Does Ufuk Talay have complete control over player signings? Because if he does then the longer he’s not signed a contract, the greater chance the off contract players won’t be resigned. At the moment players such as Sail (who has Aus citizenship apparently), Devlin, Davila, Marinovic etc all have only a couple months on their contracts, meaning any team can approach them.

I saw Slater’s rumour that Victory are interested in both Davila and Devlin, having been linked to Talay, and it straight away gave me Rudan flashbacks. I’d find it incredibly annoying if these players weren’t resigned, or at least attempted to. I can live with them going overseas but to a different A League team wouldn’t be it. Does anyone at the Phoenix have a Director of Football role? How much scope would someone like Shaun Gill have to resign players or is it just the manager’s discretion?

Rob Morrison does the contract negotiations IIRC, but hard to get players on board to sign if the coach's future is unknown

In the defence of Welnix they are bleeding cash more than any other A League club at the moment, with no gate takings, and the extra costs of being based in the Gong.

Also seems Shaun Gill is still in Wellington, so that will just add that extra layer of difficulty with trying to lock in resigning players. Though not ideal currently having so many players off contract, the A League also looks like having a very very long off season, if version 2022 goes to a full winter league. So is definitely plenty of time to form a squad for next season.

Sounds like Morrison is currently negotiating with Talay. That understandably is the priority signing for now. From that (staying or leaving) everything else will follow.

Which brings up the question of whether there even will be a Nix next year. The other clubs want us whereas the FFA wanted us gone, but what happens if the money plain runs out? Can you imagine the cashed up clubs being prepared to subsidise us for another year in the Gong - except at the price of a permanent move there?

Talay has to be the priority right now, if not him a new coach! Although I hope he stays and takes the opportunity to build a legacy here. If he does stay I can't see any of the current squad wanting to leave, especially if Taylor gets re-signed like he seems to want.

I'm sort of echoing what Doloras said, but it seems a fruitless exercise hanging our hopes on individuals; either players or coaches.
On the subject of Talay himself, I'm not sold on any coach who sets his centre backs to play right on top of his keeper

It's really not a surprised that there are victory rumours. Agents are there to try get the best price for their clients, so linking you client elsewhere does create pressure to offer a better deal. I guess the upside this year, is there looks to be only one club who will have a new coach in the off season. So this other options look quite limited especially given the state of Victory atm. Though I guess someone might see that as a project to turn it around.

that's not a talay tactic, all the CB's have been used as creative options since well before Talay and he has continued to use them as creators.

It's always unfashionable to use a visa spot on a keeper, but wonder if Marinovic could become a target for WSW. Carl Robinson previously bought him to Vancouver, and seemed to rate him.

Wanderers have a pretty young trio of keepers on their books.

Edit - is there a way to bold some comments in a previous poster's comments, when you Reply? Used to be, but doesn't seem possible now.

With a new TV deal next season and the Nix back home I'm sure the club wont fold and will have enough cash to get another coach once Talay leaves for Victory.
TBH i believe Talay is one of the lowest paid coaches in the A-League and our next coach will more then likely be on similar coin.
Kevin Muscat anyone?

Surely if the Vics are going to hire someone he'd be the one.  Like Rojas, can't cut it in Europe but ticks all of Victory's boxes.

By the way there is NO WAY I'd have that Cod in Wellington.

I think we're getting a bit ahead of ourselves here. There's actually nothing in the article that suggests Uffie is going - only that his contract is up next season and there has been interest. Given his success last season that's to be expected. He could re-sign.

He was also asked directly if he'd talked to Victory and he said no, he was asked if his agent had and he said he had no idea. So, if there's discussions, and there's bound to be at least an inquiry from Victory, then it hasn't progressed enough for Talay's attention.

In all honesty, who in their right mind would want to coach Victory at the moment? Sure they're a bigger, more prestigious club, with trophies and success behind them, and with money to throw around.....

But, if they're performing this poorly over the past couple of seasons it would heavily weigh on my mind that something is not right in the behind the scenes stuff. That much we know already, but the extent of which would probably not become public knowledge. You don't just go from being a dominant team in the league to wooden spoon contenders for a couple of seasons.

Yes, all that. Plus: the possibility of playing in Asia. Plus: no Aussie in their right mind would want to live in the Shaky Isles any longer than they have to.

Nobody expects Talay to stay on forever. I would like him to stay for one more season - feels like a lot of unfinished business.  But if he does not stay, I would like him to say so once it has been decided, and not bullshark the way Rudan did. Everyone copes with ugly but honest truth better than with pretty deceitful lies.

Talay needs to be at a club with ambitions, where money wont be a problem and the club appreciates him.
So people here need to think, Do Wellington really want him around if you look at the season so far the club said no to more money and he only got a injury import replacement mid season. So the Club knows he is leaving if u look outside the big picture.

"everyone lies in that situation?" Speak for yourself, most people would try and get out of the question by saying something like "Let's focus on the game, not me."

There's a difference between trying to talk around something and saying "No"

That's not to say he won't end up there, or leave the Phoenix - if he was keen to stay, and the terms were acceptable, he would have signed.

That's what he always promised, was honesty, especially after the prick that was Rudan. I'd be disappointed he left after this season, after this has been completely out of the club's hands. Ideally I'd like him to stay for at least one if not two, but if he is to leave, front up about it.  I've resigned myself to the fact this is likely though.

Personally I’d like him to stay but the final decision is obviously his. In the grand scheme of things, if you are an ambitious manager, you’d be more keen on the Manchester United job than staying at Brighton.

Ufuk seemed to settle well in Wellington with his family. The only thing that might turn him against signing a contract extension would be investment from Welnix and how they are going to be getting players in the future.

Would love him to stay another 2 years.

Disagree with you here. Players will want to know who their manager is next season so this has a lot of knock on implications. We have a number of players I'd like to see next season that have their deals expiring.
