Well asked him to go, and got Tim Brown, Daniel  and Siggie and maybe asked someone like Conrad Smith or other prominent rugby 'Nix supporter to weigh in. Or Greenie. Such a trooper and immensely difficult to dislike.

Again comes down to how no or little perceivable effort has been put in to win people over to the event. Or think about how to meet the rugby club's concerns.

Another possibility is the proposed sand based training pitch being shifted to Petone Memorial Park .
…..Yes this does have ramifications far wider than Petone Rec.

...

Hmm...

Its actually an not possible at the moment to built a full size pitch at Petone Memorial Park without digging up the artificial pitch.

Can someone post a picture where the Stadium would be built via Google earth or something.

stolen from the petone rugby site.

So everything south of the red line in the photo will be taken up by stadium.

Here is the current field layout :

Berhampore Golf Course is another one that irks me.

Apparently the Mornington Golf Club are against the idea of having a cycle way pass through there. It wouldn't even reduce the already significant amount of land they get to use - it would just be a pathway so that people could cycle through the golf course instead of having to risk their lives on Adelaide Road.

I wasn't there but I was told one of them said at a meeting about it "and we've already given up part of the course for the kids mountain bike track". You know - that tiny bit of land directly opposite Wakefield Park that wasn't even part of the golf course!!

Some people's sense of entitlement and lack of community spirit is amazing.

I would play a lot more golf if I knew there were cyclists on the course to aim at. Missed opportunity for MGC.

In all seriousness, putting a cycle path through a golf course imposes huge risk and increased insurance payments due to the risk of someone getting hit by a ball, deliberately or otherwise.

Not sure ratepayers would be happy incurring this extra cost to keep some soap dodging hippies happy

Factually inaccurate AND off topic.

ACC negates the insurance argument in this fine country my Australian friend.

So, in all seriousness, there is no additional cost it's just head in the sand selfishness.

But if you want to discuss golf courses and state-funded public insurance start a thread and we can debate it all there.

Damn it, I always forget about ACC!

Dad played golf with members of petone rugby club who were organising against the petone arena today.

They were talking about how they were petitioning and speaking up against it. Dad asked why they were so against it and the reason was basically along the lines of "because we don't want soccer to have any of OUR grounds"

Dad said he couldn't believe the hate. And it seemed their reasons were more about hating on soccer, and an us vs them attitude, rather than any sort of logical reasoning as to why they were against it.

He also mentioned that they were council grounds, not their grounds. Which they didn't much like.

Dad tried to bring up a few other points, but they just weren't interested in any reasonable discussion.

They then concluded the conversation by saying "it's not happening" as if they're the ones who get the final say.

This should not come as a big surprise, especially amongst the older generation.
Football is a threat to rugby. It's simpler, more inclusive and more passionate. It will erode the rugby base over time.

This is why it's such a screw up that it has become the "Phoenix Stadium". If it had have been handled right it would be an multi purpose stadium for football, rugby and whatever else.

Growing up I played rugby. You would know this if you've played football with me. Growing up I was taught to hate football. Then as I got to high school all my friends played football and I played it every lunch time. Eventually I realised it was possible to support both codes. To enjoy more than one form of sport. However there is still very much a stigma based on this us and them approach. My old man still hates on football, but the World Cup run in 2010 changed his perspective and hopefully some smart events might bring them around.

That said this sounds like a giant clusterf*ck not to have taken rugby ego's into consideration. Welnix should have announced this in partnership with the WRFU.

Yes, announced that it would also be the training base for the Hurricanes.

Yep.  That horse was running the day it was launched and the WelNix PR machine didn't bother turning up.

I would imagine the Hutt Council are livid with them so zero chance of any future support for any initiatives in the Hutt.

I don't know, if there is a ground swell of support for it then something might happen. Especially is the 300 submissions figure is correct.

The problem as I see it is that we aren't as organised as the anti development brigade, and also way more considered / less bat shit crazy (for the most part). Therefore we are getting out noised.

Is it possible that welnix deliberately haven't attempted to get rugby onside as they want this to be a proper nix home, with a pitch in tip top condition for every game i.e. not murdered by a S15 game the night before?

The designs (admittedly early ones and lacking in detail) did have the nix badge prominently displayed on the stadium frontage... can't imagine the canes would see their home ground as having that there...

