First one of the season baby!
Fire up farken and COYN! 🔥

Not much positivity around the place it seems, and kinda fair enough... Makes it harder to know what to expect when we don't even know who's bloody even crossed the ditch!

I'll be happy if we just keep it tight and maybe take them to extra time. Maybe throw in one or two of the academy kids having a bit of a blinder too, I'll take that. Can't read into anything with over two months to go until the season proper kicks off...

I won't get too hung up on the result either way as well because it seems more to us that this is more of a glorified training run, whereas for South Melbourne, well, you could say that this is the biggest match of their season (that'll rile a few up I'm sure 😂).

It's cup football though, so anything and everything is on the table. Guess we'll know more in about 8 or so hours time.

Believe in Chiefy, COYN!!

Chiefy in his airport chat, mentioned he expects it will be a passionate NSL type home crowd, and so a good experience for his younger players. No doubt SM would love the scalp of an ALM side. Especially with rumours next year's new NSD may not happen, so just stuck in the VIC NPL for another season maybe.

They are certainly one of those NPL clubs that fervently believe they should be in the ALM. And to be fair when you look at the crowds for the likes of WU & MAC, they have a point.

Weren’t SM the club that was denied entry to the A-League in favour of WU?

IIRC, they were approached to join the ALM (they same way that Perth Glory was, ie withouting forming a new franchise) and they turned the invitation down.  I may be wrong about the timing of it.  I may even be wrong whether it was SM or Marconi.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

From Wiki. Lost out to first the Heart & then WU.
No mention of their cheeky attempt to get the Nix's licence.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Melbourne_FC
With the combined factors of the demise of the NSL, and poor financial management, South Melbourne fell into voluntary administration and lost most of its squad. With Melbourne being allocated just one licence for an A-League team, which was widely expected to go to a new franchise, and with the club in extreme financial difficulty, South Melbourne chose not to lodge an application to join the new (ALM) competition.

A-League aspirations
Since dropping out of the national competition at the demise of the NSL, the club has held aspirations to return to the top competition for football clubs in Australia. On 14 February 2007, South Melbourne announced their interest in becoming the second Victorian club in the A-League.[58] In June 2008, South Melbourne sent a letter of interest to join the league[59] and lodged an application for the second Melbourne licence as part of the Southern Cross consortium, but on 26 September 2008 the Football Federation Australia announced[60] it was commencing exclusive negotiations with the rival Melbourne Heart bid, which went on to join the competition for the 2010-11 A-League season.

In March 2013, it was revealed that the club was in negotiations to take a stake in the cash-strapped Central Coast Mariners, but talks cooled off when the Mariners ownership structure was consolidated under Mike Charlesworth.[61] In April 2013, the club was revealed to have made several offers to take a 100 per cent stake in Melbourne Heart; however, these offers were rejected.[62] Melbourne Heart management subsequently accepted an offer from Manchester City.

In November 2016, it was reported that South Melbourne intended to submit a bid for an A-League licence, with the club intending to continue playing home games at Lakeside Stadium, if the bid is successful.[63][64] Following this news, the club provisionally appointed Brazil and Real Madrid legend Roberto Carlos as the team's head coach should they be granted an expansion slot.[65]

South Melbourne submitted a bid to join the expanded A-League in September 2018;[66] however, were unsuccessful once again when, in December 2018, new consortium Western Melbourne was selected instead.

Roberto Carlos coaching an a-league side would have been insane.

Going off the IG stories posting about the game tonight, an educated guess that OVH, Nathan Walker & Dylan Gardiner are over there at least. 😅

Well if OVH can get there from France, so hopefully can LK-H, Sutton, Conchie, Sheridan & Hughes.

Stoked to see Walker starting. Possibly a sign that he may indeed be at the forefront for a potential scholarship offering.

He's raw, but he's got bags of potential - good technical player who likes to take on his man. Predominantly plays out on the RW, but can play on the left as well.

The official Olympic teams lists (https://fdp.fifa.org/assetspublic/ce158/pdf/SquadLists-English.pdf) had CONCHIE as Last Name and Name on Shirt, and Fin Ngahina Roa as first names.

Similarly Oskar Takoda van Hattum as someone with two words in their surname had VAN HATTUM as Last Name and Name on Shirt.

I guess we will find out soon enough if its a permanent thing or an admin error in the creation of the graphics.

This time last year LKH was the mystery factor going into our pre season cup tie. And now he's gone on to be internationally capped and one of the more senior members of the starting line up this time around. The magic of the cup, excited to see who makes a crack of their 90 minutes in the spotlight!

Second time we'll be up against former TW, Olympic, and HB United player Mario Barcia, last time he was at Avondale when we beat them 4-1 back in 21/22.

Is this game officially our first set of brothers in the starting XI?

Shiiit, it does look like a 3-4-3!
Well blow me down!

And as I type that, Big bastard Sawyer puts them up 1-0...

Come on OVH, an "experienced" head needs to nail that. Gotta show the youngsters how it's done.

good goal by them. Caught us out big time. Classic one team in season v a team in pre season.
That will give them confidence which is a bit of a worry.

Lovely from GSR.
Disappointing from OVH though... Should at least be hitting the target from there.

That's the sort of thing we've been waiting and waiting for OVH to get out of his system

Should be 2-1 😅
Cutting them to pieces down the flanks. Encouraging signs at least!

That's two fantastic chances!
One from the left, and one from the right.

Come on lads, we've definitely got goals in us.

I was thinking "geez we're getting through some good spaces out wide" but couldn't be certain if it was actually the case of cutting them to pieces down the flanks or the slightly peculiar camera angle making it feel that way.
