The Auckland Stadium Question
Ed Sheeran alone attracted 100,000 to his two gigs. Foley has instructed Corica to sign him up.
North Harbour Stadium has become a white elephant, rarely used and running at a heavy loss to Auckland ratepayers.
For the 2022/23 financial year, ratepayers subsidised every attendee to an event there to the tune of $35.68.
Hill said sporting organisations and promoters have decided they want to take their events elsewhere and dropping the price for hiring the facility isn’t a solution.
“That’s a model that the franchises are looking for. Getting up above 10,000 is very difficult and it begs the question of whether you’re better to be slightly smaller, with more demand and a better atmosphere. Or do you design it for the largest crowd you might get? And that comes with a higher cost.
As someone else said a few months ago, who knows what the population of Auckland, and specifically the North Shore could be in 10-20 years. Definitely a growth corridor out there Albany way. Could be another 200-500K folk living on the North Shore in 15-20 years time. By then they might have their own professional Super Rugby and/or A League club - and need a stadium to suit. NZ esp Auckland has a history of piss poor long term infrastructure planning.
NZ cricket want to make colin maiden park a test venue
So many options yet they do fudge all about it.

I’d walk laps around Auckland Domain thinking it could make a beautiful Basin like test cricket ground with a bit of earthworks and at least one new grandstand. Still keep the small one where the Asian guy plays his flute.
Views of the Skytower and Museum. No doubt a big NIMBY element in the area would oppose it
Space for that stadium being squeezed even more it seems...

Seems plenty of crowd noise when Vancouver equalise.

Victoria Park gaining ground as a cricket Test venue. See 2day's Herald. Populous, the architects behind the Tank Farm rectangular stadium bid, (plus Spurs stadium) have now also designed Vic Park as an oval, with grandstand up against the flyover and open access everywhere else, linking the two venues as a City sports park destination a la Melbourne.
Can confirm the @NZWarriors have purchased the bar currently known as “Holy Hop” in Kingsland - a stone’s throw from Eden Park

The plan is for this to be the location of a new sports bar that promises to provide the ultimate experience for fans of any and all sports in NZ pic.twitter.com/F6TB8T3I83
Wonder if the Warriors intend to play more games at Eden Park in the future.

Interesting. Seems a little at odds to their usual statements around their fabase being in the south and remaining at Mt Smart because of this.

Or it’s just another way to make money? League’s popular everywhere, especially if they are winning.
Used to be that Mac’s pub, eh.
That was in the long ago of the world.
Shiiite, there’s a long gap between our games. We don’t do a lot of terrestrial TV where you have to wait a week between episodes. I’m badly out of practice. And so worried about this last level and the final boss.

That is a possibility but I would have thought they would have looked closer to home for that.
Problem was at the same time (Sunday arvo) the Warriors (Aussie I think) and Blues (at Eden Park) were both playing. So the bars were playing both those games on their TVs. Not a shark chance they were going to switch to the All Whites. Though I beat all the pakeha adults there - their kids play football of the round ball kind. The Blues were playing literally 500 metre walk away. If you were a Blues fan what were you doing in either of those bars!! My voiced logic on deaf ears.
So yeah the rugby codes still dominate the TV viewership at sports bars it seems. Be interesting if AFC Auckland change that somewhat.

Ohhhh yes. The key to being a football fan in Auckland was knowing which bars that had multiple TVs and Sky subscriptions. Mostly The Fox in the end, and then occasionally a back up if there was a UFC event or something like that. Checking ahead was worthwhile.
My favourite memory of that kind was trying to convince a place with about 4 people in it at 12:45 am to switch from a very under strength Springboks, who were basically a C team, v France in a friendly, to New Zealand v Wales in football. That’s a New Zealand team playing v a match the Springboks clearly didn’t care about. No dice.
That was in the long ago of the world.

Dominion Road. It had been a pool hall. It wasn’t a long lasting rebrand. Watched the penalty shootout there…

If there are a lot of pubs cleaning up showing Warriors games, perhaps it makes sense for you to get a cut! After all a lot of the NRL clubs have big clubhouse complexes yeh? Restaurants, bars, pokies etc etc

As someone else has been saying who knows what the population of the greater North Shore could be in 20 years. Looking back from 2044, it could be very dumb to pull down NHS now (still only 30 years old?), the only sizeable stadium in the area.

Holy crap, given that Colin Maiden Park (on a major train route) has accessibility issues, I don't know what you say about that windswept fortress up in Albania
"“I know people with expertise in cricket and they agree it would make a perfect test venue,” Watson said." - hahahaha, no he doesn't and no they didn't!
But test cricket is a bit unique as a sport. There is no rush to get there for kick off, or the 10.30am first ball delivery. It's a more leisurely arrival knowing you have 6 hours or more play ahead of you to watch, lying on the grass. So if it's a bit further out of town, not the end of the world. Plus you might only go to any test for one or two days, and there might just be one Auckland test a summer. It's sort of oneoff.
Also lots of cricket fans (especially those with kids) like to arrival with the picnic basket & blanket, shade umbrella, kids cricket set etc. That can be a pain in the arse to carry around on the train/bus, so they like the option to drive & park close by. NHS has car parking, but maybe that is the accessibity issue with Colin Maiden a lack of nearby car parks??
