Silver seats? Gold seats?

You only need one person to hold this up for years. Someone who knows the Resource management and the Environment Court process could tie this up for 4 or 5 years...easily. Tyler Boyd could be as old as Ifill before the first game is played in this stadium.

Smithy..... your concern about the objectors having their say is commendable. However my experiance in these matters is that if you behave in a rational measured way and provide a sensible case as to the benefits of a project then you can expect people to respond in a rational and objective way. Unfortunately it does not work that way. People respond in a more base way. "I don't want that and nothing you can say will change my mind". The fact that they bought a property right next to a sports ground then object to that ground being developed for sport does not in any way seem to them to be irrational.( Same for people who buy a down town apartment and then object to bar noise).

It would be interesting to go to Mondays meeting if only to reinforce your own stereo types. I bet these people are all middle aged or elder, have facial hair(including the women), are public servants, wear sox with their sandels and have personal hygiene issues.

In short - Nimby.

I suspect that's how it will go too. You see it in Auckland with the speedway at Western Springs and the lights at Eden Park and you just have to say to yourself 'You really are a bunch of idiots'. However their right to a voice is valid, even if it is in a different reality.

Not really a true comparison, slightly different in that Petone is a surburban park (with a small grandstand) whereas Eden Park and Western Springs have been developed Stadia for sometime.  Probably a better comparison would be to build a 12000 seat stadium at Waitemata Park.  You would get a similar result as will happen in Petone

I'd like to think the environment court could reach a decision, one way or the other, in a lot less than 4 years. Hagley park for cricket redevelopment went straight to the environment court and went through in less than 3 months despite considering 300 submissions. It would be harder to get because there are houses directly adjacent, but I don't think it is all that much more complex. There is a determined push to speed the application process while still ensuring those who have a concern have the chance to get heard.

But speedway is still at the springs and eden park has its lights, at the end of the day common sense usually wins through. What generally grabs the press is when projects are canned because the applicants lose the desire or suddenly it doesn't stack up financially, rather than some environment court ruling that it can't go ahead. Just remember that an  interested  party is not necessarily an affected party and it may be that most of these people don't even have the grounds to object.

I could see this going ahead with some concessions/extra requirements, such as issues around parking and possibly not allowing/limiting future expansion of the stadium.

Id hazard a guess that the person who wanted to write to the petone mayor doesn't have the grounds to object.

Agree.

That doesn't mean that you're not allowed to find an opinion stupid however. People who oppose things 'just because' are the worst. As soon as you quiz a bandwagon protestor on something they supposedly so passionately object to, they have no answers. I've done this at university before for the lolz. Also did it to some person asking me to sign a petition to keep assets kiwi

"Why are you opposed to the sale of these assets?"

"Because we should keep assets kiwi?"

"What does that mean? Why is it beneficial to not sell the assets?"

"So future generations can enjoy them"

"How would they enjoy them? What benefit would they get from them?"

"Whatever, you don't want to sign, I get it"

"No, I just don't want to blindly sign something when you can't even come up with a meaningful reason as to why you're against it"

"Whatever"

A good example of something not going ahead is the aquarium on the South Coast of Wellington. That proposal to me seemed common sense and I thought it was supported by most Wellingtonians.

Fuck yeah. Some of these posts are a perfect illustration of why protections such as council district plans and the Environment Court need to exist!

We all want this to happen but people who don't want this to happen are within their rights to say so without being abused.

And I guarantee that if this process does start to get a bit testy opponents of the new stadium will selectively use posts from here to illustrate what a bunch of morons football fans are.

Be cool Terminator-x.....We's just having a bit of fun!  Humour(however weak) is often a good outlet for tension. I am sure that plenty of the objectors showery regularly, are not public servants and don't wear sox with their sandals. If anyone selectively uses one of my posts, without my approval, to illustrate what a moron I am then, I will speak to my lawyer!!!!!

However what does bug me is the way some people instantly oppose something without taking the time to look at the proposal. Because at the moment this stadium is just that, a proposal........barely past the idea stage. We have a proposal and some artists projections on what it MAY look like. If people wait to see the full plan, study it, weigh up the pro's and cons, then decide that they don't like it then that is their right under a democracy. In the meantime people, who within a day of the initial press release say "we must stop this" deserve all the shit they get.

Well yes to all of that.  But all the residents will have not even considered that the place they have bought was going to have a stadium close by.  Some won't like the idea at all no matter what the wider benefits to the area will be.

I'd be annoyed if some big public event structure got erected very close to our house. Or Transit NZ decided to stick a major road through my neighbourhood.

That's why the wider economic benefits really do need to be substantial.

The stadium is a great concept and will be a serious option if the funding is sorted.

However not everyone is a football/egg ball 1/egg ball 2 supporter, and the first the residents will have heard about it is via DP or tv.

Understandable for there to be some angst. Hopefully as the business case unfolds, the majority of the residents are comfortable.

Exactly, we were having some fun but as per normal my two harshest critics saw a chance to pounce. Must be nice to be perfect. I guess they can tell you how it feels. However dry humour and some on this site are not compatable.
This is actually a serious topic however, there are a group of people out there that oppose things for the sake of it. Whether the actual locals whom live there and after being made aware of the full facts, support or still oppose this development, remains to be seen.
