Her Indoors doesn't like Wellington... therefore he's gone.

It's a shame, but hopefully now it's out and resolved he'll start looking like a player again for the rest of the season.

I can see this transfer being similar to van Nistelrooy's move to real (although it wasn't his choice)

Anyway, now lets dump covs and build a new strike unit featuring Costa and other fast players.

Good to know finally.

Wouldnt be easy if your family isnt happy when you come home from long trips away.

Maybe now he can relax a bit and play out the season well.

He made the Phoenix in the first year, I wont ever forget that.

Any talk about benching him is nonsense, play your best team every time.

Look forward to news of the new signings

How f**ked up is the A league you sign for another club yet still play for the old one, does that happen anywhere else not including egg(league)ball

Yes lets keep him around so he can tell all the others the benefits of going to the Gold Coast, Pro teams dont keep there players hanging around after they sign for another
Great times while he was one of us now he's gone, bring on Costa and Drapper might be the revelation we need

Honestly Costa was so sh*te on the weekend - had no impact at all!  I say sign Brockie instead!

+1

Also drop Smeltz to the bench. I think its time to maybe start thinking about next year and brining up another striker to fit the role for next season.

It happens in the A League, pretty sure Durante played in the finals last year when we had his signature

Why would we sit him on the bench just because hes signed for another club?

Hes a legend and our top goalscorer ffs

Allegedly

A sizeable chunk of our cap is tied up in a striker who was the 2nd top goal scorer in the league last year.  To bench him when we are playing like crap is a ridiculous waste of money and a guarantee of a cycle of poorer results and falling crowds.

Ridiculous suggestion that we bench him.

This was obviously something hanging over team morale

No player is bigger than the club.  Rotate him, just like he's rotated us.  Frankly his form has been ordinary for the last month anyway.

if no one else is goin 2 say it. thanx smeltzy 4 the 2 years u gave us? seriously y would he play at a club wer he gets maybe one or two decent oppourtunitys a game>? u guys cant be serious wen u say is work rate has dropped?? hes barely had the ball because no one else in the team seems to giv a sh*t! i dont blame him for leaving one little bit!! maybe jus maybe if the phoenix pick there game up and actually make decent chance 4 a striker to do wat a striker is ment 2 (score goals) he will come back! i for one would welcome him with open arms! any aussie team is a step up from us at the moment for the simple reson that they can play in the asian champs

Thats the part that counts for now, cant live in the past
The only criteria you have that he should start is because he costs a lot of money

I agree. That and that fact that he is getting marked out of the game. People say his work rate has dropped? Hard to quantify that when players aren't giving him the ball and if/when he does get it, he has 3 defenders up his ass.

I don't blame him.  Who would want to be stalked by Smarah for another year?

Well he's gone. Weve got to play him out though, and he's still going to be our number 1 striker for the AW's so lets not start wishing bad things to happen to him, from a national sense we need him!!!

So hopefully some Draper and Costa runs can happen. Mike I totally disagree. I think from watching 75 minutes of sh*te football Costa came on and played with class and balls. He ran at people, he turned people and at one stage held of 3 defenders to get a cross in that was an absolute pearler. After that performance i'd love to see him get a full game ahead of covs, because covs might be the war horse master, the apprentice looks set to take over.

Signing Brockie would be good. We'd have Brockie, Costa, Draper and (when he remembers how to) Kwasnik. Thats a pretty good strike force, we just need the midfield to start to deliver. We should be encouraging more shots!

Thats my rant, HN please don't ban me, i'm only Santalab in disguise...

I understand all the reality about him being a sportsman who has to do the best by his family and for himself. So good luck to him.
But f**k HIM, seriously, f**k him. Ricki took a gamble on a guy playing conference and we made him. f**k HIM

Had to read it five times but, yes, I agree.

The problem is that psychological factor of him continuing to play for a club that everyone knows he has thrown over. I dread the thought of some Phoenix supporters booing him when the team next plays at home.

His performance at perth indicated his mind was totally elsewhere. Hopefully now he can get back to repaying us for giving him a lifeline. We want another six goals!

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

That is a strike force with one striker and three wingers...

Whether or not I'll boo Smeltz come next years "Gold Coast @ Wellington Phoenix" fixture is completely up to Shane. If he shows professionalism and plays every remaining game in the black and yellow with the passion and ability we deserve from our players, then I'll wish him all the best. If he dicks around, going through the motions and just collecting paychecks while dreaming of surfing and schoolies, then I'll boo him more than Hyuk-Su Seo.

Judging by his performances in the last two games, I'm worried the latter is going to be more likely.

Well said Rob and yeah I also worry the latter has become prevalent, sure he has been getting marked heavily but he just hasn't looked interested

Tipping Smeltz to be sh*te for gold coast just like he's been sh*te for 80% of his career until he got to the phoenix.

Breaks my heart.

I can understand his decision from a family perspective, though, and I'd personally rather live anywhere in Australia (anywhere in almost any country actually) than Wellington, so from those two points of view it is a no-brainer.

I just hope he gives his all for the rest of the season.  And just going to point out that subbing him for changing club would hurt us and be childish.

Good to hear that we are looking for new strikers and have been for a few weeks, were already back in the market looking for new strikers thats something that weve been doing for the past few weeks."  although I must say I'm worried that they don't appear to be concerned about next season (unless of course this is a typo), "Serepisos said the Phoenix had already begun scouting to find top-notch players for the 2010/11 season."
