team mates up, to get them more into the game, follow my example lads.

Not a nice thing to do to your mate, Ian Fyfe

I had to double take at that tackle. I thought it was Feverish at first!

Definately RED!

This thread isn't complete without 'hard' players/fans whinging about how the game has gone soft and there is nothing wrong with that challenge.

Stonewall red. 3 week ban.

Three for me, and two for them.

Should have been a red.  Fortunately for him he got the yellow which should mean he won't have the match reviewers onto him.

I'm all for strong challenges.  I get pissed off if a player wins the ball but the tackled player falls over in the process resulting in a free kick.  But this was completely different, landed right on his ankle.

OK then. How about Jamie Harnwell's Amateur Theatrical?

I'll be very pissed if he doesn't receive a ban from the Match Committee for diving!

Reckless play merits a caution.

Oh, wait, it was Judas?  Then a life ban, obviously.  That's in the Laws of the Game, isn't it?

He could have just said "lift your games boys" an ankle breaker on an off-field "mate" ain't the best way to lift the team I would have thought.

Looks undiscliplined to me (Muscat's tackle on Thompson was more calculated, but still he's damn lucky to stay on the field though, can't disagree with HN there).

Yeah, but let's face it. A big tackle can get the crowd on their feet etc. I'm not saying that particular tackle was okay, because it wasn't, but I was interested to hear Molby and Alonso talking and Molby said something like "Gerrard sometimes makes unnecessary tackles which get him booked, like against Real Madrid (on R*mos). It is pretty needless and stupid." And Alonso said "Yeah, but sometimes these tackles can get the crowd excited which in turn amps the players up- or just purely gets the players that bit more focussed." So a simple "Lift your game" might not really work.

Smeltz broke Neil Young's nose last night, didn't look deliberate but geez, 2 tackles involving Shane in 2 consecutive games and 2 injured players that had to go off for treatment.

Hmmm...

It wasn't a tackle, it was a typical striker goes for ball, keeper comes out head first, snaffles ball and cops it in the head accidently. sh*t happens, completely different situation, no Hmmmmmm.

In saying that, and as I said in the match thread, ouch!
