cos the owners are all wellington based, they wanted the team here so here it will stay. It's not the clubs fault they had to be based in Aus, in all reality they owe us nothing, theyve done everything they can to help with the league continuing which was for us (the fans), the very least we can do, given we werent expecting any games in Welly this year is turn out in force to both home games, no matter where they are.
how so? its a unique relationship, without the club we have no team to follow, without us they have no reason to exist. Had they not gone to Aus to play then the most likely out come would be the club would fold, we as fans owe the players and owners a huge amount of gratitude that they put the effort into getting to and staying in Aus to play. They owe us for our continued support for sure, but I dont think either side owes more than the other.
As an Aussie in the same boat as you guys and haven't seen the boys live this year, I say go for the cash grab and play one game in Auckland, one in Welly.
After being bailed out by the NZ Government, you'd think they need all the help they can get. For sure they wouldn't want to do this, but there's that risk of only 5k showing up, so I say money is key for this season. Recoup as money funds as possible. You'll probably get all home games next season and that's what we all hope!
There's no guarantee of a good crowd anywhere. Certainly Auckland has had some weak crowds over the years. But the Eden Park deal is better these days?

Eden Park are desperate for customers these days. A year or two back there were serious discussions about having the Auckland Gaelic football grand finals there. (Men and women. My club was riding high at the time and that was the closest I will ever get to playing a game at Eden Park.)

"After that last match, in December 2014, where the Phoenix only posted a crowd of 11,051, short of the 12,000 they needed to break even, Dome said Eden Park wasn't an attractive place for them to play any more, but last week he told Stuff that had changed under the leadership of chief executive Nick Sautner.
"He's making efforts to make the business model more attractive, which to a certain extent is good. It's good for us in that it became an option again. The offer that was put on the table was certainly much better than it has been in the past. Put it that way."
The games if they happen, will also heavily rely on walk up crowds. Locals in whichever city looking at the weather on the day, and deciding only then if they will go or not.
And Auckland is generally a lower risk of a bitter southerly whipping through in June, than Welly.
But yeah the big picture is, the owners don't deserve any criticism for trying to ike out as much cash as they can from only having 2 true home games. They have been through several challenging shark times keeping this club afloat, and people should be thankful that looking to 2022 they will still have an A League club to support, which will highly likely be based permanently back in the capital.
Playing in AKL is NOT a home game either. That's like asking a team from Liverpool to play a European club in London yet calling it a home game.
Yes the club needs money but is there as much of a Covid sports attraction as people think? Games in Straya say no, likewise the cricket from NZ I've seen.
I think a lot will ride on results going forward, if the boys do well there will be decent crowds, if not, it will only be the diehard footie fans making AKL a bad choice.
Another obstacle will be the fact it will be almost winter unlike the last AKL game in the middle of a good summer.
You do know that Liverpool played a home fixture in Budapest? Not London, not even England.Marto

1 game in Wellington = 3-5k crowds all day long. 1 game in Auckland 25-30k crowds all day long.
If it is raining in Auckland expect a 5k crowd at most. They wont show at the sign of a rain cloud. Been up there and witnessed it. And just readiing through all the last 32 messages, Auckland better show up with 19k plus as they brag, or expect a lot of negative comments. Wellington is where most of the season ticket holders and payers are.

That's only due to Germans not being allowed into the UK due to covid and Hungary being very much on top of Covid injections. Same situation as the Nix in the 'gong currently so not a good example.

Yeah but it also a poor comparison by you to compare the Nix (NZ's only pro club) in any way to Liverpool (based in a country with what nearly 100 pro clubs through the 4 divisions).
Sure it may not be the NZ Phoenix (unlike Warriors and Breakers), but they have taken games to other parts of NZ, since they existed. And will continue to do so. I just don't get why the NZ Football scene, is ever compared to what happens in a big football nation like the UK.
As much as I'd love to have two games at the Cake Tin towards the end of the season - I fully support the club's vision to take one of those to Auckland. After the huge efforts they've gone through (including financially), I really can't fault them to try and maximise revenue opportunities if and when they're allowed back on home soil. Even more, I'll do my best to fly up to Auckland to support them there too, even though my own financial situation is not that rosey!
What distresses me is that there wouldn't be this kind of anger if a game was being taken to Hamilton or Dunedin, let's be honest. It's not a "Wellington first" thing, which would be understandable - it's "Auckland never". Is there a fear that if any games are played in Auckland the Nix will end up living at Eden Park?
Currently as of 16 games in we have 14 players having directly contributed to goals this season, with 10 different goal scorers. Not sure how this compares to the other teams but it seems a pretty healthy spread of goal involvements across the squad.

