THE forgotten generation of late-blooming youngsters and mature-age recruits could get their chance to shine in the A-League next season with Football Federation Australia contemplating scrapping the 23-man squad limit for each club.
In what would end the stipulation that has existed since the competition started in 2005, clubs would be free to sign as many players as they liked, so long as they stayed under the salary cap, which will rise by CPI next season from its existing figure of $2,406,000.

The most interesting bit in the article is learning that 85% of the salary cap has to be spent on domestic players. It is not surprising there have been some dud imports when you have $360,000 to pay for 5 imports.

Guy from the PFA said that bit about 85% of the salary cap has to be spent on domestic is incorrect.
It's 85% of the salary must be spent.

Well 1 import can be your international marquee and would be exempt but yeah never knew that. Weird. Increased squad size won't really effect us I wouldn't think unless we get a reserve team. Even then I can't see much changing.

Glad to hear that, seemed a bit strange. Guess Aussie's media is about as bad as ours with fact checking. It's 85% of the salary must be spent.

Two points.
1. Ii don't believe that last point. I've never seen it before and looking at non-marquee imports there is some serious fiddling going on to fit them in that amount. Even here I don't see Warner, Daniel, Greenacre and particularly Ifill fitting under that plus there is SMith.
2, WHy would you increase the Cap? Half the clubs in the league go from one financial train-wreck to the next. WHy not freeze it for a year or two to help people make it more viable.

Cap is only increasing by CPI, so it's not really a pay rise. Doesn't seem that unreasonable to me.

If the salary cap jumped by any large amount all it would mean is that crap players get paid more, really.
