Name one a-league FB who doesn't get frequently skinned by an attacker. We expect Kosta, Krishna, and others to burn an opposition FB one on one. It happens to all FB's in the league.

So the article about Italiano coming back says that they didn't concede a goal in 5 matches etc etc.

Surely there's a defender there who's worth picking up/trialing? Anyone know anything about the level of where he was playing and who with?

You would certainly think that it wasn't just Italiano that helped keep those clean sheets....there's got to be a decent defender somewhere in there as well as a good GK.

They had 3 guys selected in a WA select team that lost to the Glory 1-0 a few weeks back. Italiano, an ex Glory NYL LB and a Scottish striker. Couple ex A-League guys in the Joondalup squad, McGarry and Amphlett.

Along these same lines. The new left wing Parkhouse who was named player of the year in the NSW league must have come up against RBs every single game. I hope Ernie asked him who was the toughest to get past and there is a lead to explore. Ironically Ernie was looking for a back in the same game that he watched and then signed Parkhouse.

Personally I consider his best performances to have been in Adelaide colours, and that was what, 5-6 years ago? Has not done much for Melbourne City after leaving the Reds.

Even if he would still be a decent player at A-League level, now (at best) he would be a "Jason Hicks On Steroids". And he'd competing for a place on the left side of the pitch where we are OK at the moment.

Well let's just pump Hicks full of the juice then.

I was just thinking of Brock Messenger this morning. Ooh er! As ya do. And then his re-signing with Canterbury came up in the news feed. What about that extra time goal last year. At 21 he would be worth a short term contract.

Was certainly one of Canterbury's best last season. Every time I saw him I was very impressed.

My two boys played alongside Brock at the primary school level and even then he already was head and shoulders above everyone else in that age group. Amazingly he has not had any major injuries so far, touch wood.

well, how did he play there? We want someone who can defend right? We've got no more visa spots, so no harm asking. We seem agreed that Fenton is a bad answer at R B. Would Fox/ARod be a terrible idea?

Nix to loan players to Northern Fury; maybe

Not sure that the Queensland NPL is the best place to send or source players (quite a step down from NSW and Vic state leagues), but given limitations of SS Premiership and Wellington United Weenix, some sort of plan is required.

We can’t keep players past the age of 20 unless we sign them, because the rules for us playing in a national competition in New Zealand are that they have to be under 20.

“So we’ve let some boys go to Victoria and one of them was just part of South Melbourne winning the (Victorian) NPL championship.

who was that player?

Surely can't be claiming credit for Luke Adams?

Edit: never mind, guessing jason Hicks

RB in descending order of bargin and reality.

Fenton & Fox - already there in team and budgeted.

Gulley - has trialled  - did he fail?

Mystery player out of Aussie.

Brock Messenger on a one year deal.

Boxall - ask him to break his contract in S.A. for big bucks. He might have a clause?

Luke Adams, but takes another hudson player away during some Windows.

Channel all oposition attacks down our left wing and give Doyle a pay raise.

No RB - 3 CBs 2 holding mids.

Adams back as a centre back and Dura to right back, with Fox or Adams to partner Rossi?? Luke Adams was impressive IMO for country, though the opposition were not top of the A-league quality

No Tam Dimairo? Is he still around? Similar to Gulley?

playing 3 at the back with wing backs with our squad might not be the craziest thing- but surely that means no false 9? and that's likely to be what Krishna and Kosta want so they can run into space, right?

This would then be plan A: (with Watson Plan B)

           Dura   Rossi  Fox

           Lia/A-Rod  Roly

   Fenton                   Doyle

                Finkler/McG

Kosta                            Krishna/ Parkhouse

Can't see where Ridenton is ever going to get a game in that set up. Maybe as cover for Roly? Or at right back again?

I guess most of us are holding out for number 3 on GK's list and hoping he's super Manny-esque....

In the past we seem to have had the same sort of deal with Oakley Cannons, at least we used to send a few players their way, including some on loan. I wonder if it's just the Phoenix expanding their net / influence - first look at new talent, etc.

NPL plays over winter at the same time as the Central League. After the issues with McGarry etc in the Central league, I wonder if they will be looking to send the young contracted players over to give them game time instead.

Good point but regardless of whether it's the kids or over 20s I wonder what training quality is like - learning from seasoned pros vs QLD NPL kids and semi pros; who is coaching there?

According to the article there are one or two players in the squad so there may be more. But if he's not a starter in the nswpl I can't see us signing him.

Yes I agree with Ryan's comment. We really want the RB of the year from the nswpl. A starter that is very consistent. Playing the last 20 wasn't a big advert by the coach. Then the coach says to Ernie can you save his legs for a non a-league game. Does he want a pro gig or not?

After being dumped twice by Sydney FC, Dubbo born-and-bred defender Jacob Tratt has been thrown an A-League lifeline by Wellington Phoenix.

Tratt, 22, has been signed by Ernie Merrick as a right back option after impressing in Saturday's pre-season trial victory over Central Coast Mariners at Knox Grammar School.