Classic Aucklanders thinking everything is about them.
Imo, we should never play a home game outside of Wellington. I understand there are commercial realities to address, but in an ideal world everyone else can get to fudge.

In an ideal world, the Welnix owners (passionate Wellingtonians they are) wouldn't be making a $3M plus financial loss this season, or an approx $1M loss all other seasons.
Plus in an ideal world any non ROF home games would be in a summer month like Feb, so removing one barrier stopping Wgtn fans who are involved with local club winter football, making the trek to the Garden of Eden or where ever.

Nope. Check the old Travelling Circus thread for just as much angst about games taken to Christchurch, Hamilton and Dunedin as there was for Auckland games.

Hats off to you sir. I'm going to keep my Air NZ credit until such a time as anything is announced and will be making the trip to either or, from the footballing wilderness of New Plymouth.
I mean, there's still a very distinct possibility that there'll be no games in NZ this season. Maybe we wait for that confirmation first before going full cannibal on the Wellington v Auckland debate?

"Some people here just have a problem with Auckland and Aucklanders."
"WRONG! FUDGIN' AUCKLAND SCUM GETS IT WRONG AGAIN LOL!!!"

I don't think your right. There has been plenty of angst about home away games anywhere.
People wanting the Phoenix to stay in Wellington is simply because they want the team to stay in Wellington, it's got nothing to do with where it's going.
Fun fact. Warriors and Breakers fans don't have this much of a meltdown about their Home Games going elsewhere.
M
fun fact - yeah they do.
Both the Breakers and Warriors are “New Zealand” teams in name though, not Auckland, so should expect more national representation, not that the Phoenix ignore Auckland anyway

Agreed, but I remember when both team were the Auckland Warriors/Breakers and when they clubs went to change the name to NZ there was massive complaints. People have gotten over it now and it makes the odd trip away from auckland easier to justify - thankfully the nix owners have always said they are a wellington franchise and always will have Wellington in the name.
Yet again the Auckland debate. Let's be honest on two counts.
1] Why did the two previous efforts of Auckland clubs in the Australian competition fail? Because the the teams failed to deliver and the fans up there were near invisible with crowds of 1,500 or less. Hat off and respect to those whom made the effort to show, but in a city of so many registered players, why were attendances so very poor. You had your two chances and you blew them.
2] On my trips up there and killing time, I used to listen to the sports talk on the radio and when asked if they were going to the Nix game, I could not believe how many said that it would rely on the weather conditions as to whether they'd go or not. Yes, you have had a couple of games with 19k there, but you also have had games with a lot less. Even two games in one season with crowds nearing 6k.
Now considering Wellingtonians and the surround areas are the ones who mainly buy the season tickets, it really should be them seeing the team in Wellington. Sure the money raised from Season Tickets might not be that much but the public in Wellington are the ones whom put their money in their mouths and bought them. Not for a one or two off but for every game regardless of where the circus was getting taken, they still paid.
Here's the thread after the release of the 2019 draw which included the first match of the 2 year deal with Westpac Stadium and Wellington Council.
There are a number of people seemingly excited to book flights to Wellington and Christchurch.
I will grant you that there is a post from one notorious old-boy poster "Bruce" who only complains about Westpac being a terrible stadium for viewing rectangular sport and his inability to find decent accommodation for an All Blacks game. - he is openly disappointed he would miss the Christchurch game due to work.
There is nothing at all along the lines of why oh why would the club take a game away from the true fans of Penrose.

Club needs money, Auckland have money and people, Despite the past an Auckland base A-League club now would be fine and Wellington wont have to keep leeching of Auckland for one of games as there would be a derby. But then again if there was a derby Wellington wouldn't get money. I'd rather see the club not fold and have the games in Auckland then them to play in Wellington and bleed more money and perhaps have to get bailed out next season.

Yep, and they do a piss poor job of being New Zealand teams. At one point the Bull Dogs had more home games in Wellington than the "New Zealand" Warriors had.
It's ridiculous that any of those teams are called "New Zealand", they're based in Auckland and play the majority of their games in Auckland, they should be called Auckland.
