The Melling Line was not added. It used to be the main line to the wairarapa. There was plans for a junction near manor park way way back though.
Brilliant love it, Phoenix stadium 10 mins from home. Plenty of street parking, two train stations nearby, lots of pubs on Jackson Street and Petone Working Mans Club right next door on Udy Street. Great!!!
Same for us. Love the idea of a new Football ground. Petone is a good place for food and drinks, all in walking distance.

I can remember going to the Coface Arena to see Mainz play Augsburg a couple of years ago - train from Frankfurt to Mainz, bus from Mainz station to the ground which is in the middle of nowhere (similarities to Petone) - about a 1km walk through greenfields to the ground, past the guys selling knockoff scarves including one with the simple message "F%#@ You Kaiserslautern."
The ground had a club shop, bouncy castles, skills trials for kids, umpah bands playing and stalls selling all sorts of wursts. Interestingly you couldn't use cash in the stadium; all the vendors took ground debit cards that you loaded up with money - it seemed to speed up buying food and beer (and I'm talking nice 500ml plastic cups of beer).
Also had a nice mesh fence area for the away coaches to park, with barbed wire concourse to separate the away fans getting into the ground. Not sure the last is needed for the three Newcastle fans who make the trip across the Tassie

Kids from Kapiti are going to find it harder and more expensive to get to. Some families only travel to games via a direct train line. I don't have a problem with tearing the Hayward's a new asshole once a fortnight, but there will be some people who genuinely cannot make the trip, albeit too far or too expensive.

There aren't a lot of good pubs on the concourse, but there are a handful on Jackson Street with more opening all the time.

To put things in perspective for someone who doesn't know Petone, I live in a suburb just outside the CBD of Auckland. It would take me 25 mins to drive to Siberia (north Harbour stadium). How long would it take from Wellington to Petone?

*Starving bears in the away change rooms.

If Petone is near a station (assuming most people who train can have access to a car, friend's car, etc), then people can drive to their nearest station and train in. Imagine thousands on trains leaving from Wgtn Station for a cheeky 15min ride!

Since Shane Harmon has taken over as CEO of the Stadium, things have certainly been improving in that regard. But you're absolutely right, even if this idea never gets past the planning stage, it's going to keep showing the Stadium that the way their treat their tenants and customers is key to their financial viability.

But you're absolutely right, even if this idea never gets past the planning stage, it's going to keep showing the Stadium that the way their treat their tenants and customers is key to their financial viability.
I think they're only just starting to realise that the stadium itself needs to work to attract fans. In the past they've had the attitude of just putting on an event and expecting people to turn up - that's not good enough any more. People have been overseas and seen stadiums and other events and it doesn't compare well. I know it's not always a fair comparison because of the size of the countries but I look at what you get at a day out at the cricket in the UK and it's just light years away from even a day at the basin. Cricket is always the focus but they accept that their customers, who are used to eating and drinking well day to day, don't want to go to a sports event and eat and drink processed rubbish just because they're at a sports event. So you get actual nice food and drink, and you're able to take a bottle of wine into the ground because people are adults and treated that way (well at Lords at least).
Same with officous stewarding. When you have 8-10k in a 36,000 stadium there's pretty much no reason that any steward needs to speak to any punter other than to tell them to have a nice day.
All things that have driven people away from the stadium and hopefully will be rectified in the new venue!
My biggest worry with building a new stadium is that they will do it on the cheap and we will end up with the same issue as the RoF. 10-15 years down the track it will be rather dated, 48 million doesn't buy you much in terms of facilities.

Ok but a $200mn stadium isn't viable so what's better - the current arrangement which really is compromised by the distance from the pitch and is effectively meaning the club is not financially viable or a rectangular stadium of the correct size which secures the club's future? I'm really excited about this. Think about All Whites vs Island games also - perfect venue. Or other friendly games - far better to sell it out

I get the feeling the plans are a lot more advanced than we (the plebs/punters/public) are being led to believe.
For this to stack up, and for the council to have any hope of getting the $25m approved, this plan has to appeal to more than just Phoenix fans (and owners). They have to engage rugby - both Wellington and Petone (which I hear they have, positively), they also have to use Weltec (as has been mentioned) and if there is anything behind this NRL thing then that can only help too. They also mention "community" facilities and I'd love to learn more about what that means...
The ratepayers of the Hutt will have little appetite for this sort of investment - regardless of how healthy Wallace says the accounts may be as there are plenty other areas in the Hutt that can use some investment too... will be very interesting to see how (and if) they can sell it to your average (non sports-fan) Hutt Valley ratepayer.

Petone has two train stations Ava and petone within walking distance if you come from Upper Hutt or Wellington also plenty of buses from Wellington.
