Found the old story http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/8225955/Phoenix-eye-move-to-smaller-venue

Then a month later this popped up.

"The Wellington Phoenix say they will make a major announcement at 9am this morning.

There has been much speculation in recent weeks about whether the club will remain at the Cake Tin or move to a smaller venue and the team's run of poor results has added extra pressure"

Discussion previously starts here http://www.yellowfever.co.nz/categories/wellington-phoenix-discussion/topics/phoenix-ownership/page/242

Reading that article again some of the language shits me no end.

"beleagured Welnix"..."meagre crowds"...

Hard to believe that's a year ago.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Here's another slightly mischevious point

Should some of the slagging off of John Morrison that's gone on on here and elsewhere be taken back?  He said the Phoenix were looking to leave Westpac.  Turns out it was true!

Wasn't that talking about moving to Newtown Park for the upcoming season? Without any redevelopment.

I expect all the Hutt Valley FCs to be there concerned about what it will do to the local game and reduce their crowds and coverage.

Smithy's joke on the podcast during the interview with Gareth about "how much would the naming rights to the Fever stand cost?" got me thinking. It might not be a coincidence that the announcement of this proposal comes not long after Gareth mentioned the possibility of selling fans a share of the club. As Gareth pointed out at the time there's no point in selling a share of the club to fans when it's not breaking even but this kind of major capital investment is exactly the sort of circumstances in which it would make sense to have something like that happen.

So forget about buying the naming rights, we might be able to buy the whole fucking stand!

It's also very interesting to think about how owning, or part owning, an asset like a stadium completely pushes the value of the club into another league. If Man City's purchase of Heart puts an indicative value of $11m on an A-League club (very roughly, I know) the Phoenix investment in this proposed stadium is at least twice that.

All this talk about Westpac Stadium being too expensive for the Nix is nonsense and Gareth & Co know it.

The fact is that the Nix have the best venue deal in the A League.

They pay a very small fixed hire fee plus event costs which amounts to less than $30k per home match.

They have also pocketed "marketing grants" of over $1m in cash from the WCC and the Stadium Trust since Wellnix took over the A league license.

You may well ask were this money has gone because it is clear that it has not been spent on marketing.

So effectively Wellington City via the WCC Event fund and the Stadium Trust has provided the Wellnix with a FREE stadium.

This is disingenuous at best and deliberately misleading at worst.  If the only cost involved with putting on an event at the stadium was $30k the stadium would be bankrupt.  If you want this debate to be had out in the open then come back with real figures.  You are essentially accusing the Phoenix CEO of lying as he's been on the record time and time again that playing at home loses money with crowds below 9ish - thousand

I was thinking about this also. If the maximum lost revenue to the stadium of losing the Nix was $30k x 10 games per season then that's only $300k which I would respectfully suggest that no-one would really give a fuck about. So chur to you linesman for pointing this out!

Of course, as JD says, it seems highly unlikely that's actually the full picture.

and when they make $3m profit a year, $300k is nothing to them.... (in comparative terms)

The $30K figure is wildly inaccurate.

So the stadium Marketing Manager is making up numbers, or very poorly informed? Neither is a good thing.

The name of Linesman is Steve Thompson, the same Steve Thompson that is marketing manager of Westpac.

Or someone is false representing him and stirring up a lot of shit.... hmmmmm.

We have no reason to believe it isn't him. If we knew someone was impersonating him, then we'd delete the post.

But yeah, somewhat confused at the mixed messages coming out from varying sources, verified or otherwise.

Having said that, I don't believe (as a fan) it's any of my business, and if it was my business and the details of (sensitive) commercial agreements were coming out into the public arena - I'd be more than a little pissed.

But then that could be the outcome some are wanting also lol... who knows!

Why would they be sensitive? There  currently is no  competition vying for the football or rugby hostings and at this stage there isn't likely to be. Also isn't Westpac owned by the rate payers of the greater Wellington area and are therefore entitled to know what is going on  with the stadium finances.

@Dompost 2011 Stadium Trust article

From Oct 2011

Westpac Stadium chief executive David Gray would only say that the repairs would fit within the stadium's existing budget.

A substantial upgrade of the stadium is in the pipeline to meet new international design standards.
Wellington City Council is investigating whether to build a new multimillion-dollar facility in a bid to draw more big-name acts to the capital.

It will consider a partnership involving private-sector funds to help finance a 10,000 seat events arena.

I can think of two All White games and a couple of play off games that had crowds bigger than some of those.
