And this A Rod into defence thing is totally a tactic barca and spain use with busquets. Site search zonalmarking for some nice diagrams, possibly even a gif. Even the McGlinchy as a forward reeks of barca and Spain's use of false 9. Gareth will be pleased :p

A key part of how Barca play though is having their defensive line pushed extremely high up the pitch so they can press hard on the opposition and win the ball back quickly if they lose it. That  doesn't work if your defensive line is deeper because there's too much space between your forwards and your backs for the midfield to try to cover. If the opposition beat the first line of pressing they have effectively released the pressure. The flip side is Barca are vulnerable to counterattacks into the space behind their defence, so the keeper often acts as a sweeper. Although then he risks getting caught off his line by long shots, like happened in the game against Roma a couple of weeks ago. Because of Barca's high line, the distance that Busquets has to cover between being in a good position for a CB role to being in a good position for a DM role as is required isn't very far and they can transition easily between the two shapes. Pep has also done a similar thing with Lahm at Bayern too.

.

From the Nix perspective, we can't play a high line effectively because Siggy and Dura are too slow, and Moss isn't the sort of Neuer-esque sweeper keeper we require. I'm not saying A Rod dropping into the backline when fullbacks advance can't work for us, but I don't think it'll work the way Barca use it.

A Rod isn't exactly a speed merchant either

My take on the whole third centre back - three at the back thing is that none of Lia/Manny/Rodriguez will ever play as one of the main 2 (unless really desperate) and that's never been Merrick's intention. As Dura mentioned on Phoenix City pod Lia and Rodriguez will be dropping back from midfield to be a temporary CB when we lose possession. The only reason they've played as one of the 'proper' CBs in pre season is to get used to the duties of the role.

My biggest worry, and I know it's been said before, is when either Siggy or Dura go down injured/suspended which is almost inevitable at some point during the season. Who then plays CB? As noted earlier I don't think any of Manny/Lia/Arod are starters at CB. I've seen nothing from Doyle that would suggest he'd be any better, and would prefer him to concentrate on nailing LB. Danaskos? That's a huge if currently, and he hasn't been billed as a CB on any of the official releases. I guess we're relying on a youth spot like DaMairo which would be a big leap in his first season.

Point is, regardless of which of these options they choose, I'm going to be very nervous this season about the health of Siggy/Dura.

Yeah, fair enough. Though seems very much like it the way it has been described.

Just weemac dropping deeper from the central attacking position. I suppose it is another string our bow and could be used depending on the opposition.

I personally would look at using Doyle as a left sided CB. I think he is more CB than WB and has the height for it. He does not need to get forward and he has Durante beside him. The alternative in Manny as a right sided CB and I am not in favour of that because he is rash with his challenges and tends to be flat footed and get beaten.

Yep I have the same concern. My guess is Doyle and Muscat are the two options there. Ok options but not ideal. I feel like Doyle may actually come good there - it's a relatively simple role so given the chance to concentrate on it, not having to worry about going forward, could do a job.

Doesn't help that Siggy is already fighting several niggles.

I agree with that. I was looking forward to seeing Boxall grow into that role and it's a shame he's gone as he was faster than Doyle on his feet IMHO. That boat (Boxall) has sailed now, but no reason not to try to get Doyle moulded into that role.

Just had a look at the summary of ins and outs for all the teams. There is massive turnover in many teams but relatively less
for Nix Victory and Roar. For me squad stability for a "succesful" team seems important. So Nix making finals last year wih similar squad is a good starting point. While losing Burns and 10+ goals and defensive cover in Boxall seems to be detrimental maybe shrewd recruitment to refresh some areas and that some key players are into their 2nd or 3rd seasons (Roly, A rod, weemac and Albert

I'd be surprised if Tam wasn't signed; though Danaskos may be in his way now unless Ernie views Doyle as specialist CB cover.
