We may be slightly moving in the right direction, but one league placing per year is not really enough is it?

Personally think we have priorities a little wrong. All very well taking months and months to get EPL teams here but I'd take a few good signings and a much better 2014-15 season as a result over 2 pre season friendlies.

Rob Morrison said Merrick was in negotiations to secure a new striker, a box-to-box midfielder, and "probably another defender". There is no evidence that securing the BPL friendlies has been the sole focus of the club.

So much this. Where is the evidence that the club's whole executive staff has been focused on the friendlies? There is a reason that we have a Football Operations Manager as well as a General Manager and head of Commercial Operations. From the quotes I have seen, it appears that it has been David Dome and the commercial staff taking care of the friendlies while Shaun Gill has been working with Ernie Merrick on recruitment. A group of people is capable of working on more than one thing at a time.

Oh so Gillie is on the case recruiting new talent, for a minute there I was getting worried...

Sauce plz?

Daniel was a Ricki Reject. Does it, in a perverse logic kind of way, make him now 'worthy'? Daniel is a Top Bloke and a NZ citizen and all that, but he might have been away from real action for a bit too long by now, even for my liking, and my standards have been low this season.
He's not really an Ernie type of player and doesn't really play in the positions we are afters. Too slow for his attacking wide position. I would be staggered if Ernie had any interest in him.

Hope he heads off to continental Europe but could easily chase the big money in the Middle East/China.

Asia (China in particular) seems to be the easiest $$ progression path for Aussies right now, European clubs having other options of quality recruitment right now with the economic crisis still in progress esp. in southern EU.  Outstanding young prospects from this neck of woods make it to Europe regardless (viz. Rojas), but a European passport via EU parents origin still helps; which is not the case for Traore.

It's a bit of a worry when the current champions have two visa spots to work with (maybe improve on)

Roar's issue is how much cap they have left. They pretty much only have Berisha's wages to recruit with.

But they will have big savings on operating costs now that they don't have to have a supply of "go batsh!t crazy" pills.

James Brown (midfielder) Joey Gibbs (striker & u21) and Josh Mitchell (central defender) all released from the Jets...

Also, not sure if you heard the news this week but we're playing f*cking West Ham in two months. F*cking West Ham! Whatever fair gripe you might have with the owners, I don't think they can be accused of having a lack of ambition.

I've seen West Ham play - I wouldn't get so excited.

James Brown still had the right attitude and work rate, and if I recall, scored a few last season. I'd say make him an offer.
Knowing our luck, he'll probably go to Melbourne Heart instead.

If it was post GCU Brown, I would take him in a heartbeat but the last two seasons at the Jets have been far from impressive. Would be worth a trial for sure tho.

Anyone that thinks that Paul I will ever play for us again is delusional. With the horrendous injury he incurred, his age he has no chance. It is a great pity but that is unfortunately ( in my opinion) the way it will turn out.

Given our history with injuries, he just needs to stay in Wellington and he will get an injury replacement deal at some point.

I hope is works out for him. The best player to ever play for the Phoenix and is almost up there with Daniel in the nice guy stakes.

Don't see why not on a reduced deal if he doesn't take up an import slot.
Delusional is a bit harsh. Overly hopeful probably better describes it.

I think he was showing some pretty major signs of age even before the injury, it did look like that quickness which helped him beat players had gone or was at least close to going.  I think we/NZF needs to move heaven and earth to keep him involved somehow because he's been the best thing about the Phoenix over the past 5 seasons and he's so good on TV and in the media.

Not harsh at all. You obviously don't understand that not only was the injury very serious, but the age factor will  impede him from being competitive. My opinion is based on personal experience. At that age the body does not heal that well.

Yes leggy, I'm not an idiot.

I'm saying IF he recovers in time, and we have a spot available, I wouldn't mind him being signed on a reduced deal (and I'm assuming he won't take up an import spot). I think the benefit of such a deal would outweigh the risk. Better than signing Hamish Watson again anyway.

The Phoenix will never be the same without Ifill. No matter how tragic I expected a game to be, I'd be hopeful and excited if I knew he was playing.

Agreed. Surely just having him around in a mentoring capacity with potential to be an impact player off the bench is better than losing him to the Conference leagues in England

Why not offer him a pay as you play deal? With a generous bonus for each goal he scores.
