Personally I never understood the being away from family argument, they’re young guys and I don’t think many of them have kids, you could argue that all the foreign players in A League and other leagues miss their family as well but all play well? I think it’s to do with his parent club wanting him back
dunnix
Hard not to immediately jump to the worst possible scenarios, but I imagine being away from family and not being in the playing squad wouldn't make life ideal for any young player

Would that not just be simple enough to put in the statement though? Usually if a player has been recalled, it's just that? Seems odd.

Was he on loan? I thought he got released to come to us.
No, he wasn't on loan.

He has barely featured & was played up front in the FFA cup. I wouldn't be surprised if left to take up a deal with another club. Adelaide is losing some midfielders, so he might get more game time somewhere like that.

he negotiated an early release from his contract with Osijek, he was on loan at the Jest.
interesting that he has been released, he was already in Aus last season, so playing in Aus with the nix wouldnt be foreign - but then he wasnt really getting any game time.

I was surprised that he wasn't getting any game time. He looked ok for the Jets.
Also when he did play in FFA cup he was played out of position.
Something odd. Maybe he just didn't click with Uffie. wrong attitude or something. Maybe RR is on to it though, Adelaide have been talking about bringing in an Aussie player after recent departures.

Thanks for coming on down Luka. Unlucky on the playing time.

In saying that, he did seem to be a wee bit down the pecking order, and as mentioned, when played it was out of position.

Sure he'll probably pop up at another A-League side in the near future.

Wonder if that means we're looking at another replacement player? Or even potentially a visa player signing?

He was released to come to us, my guess is he's chasing game time as he's only played a bit part for us this season. Hopefully it's part of a swap with another a league club.

I wonder if we will use our last visa slot. The last two visa signings you'd assume be pretty low cost with Sandoval on loan his parent club would be covering some of the wages and I don't think Wotton would be on that much.

Ange did well at Celtic. Australians flavour of the month in Scotland. Gary Hooper has Celtic connections. Maybe we could loan an under 23 player from Celtic?

If we're talking about who they should be chasing then it's clear, Gabriel Cleur. In wages he'll be a reasonable cost. No visa required. A full back with a good amount of Serie B experience. We won't get a better player for less. There's a good chance that Entella will release him on a free. With Cleur, Piscopo and Pennington, we'll be top of the league 👍.

Sorry but if there was any money left in the club it all went on Wootton, we wont be getting any more visa players that's for sure with the money he is on.
And would Cleur really want to join a team that's (2nd) bottom of the league?.

You seem so sure of how much we're paying him, have you been intercepting private club Faxes again?

nice write up, the more I read/hear about Sandoval the more excited I get about seeing him play. Wootten too seems to bring exactly what we need - a career CB with experience and a level head.

Very nice article.
Talking about the DM role. I just look at the statistics of the matches provided by Wyscout. In his first 2 full matches played, Pennington won the ball in terms of duels and interceptions more than any other player on the pitch (including opponents). Maybe we need a physical player but surely the most important thing is to win the ball from the opposition. And without giving dangerous free kicks away.
We got results in both matches and conceded nothing.

Awaiting the incoming... 🙄

To me in it’s own way is a good pointer on type of quality young players Nix are developing within their own Academy.

Ben Old and others were stopping Prso from getting a lookin. But then a big club like Victory sign him. That’s maybe only part of the story (could be Prso was just unhappy in the Nix setup), but I see it as a good little long term sign.

Unless they qualify for NZ, they will struggle with the FIFA rules for u18's moving.

Yeah, there's a risk that if a Sydney based team wants him he'll decide to stay there as he'll be settled and won't have any attachment to Wellington, potentially would have spent most of a season playing for the Nix and never even gone to their home stadium.

Isn't that just the Nix way? Pick up a great talent, expose them to the league, does well for us, and then goes on to get snapped up by an Aussie club with deeper pockets.

Should be referred to as the Phoenix conundrum...

Hopefully he becomes enamoured by the club culture and the boys get around him and he wants to come back to NZ next season. Here's hoping it's the latter 🤞 (based of the small sample size thus far).

Gotta lock down Piscopo before the Melbourne teams start talking to him. Was mentioned on commentary that he had interest from Belgium and Greece tho.

Lovely news for the kids, and the academy just keeps churning out the youngsters, although I'm not sure what that means for Mogg & Ott. Seemingly just fill in signings to make up the squad for this season?

If Piscopo hasn't extended by now, you'd have to think there would be others in from here and abroad for his services.

However If he was to extend that would be brilliant. Would also be happy to take Sotirio, Payne & Fenton from that list and have Wootton and Gael extended, but  based on their form in the backend of this season. From what I've seen so far, I'm impressed with the pair of them.

I imagine that horse has well & truly bolted. Honestly hard to see him in Wgtn next season. He's as Melbourne as Lygon Street.

Nice news on Van Hattum & Surman though. Go the Naki (and Canterbury).

Re-signing McGarry would be no bad thing. Natural left footer, good experience and a fast, skillful attacking fullback. OK he's perhaps not quite up to scratch in his defensive game yet but half decent LBs are hard to come by.

On current form would love to keep Piscopo but I doubt we'll be able to.

I think we should sign him as well just on the fact he can play further forward making him a really good utility player. But I can see him leaving if he's not getting any game time. Hasn't been in the squad the last few weeks but I'm not sure if that's down to an injury or not?

I reckon Hay will pick Sutton for the AWs, so Mcgarry should get a few starts in March. When yes he maybe playing for his future.

I'm sure the club would have spoken with Reno about extending but I suspect he's going to be one of those "luxury" players that some of the Aussie (and foreign) clubs might be willing to splash a bit more cash on than we can justify

Regarding Piscopo, sadly, I think that there's no chance of him staying. In my view there'll certainly be interest in him from Serie A and probably from the Championship. He is a quality player and always has been. I think that he suffered an injury at about 16 which set him back a long way in Italy. He's made that lost time back now and he's really ready to go again.

The move from Serie C in Italy to the A-League has been very good for him. He needed experience in a league above Serie C level and that is exactly what's offered in Australia.
