I think the back half of the pitch is still quite a worry.  Both full backs below A-League standard, Durant creaking, no dominant defensive centre midfielder...

Yeah at the defensive end we've lost Siggy, Manny and Riera and have only added Rossi. And we conceded at least 10 more goals than anyone except the woeful Mariners last season. Relative to the other sides our defense was worse than our attack (8th in goals for, only 2 goals behind 7th)

We conceded over 50 goals in 2/3 seasons

has Gulley been on the team sheet (even on the bench) in any games recently? Didn't Fox play RB ahead of him and Fenton in the weekend?

For mine Fenton either makes it as a RB this year or gets released. He's lost his directness and sharpness that he had moving forward that he had as a teenager and isn't HAL league quality in the front third as a AM.

I feel really sorry for Louis, I think he has been badly misused.  He was such an exciting prospect when he joined and trying to turn him into a right back has failed...

Old conversation ( I know, but what're ya gunna do?), but I think he could have been a decent attacking fullback, but has been let down a bit by his injuries and the overall solidity of the team. If the rest of the team was solid he might have made it. Still might this year...

It's consistency I guess. Both he and Doyle have shown flashes of quality.

I just don't think he has shown decent defensive instincts.  He is fine going forward but he gets caught on the wrong side far too often.  The unjuries have been unfortunate but he does not look like a natural in that position, and actually attacking from that position he has not looked that potent either.  He never manages to get past his man

Agree re: Fenton, on all points.

However I do think Doyle is quality. I feel he is definitely up to this level, and will continue to improve. In my opinion he's got the build, the smarts, the balling ability, and the pace, to be a very good A-League fullback.

Maybe but he has to cut out the mistakes.  He has had some absolute howlers that have elad directly to goals

From what I've seen this league is pretty weak when it comes to fullbacks.

Focus is surely on a new RB, and if we wanted another defender after that, I'd be looking at replacing Dura before Doyle.

Someone needs to put them into a youtube clip.  I'm sure in his first game there was a classic own goal where he just passed it straight into the net

This comment could apply to any of our back 6 last season

He has come a long way, particularly over the course of last season. Has a wicked cross on him too, move over Tony Lochead!

I see that someone above has mentioned Doyle has pace. I have always been concerned that he gets skinned too often and is to slow on the turn.

Is that just me or have others thought the same?

I agree, recall a few times that happening. Although at top speed he is no slouch, I turn his turn is slow.

He can deliver a curling cross though so that's a plus :)

Everton has a 20 year old Welsh u19 Right Back in their reserves, who was born in Perth (WA, Aus). Could always ask them for a loan?

Is it worth it? Our whole issue in defense is a lack of experience and a 20 y.o. fullback with 6 caps couldn't provide that.

Surely there are a few Kiwi kids who have been around the Phoenix environment for a while now and are more realistic options for stepping up?

Only for transfers to clubs in Europe. I don't think it counts for loans anyway (there's a separate loan deadline later IIRC)

The English window has closed but its the country you are transferring into that matters, Australia's closes the 18th October.

So that's why I never got signed by Torquay United. Howlers. They just never said anything. Lots of silence. Looking at feet. But the Phoenix players are above all that. Phew. PS - Tom always looks red and tired - just the way we like him.

I think Doyle will do well this season. Is much better on the ball, calmer etc than when first played in the seniors. Not the quickest but a good engine and really improved moving forward last year. He's fine for the HAL and my preference ahead of Colvey or Wynne for the AWs.

I agree with this.  He may not be setting the world on fire but with our defence in the middle of a generational change he is actually the least of our worries in the backline.

He may not be the most skillful player around (at HAL level). but I see him as progressively developing in the right direction, as opposed to say Fenton who is just as skillful but who is not developing in the right direction, IMHO.

I think Doyle's mean performance is probably a 6.5/10 but his median performance is probably a 5/10 - he is capable of some pretty good stuff on attack and he has had a few games where he was close to MOM mostly because of his crossing but at times he looks amateurish.

Is that sampling only last season or his total Phoenix career?

It's a shame he's not off contract until December because I reckon that on paper Nikko Boxall would be a good squad option at least. He's played all across the back line and at DM for his Finnish club this season. Look how useful Manny's versatility was for us. I only say on paper because I personally haven't seen him play, but he's a professional footballer which is rare enough by kiwi fullback standards

So the article about Italiano coming back says that they didn't concede a goal in 5 matches etc etc.

Surely there's a defender there who's worth picking up/trialing? Anyone know anything about the level of where he was playing and who with?

I reckon Doyle looks like a CB trying to play FB. Much like when Siggy had to fill in there. Gets up and down quite well, but turns like a brick house and gets skinned easily.

Name one a-league FB who doesn't get frequently skinned by an attacker. We expect Kosta, Krishna, and others to burn an opposition FB one on one. It happens to all FB's in the league.

We don't have an RB and Roux is a marginal step from having nothing.

disagree.

Christie, Mulligan, Disco...

sure it'd be nice to have another versatile defender who could cover DM and left and right back and tackled like a demon...or maybe two of those players...

Sure, but most are still better than what we've got.
