Honestly, I can't see why everyone is so surprised.  Leo's one A-League goal was amessy goal mouth scramble.  He's a superb player but like Ferrante gets the yips in front of goal.

My heart lept when we broke and then I saw it was Leo and I went 'damn'.  I love the boy and think he's a huge asset to the club but even he knows he is terrified of being in on goal.  It's kind of silly really as for the reserves the other week against Hawkes Bay he had no problem at all, but when he gets on the stadium it goes wrong for him.

Honestly I think he'll go, but I don't know whether GC, AU or maybe even back to Europe, only time will tell, but god I hope he stays.  After we get rid of Coveny, we need to sign some more strikers, fast!  I also doubt we will get Porter....

For quite a while I've been arguing the case that sides with an obvious disadvantage due to isolated location, lifestyle (as compated to other place) etc should be awarded some kind of concessions to entice better players and at the very least bring them into the realms of competitiveness and a chance to make the finals. This need was confirmed by the defection of the Phoenix star man, striker Shane Shmeltz. It's obvious that the east coast of Australia is the most attractive place to live in terms of lifestyle for players in the A-League.

The FFA has to take into consideration various factors and influences and do a study on why players are choosing to play where. It's more than just the fact that they're the furthers points east and west of the teams competing in the league, it's just a fact that these two cities are simply not an attractive place to play for many players. No good players seem to want to go there and I don't think you can continually put that down to mismanagement.

TBH though I don't have all the answers as to why players don't want to play there, I'm sure there are more. Perth tried to sign several players in the off-season that went to other clubs such as Stuart Musialik but were rejected and Wellington are seen as the dregs of the A-League and have been from the outset, I don't see how they are supposed to reverse this stigma without some sort of help.

The defection of Shmeltz to the Gold Coast is an unbelievably crushing blow to the Phoenix franchise, and one that should be countered swiftly before we see them continue to dwindle in the duldrems of the league and attendance ladders, ditto Perth. In certain cases like these it's better to act too early than too late.

You have bought this up before. There is a huge thread on it somewhere. Basically the cost of living and geographical disadvantage arent actualy that huge,i think was the conclusion it came to.

The two disadvantages i see for us in relation to signing players are no possible entry to ACL and no reserve team. The others i don't buy.

Seriously though.  Meh.

All it means is that if we sign an Australian the chances are they want to be here and won't just be here on holiday(rumour suggests some exceptions) and more importantly, if Australians won't come then we have a nation full of players to find the next Sigmund and pretty much every NZ player with genuine ambitions wants to play professional football here.

The one exception is that we desperately need an NZ player to start challenging for the NZFC Golden Boot this season.  We can rule out the likelihood of that in Auckland but maybe we'll see something or someone special appear elsewhere.

I'd say a bit harsh, he can most certainly hit them, he just had a bad vein of form at the start of last season.

No I did not bring it up before but copied a post in the MVFans Forum as mentioned at the start, I missed the orginal thread from Egan ..... it would appear the MV poster copied it from YF and then added a little.

They turned out to be right.
I still want confirmation from tony p.
Or a reliable source.

Tony is out of the country so you may not get a rapid response.

The thing that should be remembered in this is that many football agents are snakes, one name bandied around in this discussion is one of the snakier snakes...

Business is business. Professionalism and the $.
I wouldn't blame him for moving. The Gold Coast, he could do alot worse.
We aren't doing much better than last year, still look rudderless  for the most part, thanks  R.H.

I still dont think that ricki can be blamed.
After all..
He isnt the one out on the pitch screwing up mis-passing and not taking shots on goal.

By that logic no coach can ever be blamed.

I don't think RH should be blamed for most of this year, though. He's made a couple of crap decisions - like Dodd playing midfield - but on the whole he has done alright. I just don't think our squad has clicked yet.

Hypothetical: if Smeltz goes to the Gold Coast would you give him the raspberry when they come to play the Phoenix at the RoF?

Are you kidding? Perth supporters giving Bertos sh*t last night was the highlight of the match.

No matter how good a player is, they will get sh*t if they leave a club where they are revered, especially if that club is the one that is perceived to have made them bigfor example Rio Ferdinand and Alan Smith leaving Leeds. Mind they both went to Manchester United, which only exacerbated the matter further...

Is it just me or has Smeltz looked a whole lot more disinterested since he signed for GC.
