No it wasn't.

Go look at original plans for Waitangirua and Whitby.  The Whitby lower dam is built to hold a highway.
Well highway link - then look at the empty space opposite the old folks home entrance- if still their today. Plans change.

The Melling Line was not added. It used to be the main line to the wairarapa. There was plans for a junction near manor park way way back though.

Brilliant love it, Phoenix stadium 10 mins from home.  Plenty of street parking, two train stations nearby,  lots of pubs on Jackson Street and Petone Working Mans Club right next door on Udy Street.  Great!!!

Same for us. Love the idea of a new Football ground. Petone is a good place for food and drinks, all in walking distance.

Ok may have missed that but a loop to Porirua Was planned. I was lead to believe it extended from Melling as the line split Cannons Creek and Waitangirua. Manor park seems to far north.

They need to hurry up with this transmission gully bullshit. That would no doubt incorporate a decent flyover form P-Town to the Hutt

I like Petone. Jackson St. is quite nice already, and the new stadium can only invite new and further investment. Win-Win for everybody. The Hutt already provides plenty of Nix fans, and this same location is bound to supply more.

Apparently if the Club don't pick you up in a stretch limo and Welnix members carry you in a sedan chair to your pre-reserved seat it's too much for some Welly types. However do they manage to stand up for a whole ninety minutes? Poor lambs.

Anyone who thinks Petone is hard to get to is basically a spoilt little shit who has no idea about inaccessible. Why, back in my day.... walk through snow and plagues of frogs....couldn't afford shoes so borrowed my Nan's..... (etc etc blah, blah)

I can remember going to the Coface Arena to see Mainz play Augsburg a couple of years ago - train from Frankfurt to Mainz, bus from Mainz station to the ground which is in the middle of nowhere (similarities to Petone) - about a 1km walk through greenfields to the ground, past the guys selling knockoff scarves including one with the simple message "F%#@ You Kaiserslautern."

The ground had a club shop, bouncy castles, skills trials for kids, umpah bands playing and stalls selling all sorts of wursts.  Interestingly you couldn't use cash in the stadium; all the vendors took ground debit cards that you loaded up with money - it seemed to speed up buying food and beer (and I'm talking nice 500ml plastic cups of beer).

Also had a nice mesh fence area for the away coaches to park, with barbed wire concourse to separate the away fans  getting into the ground.  Not sure the last is needed for the three Newcastle fans who make the trip across the Tassie

"Coalface Arena" - must have as the name for our new field of dreams (often shattered, sometimes wet).

Where did you grow up, Nuuk? I'm not going to disagree with you fully, but to label people spoilt little shits is retarded. It is physically harder to get to via public transport, so don't be a dick. Kids from Kapiti are going to find it harder and more expensive to get to. Some families only travel to games via a direct train line. I don't have a problem with tearing the Hayward's a new asshole once a fortnight, but there will be some people who genuinely cannot make the trip, albeit too far or too expensive.

To the Phoenix (and Welnix)

We've been searching
For a pot of gold
Like the kind you find
At the end of the Rainbow

We've been dreaming
Thought it was in vain
Ah but now you're here
Can't believe that you're back again

Now I know we can't lose
As long as you follow
We're gonna win (we're gonna win)
I'm gonna beg, steal, or borrow
As long as you follow

You've been wandering
Gone away too far
But the road was rough
To get back where we are

And the sun went down
It never seemed to rise
Ah but now you're here
With the light shining in your eyes

Now I know we can't lose
As long as you follow
We're gonna win (we're gonna win)
I'm gonna beg, steal, or borrow
Yes I can live today
If you give me tomorrow
As long as you follow

Yeah you've got this all wrong, it's more like:

1. The Petone train station.
2. Outside Liquor King.

4. The beach.
5. Further down the beach.
6. The playground at the beach.
7. The carpark at the beach.

You have such a way with words AJ.

I sympathise with "kids from Kapiti" but can't honestly imagine they total more than about 15 people in a Phoenix crowd. Don't think we should make or break any decisions because of them.

Worst possible location in the area. Has Gareth ever been to Petone? Hutt Park Raceway is begging for a stadium and training facilities and is a miles better location.

I respectfully disagree RR.

Vacant land and easy parking does not (solely) a good location make... and there's bugger all else going for it.

Me too. Miles from train links, miles from any decent pubs and one of the worst places to be in Wellington with either a Southerly or Northerly blowing.

Mate what are you talking about?

It's about as close to Ava Station as Westpac Stadium is to Wellington Stadium.

There aren't a lot of good pubs on the concourse, but there are a handful on Jackson Street with more opening all the time.

This is the best idea the Phoenix have had in years.

+1.  Can I just respectfully say to anyone who is against this go and watch a proper football game at a properly shaped football stadium before you criticise.  It's a whole different experience when you're part of a crowd tight up against the touchline and you can see and hear the action.  If you have to drive to it so be it - this is a game changer

To put things in perspective for someone who doesn't know Petone, I live in a suburb just outside the CBD of Auckland. It would take me 25 mins to drive to Siberia (north Harbour stadium). How long would it take from Wellington to Petone?