Just a thought, could be waaay wrong but ya never know.

And to add my own anecdote...

Like brumbys I am a passionate supporter of all sports and love my rugby, particularly club rugby (long long time Upper Hutt supporter). I went to Upper Hutt vs Petone at the Rec on Saturday. There was a guy circling the field with a petition that most fans were signing. When he came upon our group it was rather funny. I was with Upper Hutt supporters, most of them not football fans at all, but they do take a healthy dislike to all other rugby clubs so were not keen on signing the petition for that reason alone. So when asked one of our guys interrupted and said loudly "f*ck no I'm bloody looking forward to watching some football here!".

And one further off-topic thing, sorry, but the new pub in petone "Queen of Jackson" is bloody good innit.

Had a drink there (nice craft beer selection - 14 taps rotated regularly) and was thinking how great it would be to go to nix games early on the train, and stop at the pubs along jackson on the way.

Used to be just Speights and the old Estab there, which were both pretty lame, but now with the Sprig and Fern, Empire, this Queen of Jackson and also that Panhead Brewery one where Gusto used to be, there's some blimmin great bars trading there.

They've also still got Speights obviously, as well as Lonestar, Murphys and the Firemans Arms, quite a number when you add them up really (didnt even mention Horse and Hound and that dodgy as bar by A1 roasts).

Definitely a nicer walk than the concourse too, much more sheltered and much more to see and do. Would be such an awesome time if we could get this thing built.

After reading that submissions number I do wonder if the majority of the nimby support are just facebook whingers with no real desire to put real effort in.

I thought the Hurricanes already have a purpose built training facility at the ironically name Rugby League Park? I can't see them moving at all.

WRFU has a problem in that it's contracted to play at Westpac Stadium. So WRFU aren't going to move either, which I think they've already stated publicly.

It seems the Petone Rugby Club prefers to promote itself as the club with a grandstand that threatens to kill all the spectators and having to stand in the glorious Wellington wind and rain. Full credit to them if that's how they attract new members.

Good post. I was lucky enough that my old man played both rugby and football at reasonable levels so was never forced one way or the other. I chose football because I learned a lot about football and the passion often involved with it from my grandfather who played top tier in Holland (Enschedese Boys) while all my mates at a young age played rugby because their parents hated "soccer" - in most of my first football teams I wasn't really mates with any of the other kids. Unfortunately I think there are still a lot of people with the anti football mentality in NZ but I'd like to think times are changing - Sam Messam, brother of Liam, was an 'Olly White' and I know a talented kid on a football scholarship at MAGS who is from a big rugby family in Gisborne.

PS I rate the sig (lose not loose ;) ), you may recognise my avatar...

I've not really come across any real anti football stuff and this is from real die hard rugby fans. I think if you like your sport enough you should be into following any sport.

(apart from golf that weird clapping gives me the shits and any motorsport).

Yeah the only anti-soccer stuff I've seen has been on the internet, but while I know many rugby supporters I don't really watch it, certainly not at grass roots level anyway. Where I grew up nobody played rugby (we still don't have a single rugby field to this date), and the local club was officially the largest junior football club in the country for a while too (any guesses?). My dad and grandad played both rugby and football (predominantly rugby), and softball, but they got me into cricket.

He seems to know a bit about local football, has been posting on the Chatham Cup articles as well. Probably someone who lives 10mins walk from westpac stadium.

I actually thought, whether you agree or don't agree, that he has raised a fair point in walk up crowds. The only reason we've sort of forgotten them is because of their rarity last season.

There were times when a Friday evening match would add a couple of thousand to attendance. Unless you have some sort of mini Dunkirk flotilla complete with a bar you'll miss out on a few p*ssed up workers.

Obviously I still feel the Petone stadium pluses out way the negatives as it doesn't matter where it gets built you are always going to have made it difficult for some people to attend.

Build it in the Hutt - Kapati/Welly folk have more travel time. Build it in Porirua - Hutt/Welly people have more travel time.Build it over the other side of Welly -Hutt/Kapati will have more travel time.

The only plus side of WestPak is the location.

I do wonder though if he, (sportsfannz), has ever attended a match in a huge place like London? Living outside of it if you didn't drive could result in a couple of train trips and a few Tube changes thrown in which makes traveling from Kapati to Petone like a stroll around my garden.
