If the league is set to expand, as edxpected to 10 next year, then 12 then 14. Does htat mean the Phoenix will automatically get a new licence for the next couple of years. I'm sure the licence ends at the close of this season.

I don't think its automatic, Tony P would be the one to give us the actual situation.

Its critical for us to do well this season and continue to get good crowds along to show the aussies and sponsors how important it is to have a Kiwi team in the competition. Best way to do that is get yourself and your mates along to all the home games

We have a three year licence so 1 more after this year but already working on the next phase. No stress.

And it looks like it may be only a 9 team comp next season now from reports, by the sounds of things there will be no North Queensland Thunder...

..Anyone know, Are Gold Coast still going with the name Galaxy??

If the A-league does expand to more than 12 teams, there must be a good case for a second NZ team. Especially if the Phoenix can pull off some top 4 performances.

I hope the planning has started to make it happen.

A second team needn't take anything away from the Phoenix. It would strengthen the game here, and give us one thing we'd all love to see. A local derby or two each season.

Something the Australian clubs get regularly with many sides within a bus/car ride of their opposition.

The T/ville bid has had all sorts of issues from day one, I was there when it went tits up the first time, though I don't doubt it'll happen - they just need to sort out who's going to control it. They do have a huge market and good facilities with a massive jnr base as well... as long as they don't get Smeltzy!!!

It's also gonna be a bitch of a road trip (via Akl/Syd/Bne/Cairns???) unless we get Jetstar operating a WLG - TVL service lol... and climate change - for us in particular... just ask the Wawwiaz...

That's reassuring, good to see that the back office is planning for our future past 2009. I have doubts that we'll get another NZ franchise in the first or second expansion. From what I've read they A-league wants to ideally be a 14 team league, which means an expansion of 6 teams to go. if the go to 12 in the next 2-3 years I doubt another NZ team will be involved, perhaps as the 13th or 14th team. If it was to go ahead it would require a big backer like Terry to keep it afloat, and I'd doubt there'd be much confidence if it went to Akld again.

I doubt we will ever get a 2nd NZ team, I bet the FFA would be more likely to go the way of the likes of the NBL and the V8's and expand into Asia if anything, why you may ask...for the marketing $$$$$$

Most of the large SE Asian markets have their own leagues - the AL would have to go a long, long way for that to be viable (keeping in mind there's already the ACL).

I'm not meaning in Korea, Japan etc, but more like Singapore, Malaysia etc where they can attempt to exploit the market..

Oh, well only time will tell huh.  But I am sure we will never get a 2nd NZ team, unless the league gets up to 16+ teams, which I could not see happening..

According to the newsfeed across the bottom of either Breakfast or Sunrise this morning, it's going to be Gold Coast United

Oh dear...   The Herald can't tell the difference between Aus 2:15 and NZ 2:15... they're going to be in trouble.

(Serves them right to be fair, the Herald coverage of the Phoenix is a disgrace, an occassional NZPA pick up and nothing else).

I was wondering why it was on there and not on the A league site.

Can't wait to see the masses of footy lovers in Melbourne who want to embrace the A-League but hate the Victory and DON'T belong to a particular ethnic group who feel they were snubbed when the original Melbourne franchise was up for grabs, and will get behind the Southern Cross FC team.

I bet there's millions of 'em....

The A-League will expand to 14 teams.......... 10 Hal 5 ........12 Hal 6 ........ 14 by Hal 9.

But the bigger story is in time the B-League. To comply with Asian Football Confredations requirements a P & R program needs to be in place to expand Australian  places in the Asian Champions league spots to 4.

The money in football is there because of the Asian connection. No Asian no Clive Plamer for the GC and the other rich guy backing the the NT. No Asia no federal or state governemnt money, no ten bids for three possible A-league spots, no Austrade warm and fuzzy statements, no cities and governments willing to pour millions into football. Why because of the Asian connections.

This means there are 4 spots up for graps 2 with go to second Sydney & Melbourne teams, 3 & 4 will go to the gong & Canberra.

However the B-League is interesting it needs 8 - 12 teams, this is where NZ could enter maybe two extra teams and by winning get into the A-League . Also as long as Frank Lowy is there you are safe as he gave his word to help NZ football and he will keep it. But you need to prepare for when he is not there so develop football beyond Wellie ......... sorry it already is I know ......... but show to the post Frank Lowy person whoever that is NZ is ready for two or three teams.

IMO the B-League will be planned over the next five years and start the second year after the next media deal due in 2012. So between about 2010 & 2013 the FFA will need to find 8 - 12 teams operating on A-League budgets of today for a 2014 kick off. Its the same system the J-League has.

I don't really think NZ could sustain two B-League teams at current A-League budgets, we don't have the talent pool and we've already proved that Auckland doesn't work. New Zealanders also appear to be very poor at backing a failing team in my experience and if the Phoenix remain in the A-League a lot more attention will be payed to them.

One team, in Christchurch, maybe.

Be very wary about going too far afield. It hasn't worked for basketball with the Singapore team going belly up. The distance is just too far

B-League won't happen because the distances are too great for sh*tty teams to travel, which people won't watch. Who is going to fly from Bendigo to Kalgoorlie to watcha bunch of guys who couldn't make a decent league have a kick about. The TV cameras won't.

The only way you could have more than one A-League division is by setting up regional competitions, i.e NZC and State competitions in Australia. Whether they have promotions is questionable, but at least it would allow for an exciting cup comp with everyone involved.

Big call ......sh*tty teams, more like Horbart, Darwin, Sunshie coast etc. Yes it will happen because Asian wants it and Asia pays the bills. There will be much more money in football by 2014.

P & R somewhere between 2012 & 2014 needing a B-League, Australian Cup (FA cup style) by 2018.

Most experts are tipping the FFA next media to be bigger than the NRL and possibly bigger than the AFL. Add big business and governemnt money because of Asia and funding is not a problem. The problem is getting tho the next five years.

Midfielder is right, there won't be teams in Kalgoolie and place sliek that - who knows Bendigo???

Midfielder has mentioned places but expect these B League teams to come from the likes of Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane that could probably handle more teams and investment in their areas.

While the long auckland experiment wasn't successful, it could still work there with the right people in charge I reckon.

The Sunshine Coast team has done something a few other teams havent been able to do this year and that is beat the QLD Roar.  They walked the QLD state league this year.

Midfielder. We already have a 2 tier league in NZ here for rugby. The 2nd division gets NO coverage at all. And is made up of a bunch f ultimately useless players that no one wants to go and see. Having a 2nd or 3rd NZ team in a B league will not work at all,im sorry.

I like how the world is so easy in your eyes though