Your poor nan.
Bet you she gave up her ration coupons as well so you could have enough sugar for your cocoa.

Both my sets of grandparents shared a large double bed in the single room house that they shared with my parents and I. My dad worked in a toothpaste factory putting the caps on the tubes and we had cabbage soup most nights (without the cabbage).  Pretty hard going until one day when I found a $5 note on the pavement...

Actually I think I read that last bit in a book somewhere.

A Phoenix owned stadium has possibilities like:

* Rail seating in the active support area.

*Security that answers to the club. The club can make sure they understand active support.

*Less restriction on flags, streamers, instruments etc.

*TIFO's

*Eggball tenants can eff off until the HAL season is over so they don't churn up the turf.

*Club colours on every conceivable part of the structure.

*Starving bears in the away change rooms.

*Sell out atmosphere even with smaller crowds.

*Plus loads more.

Lucky bastards.

Option to park and ride a train from the stadium? Or politics mean the stadium would be dicks and charge alot? If Petone is near a station (assuming most people who train can have access to a car, friend's car, etc), then people can drive to their nearest station and train in. Imagine thousands on trains leaving from Wgtn Station for a cheeky 15min ride!

Perhaps this might motivate the stadium to finally accept fans as its customers, and treat them accordingly

Since Shane Harmon has taken over as CEO of the Stadium, things have certainly been improving in that regard. But you're absolutely right, even if this idea never gets past the planning stage, it's going to keep showing the Stadium that the way their treat their tenants and customers is key to their financial viability.

I think they're only just starting to realise that the stadium itself needs to work to attract fans.  In the past they've had the attitude of just putting on an event and expecting people to turn up - that's not good enough any more.  People have been overseas and seen stadiums and other events and it doesn't compare well.  I know it's not always a fair comparison because of the size of the countries but I look at what you get at a day out at the cricket in the UK and it's just light years away from even a day at the basin.  Cricket is always the focus but they accept that their customers, who are used to eating and drinking well day to day, don't want to go to a sports event and eat and drink processed rubbish just because they're at a sports event.  So you get actual nice food and drink, and you're able to take a bottle of wine into the ground because people are adults and treated that way (well at Lords at least).

Same with officous stewarding.  When you have 8-10k in a 36,000 stadium there's pretty much no reason that any steward needs to speak to any punter other than to tell them to have a nice day.

All things that have driven people away from the stadium and hopefully will be rectified in the new venue!

My biggest worry with building a new stadium is that they will do it on the cheap and we will end up with the same issue as the RoF. 10-15 years down the track it will be rather dated, 48 million doesn't buy you much in terms of facilities.

Ok but a $200mn stadium isn't viable so what's better - the current arrangement which really is compromised by the distance from the pitch and is effectively meaning the club is not financially viable or a rectangular stadium of the correct size which secures the club's future?  I'm really excited about this.  Think about All Whites vs Island games also - perfect venue. Or other friendly games - far better to sell it out

I get the feeling the plans are a lot more advanced than we (the plebs/punters/public) are being led to believe.

For this to stack up, and for the council to have any hope of getting the $25m approved, this plan has to appeal to more than just Phoenix fans (and owners). They have to engage rugby - both Wellington and Petone (which I hear they have, positively), they also have to use Weltec (as has been mentioned) and if there is anything behind this NRL thing then that can only help too. They also mention "community" facilities and I'd love to learn more about what that means...

The ratepayers of the Hutt will have little appetite for this sort of investment - regardless of how healthy Wallace says the accounts may be as there are plenty other areas in the Hutt that can use some investment too... will be very interesting to see how (and if) they can sell it to your average (non sports-fan) Hutt Valley ratepayer.

I for one hope they can.

Think you might find Surge the Hutt council is investing in a number of projects at the moment Surge.I heard the whisper they want to get as many finished or started before any super council comes into being as the chances if that were to happen of it going ahead my be some what slighter.

Great idea but im not convinced that 12k is big enough seems to me they have set the bar a little low. Also wish they would spend something on bloody transfers.

It's all very interesting.

Suppose it came in at 15k seats.

Hurricanes would move

Lions would move

Phoenix would move.

NRL team if that goes anywhere, would play there...

So you'd have the westpac with what, an all black test, a couple of playoffs for the Hurricanes and/or Phoenix each year?

The westpac would be out of business. Dead. Gone. End of All Blacks games in Wellington, the stadium falls into disrepair, is knocked down, and replaced with a purpose built rectangular stadium. Awesome!

Play the long game. Well smart welnix.

Great idea, Westpac stadium sucks.

Ive been to pirtek stadium in Paramatta 20k capacity awesome atmosphere its only 20km by train out of Sydney.

Petone has two train stations Ava and petone within walking distance if you come from Upper Hutt or Wellington also plenty of buses from Wellington.
