Wood would be good.

when people say we need a marquee striker they mean we need a good striker who can bang in goals, left, right, head, and win games...say at least 15 goals a season...I mean we've got good midfielders...just need a striker of equivalent quality...

You mean someone like Burns?

Yeah our current Marquee is top three on the golden boot standings. Sounds like a marquee striker to me.

Burns and another gun up front and we might get a few more goals.

Wee mac is not a striker so should really play in midfield, the middle part of it :)

Don't think we need a 'back up' CB, just a better one than what we have, and a LB.

Just a little shopping list.

And no to other A league clubs rejects. It's not a move forward.

Archie? Nope. It's a move backwards. Find someone better. It should be that hard.

And throw a lazy million on Hutt Rec.

The tin will be the death of football.

Such a white elephant

Hear the boss is in Europe, good luck with the shopping!

Maybe somewhere with worse weather than Wellington.

A striker from Iceland maybe?

Dugandzic showed some promise at the Victory but has done nothing but add to a youtube collection of missed chances for 4 seasons at City. He will be 26 at the start of next season, he isn't this promising kid that you are willing to give some leeway as he develops. He has shown that he is a squad player at best at this level, we should be aiming for much higher than that if we want to build on this season. I would rather we give Joel Stevens a chance than him.

As for people comparing him to Burns? He isn't even in the same ball park of talent.

Yeh, except someone who gives a sharke towards the end of the season and doesn't have crap Pizza promotions about them scoring.

Super-sized Smeltz. Someone who complements Burns. Good in the air, holds the ball up and has a physical presence through the middle...Or someone who can play striker/forward....

Thought that guy Joey or something for WS a while back was going to be decent...but he hasn't resurfaced in the A-league yet I don't think?

Yeh, Burns + another gun striker and we win the league, provided Burns doesn't have too many games off. If you are able to clone Burns, I'm sure that would be handy too. However, someone who gives us tactical versatility would also be good.

Yeah, agreed. His promise is gone; he will be plying the rest of his career in the  state leagues.

We've got Appiah for that potential spot, and also any Kiwi kids. Anyone else should be highly talented and have a good goal per game ratio...

I don't think it's too much to ask for a striker who scores when we want...

I don't think we can rely on Burns to score 15 goals each season given his history. He is a good player but his role in the team is primarily as a winger. We need a proper striker.

Permalink Permalink

His role is to score goals.

We might need an old fashioned centre forward - Burns is great but not in that mould.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

we either get better players to improve our current system or we change the system and bring in different types of players.

What went wrong with this guy? Should be cheap and run him through a Merrick recondition, getting service from Burns, Krishna, Roly, McG, Fenton and Appiah...would just as good a Plan B as many others, wouldn't cost the earth...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joey_Gibbs

or perhaps we want someone more in the

Griffiths/Smeltz/Brosque line of pedigree? Which I guess is why we're chasing Archie.

Anyone we'd want to sign amongst the TEN players released today by Western Sydney?

http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/article/2015/05/15/...

"Western Sydney Wanderers confirmed the departure of 10 players with Australia striker Tomi Juric and veteran goalkeeper Ante Covic the most high-profile among them as coach Tony Popovic looks to rebuild his playing group.

Forwards Kerem Bulut and Nikita Rukavytsya, midfielders Jason Trifiro, Nick Ward and Nick Kalmar, defenders Antony Golec and Adrian Madaschi and Italian import Iacopo La Rocca were the others to end their association with the Wanderers after a disappointing A-League campaign that resulted in a ninth place finish."

Nick Ward, we've never had a player sign for us 3 times. Who was that center forward that played for Birmingham City and came in at near 7' tall. Made a decent enough center forward. Would be nice if we had someone that could out jump the opposition as the crosses come in.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Zigic? He's off contract. Rather have Archie though.

Harry? Scored the winner on the water front. Counts as a local.

juric would be good. I'd like a striker that displayed confidence in their finishing ability, Burns is a great forward and you know he's going to beat the man one on one but his finishing is not on the same level.

Problem with Juric is he's always injured. Other than that he'd be great.

he also fluffed a huge number of chances this season. bulut was lethal

Juric is clearly going to Europe.

Saying we need to sign another striker isn't a black mark through Nathan Burns. I  just think we need another player who can score goals.

Exactly - I know under Ernie we've moved away from using "targetmen" type strikers but still need an out n out goalscorer

That's a bit disingenuous. He played as a false nine, on the left or at the top of a diamond and did well when he and the team were on form.

Maybe not Ward, Trifiro or Covic - I'd look at the rest pretty seriously though
