What about God? (Robbie Fowler to the uninitiated!)

He'd be a helluva marquee signing, and Ryan Nelsen could very easily put in a good word, seeing God's playing for Blackburn at present.

Failing that, there's always St. Michael, who'll be on a free from the Barcode Boys in the not too distant future. Oh, that's Michael Owen, BTW!

Cheers,

Is there going to be a statement by a representative of the clubs or Shane speaking about it sometime soon?

He will be a huge loss to the club. This will be Coveny's last year as well. I trust that we are well down the road to recruit at least two top notch strikers for next season. We need the likes of Joel Porter and another at least as good.
According to the article they've got Porter too

I won't believe anything that comes out of the Gold Coast sh*t spouting machine until someone reliable confirms it.

Steady on Hortus....yes we are lots of those things but it is only cold 10 months of the year....Jan and Feb are often warmish!!!!!

Trouble with recruiting a gun striker is that it is so hit and miss....excuse the pun. For every gem there are 10 duds. Look at the A-League...lots of examples. Currently the two import strikers at the Mariners have failed to score!!!

There also lots of examples of players who score by the bucket load with one club and then chase the money and are crap at their new club...Mr Aloisi springs to mind. So be warned Mr Smeltz. Ricki and the Phoenix took you from oblivion playing for some backward shiite hole suburban pub team in the UK. Where would you be today if it had not been for the Phoenix?
We wish you well if you do go to Bling2 but remember that a new coach, new team, new setup does not always mean continuing personel success!!!!!

Harsh words - I have lived in Brisbane,  the Gold Coast and Sydney but would choose Wellington over any of them.  Wellington has that something special that those other cities can not match

I hope Smeltz stays, but in all honesty I'd rather live in almost any Australian city than Wellington (Phoenix aside that is, ofcourse).

Mariners have only got one new striker not two as you said and he has been successful Dylan Mzc, he was been in great form until he got hurt, scored a great goal on Friday night, and has scored 4 goals in 7 games, Matty S if he keeps improving could see him in a Socceroos shirt, Sash still playing well, and Nik if he recovers is the best striker in the league.

Just our crap defence we have to fix up ......

You need to cast your net wide to find his replacement.......... maybe look to Asia ......... but he will be hard to replace.

This is from the MV fans forum and apart from his spelling error ........I wonder if this guy has a point.

For quite a while I've been arguing the case that sides with an obvious disadvantage due to isolated location, lifestyle (as compated to other place) etc should be awarded some kind of concessions to entice better players and at the very least bring them into the realms of competitiveness and a chance to make the finals. This need was confirmed by the defection of the Phoenix star man, striker Shane Shmeltz. It's obvious that the east coast of Australia is the most attractive place to live in terms of lifestyle for players in the A-League.

The FFA has to take into consideration various factors and influences and do a study on why players are choosing to play where. It's more than just the fact that they're the furthers points east and west of the teams competing in the league, it's just a fact that these two cities are simply not an attractive place to play for many players. No good players seem to want to go there and I don't think you can continually put that down to mismanagement.

TBH though I don't have all the answers as to why players don't want to play there, I'm sure there are more. Perth tried to sign several players in the off-season that went to other clubs such as Stuart Musialik but were rejected and Wellington are seen as the dregs of the A-League and have been from the outset, I don't see how they are supposed to reverse this stigma without some sort of help.

The defection of Shmeltz to the Gold Coast is an unbelievably crushing blow to the Phoenix franchise, and one that should be countered swiftly before we see them continue to dwindle in the duldrems of the league and attendance ladders, ditto Perth. In certain cases like these it's better to act too early than too late.

Just wish him or the club would be honest and come out and say if he is going or not. Then maybe he can concentrate on THIS season.Could this be affecting his form as apart from 2 penalties against the planes he hasnt scored from open play in the last 3 games.

Lets just hope the club are actively seeking his replacement and not sitting back waiting.

Fair point.  I know Melbourne Storm get similar concessions.

The AFL has something almost the opposite doesnt it, the Swans get more under the cap because of the cost of living in Sydney so maybe something could work the other way

I'd like to have a definitive answer as to what's happening with Smetlz, although when asked about it on Wednesday's question and answer Tony basically indicated that the Nix want him just nothing has been confirmed yet???? So I'm guessing there isn't an aswer to be given.

See, I was totally despondent yesterday, then I remembered who his agent is and based on what I have heard there is every chance he'd go to the press and claim Smeltzy is signed somewhere to get the offer up from others.

Still think he'll go, just not so certain he already is.

Guys, take a deep breathe and relax! Let's face it, in football, how many times have we read that a player has signed for another club and nothing happened? How many times have we heard players say "I want to stay with this club for the rest of my career!" And how many times have players signed 3 year contracts and been gone the start of the following season? Quite frankly, talk is cheap, its actions that matter. We have seen no action, just talk!!!! Lets face it what is the best way to get your new club into the papers, and free advertising, just say something outrageous!  wether it is true or not, so what!

Remember the fiasco this year when we couldn't find (secure) even one striker worthy of the name!

And if Smeltz goes, we'll need to find two top strikers for next season.

Mission impossible!? If it is, how long will the fans stay around. Okay, Yellow Fever will turn up, but how will the pro game grow in Wellington and this country if we can't offer attractive, winning football.

That means scoring goals. Without at least two serious strikers next season, we ain't got a game. Or a prayer.
