Jeff agree the Phoenix need to score more but it would have to be four a game because the back four cough up goals for fun

As much as I dislike him, Matt Simon is exactly the type of player we need. We have the wingers to supply him with a lot of chances. We have a nippy little striker to partner him. A cock for sure but when in your team, a useful cock.

Much as I cringe, you and JV are probably right on this one.

We are short of a useful cock. The evidence is in our performance this season: nothing short of impotent.

We are by now at risk of getting shafted weekly, and stay rooted at the bottom of the table.

Agreed - he cleaned up his act under Ernie.

For my money, he reverted into an "enforcer" mentality once he took over Siggy's CB slot. He'll be OK.

Obviously we aren't signing Matt Simon so it's moot anyway. As for the argument that we should take a cock if he scores goals, it depends on what sort of cock. Anelka is the sort of cock who could be really toxic for the team - he was one of the key players in that French camp's meltdown at the 2010 WC and IIRC was even fined by the French football association for his part in it. No number of goals is worth a player like that in the team.

I'd take Robbie Keane though.

have you factored in the decrease in the amount of fouls per yellow for this season?  I mean it's easy to say he hasn't cleaned up his act, but I think most people would agree he has.  also Referee's are notorious for carding people like Manny based on previous reputation.

Would you consider him a suitable injury replacement for Rufer? He has not had major injuries, is reasonably experienced and might provide a screening cover for our young fullbacks (or for Riera / Lia if they get suspended / injured).  While not exactly a top-notch performer, he does not need a visa, and is a bit younger than Siggy, Lia or even Riera.

It might sound like scraping the bottom of the proverbial, but unless I am mistaken we need an experienced player as Rufer's replacement. We have some inexperienced (at that level) players on the fringes of the squad that I would not mind to see in action; but having them play against Brisbane (with Roly out, Manny out, and Siggy still out) it might be a bit like lambs to a slaughter.

Ernie saw him and said he wasn't fit enough I believe. Hasn't done much since then to prove an enormous amount of fitness, so I'd say probably not. Though personally at the moment we could do worse and any port in a storm, yeh? But hey- it would be hard to believe he's at the same level he was at during the Mexico playoff games.

you feel he's getting pinged more for shirt pulls or preventing fast breaks now than cheap shots...Even his argument with Brosque you felt he was getting stirred up, but not doing anything silly.

Seeing Matt Simon has been mention as a cock we havent signed but should have - I'd even be happy if we actually made a play for Berisha when he was available. Sure he's an absolute nutsack but man he can score the goals.

I'd love to see Robbie Keane's crap 'goal celebration' at the Caketin as he scores goals in a Nix Shirt!

I assume he's too expensive for the A-League as he has current form,  25 appearances for Galaxy in 2015, scoring 20 goals.

Doyle's cards are from a lack of coordination and generally poor timing. Manny's are from too much perceived aggression. There's a bug difference. You can tone done the aggression but you can't do anything for coordination other than ensure they are super fit so there's no late tackles from that.

Not sure how I feel about this, last two seasons he hasn't been that great. His best season was 2013-14 where he scored 12. So would be hoping again that he finds form and fits with our system.

Used to love watching him tearing around Suncorp like a headless chook (Cunninghamesque if you will) before fading and being dragged with 20-30 minutes left.

Now he's losing his only asset he seems a bit pointless - surely we have a kid who can do similar and probably cost less (KAK?).

I'm in the same boat. I've never rated the guy and he had one season so ordinarily I would just say 'hell no'

But we need goals and what we got ain't working.

This might be an option until the end of this season unless another club badly wants him for more than that
(but nobody wanted Burns either).

I just worry because not every signing is going to be the new Burns. Ernie did well giving Burns a chance and it was a great outcome, but that isn't to say every signing will be the same because Ernie gave them a chance.

However we have no visa spots, we are lacking in a striker and beggars can't be choosers.

Exactly. Williams is a lower risk as he is not a visa player and we do not have to let go of anyone for him.

I agree that his speed is not the same these days as when he played for NQ Fury, but he is still more of a true striker than anyone except Krishna and maybe Powell and Appiah. If he is fit, he is no worse than Krishna, and better than Appiah (I'm not sure how good Powell is).

Williams can do decent free kicks and with our wingers, he should get plenty of chances. e also scores with annoying regularity against us. Including a hattrick.

I would say he is worse than Krishna. Krishna has been involved in 9 goals in 13 games this season (6 goals, 3 assists) and he puts in massive efforts tracking back and pressing opposition players constantly, and chasing the occasional long ball. I think hes been our most consistent player this season. I don't think Williams would contribute close to what Krishna has done.

However, he would be a useful player for squad depth and experience and if he was cheapish I'd take him on a 6 month contract and see how he went.

Edit: just had a look and last year Williams played 1500 mins for MC, scored 3 goals and got no assists. Krishna's played about 1100mins so far this season for us

Yeah I said I'd take him for squad depth. I was just disagreeing with the statement that he is as good as Krishna

I think this thread should just take a hiatus this January transfer window. There is no way we are signing anyone without a license next and it will be a desperate player who will come for a few games

Except the title of the thread has speculation in it and that's all this thread really is. Just speculating on who we could maybe sign, no harm in that.

I quite like Williams and usually enjoy seeing him play. So wouldn't mind signing him up for the season. We can't really expect much better given our situation and the (presumably) slim pickings in terms of local players at this stage of the season.
