It would be great to get Leo Bertos and Nathan Burns.

But you need to state both buying and letting go, while staying under the salary package.

Me I would take - Bridge, Milligan,  Kaz Patafta,
Let go -  Richard Johnson, Vince Lia, Kristian Rees

But the cap would get me maybe make Bridge the marque & let Elrich go.

Reinaldo won't come here - he's aiming for Australian citizenship with the view to playing for the Socceroos.

OK, I agree with you on Bridge and Milligan: those were the two that caught my eye, however I keep hearing rumours about them going to Europe to seek fame and fortune. Patafta: what's his status? Apparently he's on some loan arrangement from Benfica. Good young player though.

I can't see us letting go Rees considering how much he has helped tighten the defence. And Lia is starting to win me over as a midfielder who may really start to deliver next season.

Elrich surely wont be disposed of, unless he wants to go. On current form few other clubs will be beating a path to his door. Costa would be a true asset.

A few forum rumours have linked Gumprecht with Phoenix. Heard anything Midfielder?

My own personal biases wouldn't mind seeing Dez Giraldi in yellow and black. Because he's from Wollongong (closest city from my hometown) and played in Italy.

Milligan would be a good pick up, even if he had to be the marquee at the expense of Elrich in order to entice him to stay. I'd def. keep Rees, almost certainly keep Felipe, and maybe Lia. Signing Bertos is a priority, which means some midfield spots would have to go.

Also, I'd sign Robb Watson from Kelburn as a reserve keeper....(dreams are free...besides, Cosimo's already signed me for Yellow Fever FC...)

Ah, Wollongong! I remember watching the Wolves come from 3-0 down to win the grand final.

I hope you would keep Felipe, Robb - he's rated very highly in Oz, and I wouldn't want to see him playing against us next year if another A League club snapped him up. Yesterday he main football analyst on SBS TV, Craig Foster, called Felipe "probably the best player in the A League at the moment". Spoiled it a bit by adding, "Well, in the top 2 or 3 anyway".

I started off as a (relatively inactive) Wolves supporter and stopped following when they weren't admitted into the A-League.

It must be getting late - I'd def. keep Felipe, mostly as an impact player though. And on the condition that he gets a new hairstylist

I can't see Burns coming here, though it would be huge sign of our ambition and potential if Terry/Tony/ricki could lure him over

was impressed by Ogenovski on friday   - a back four of Rees, Ogenovski, Dodd, Lochhead would suit me (tho Ree's pace would be a slight question mark)

Santalab - not with that name

Surely Leo Bertos will sign with us..

Why does the Newcastle fans think Mario Jardel is a legend? He was at Bolton Wanderers when i went over to England in 2003 and he was crap!! They ended up selling him because the tried him on the Atkins diet but it didn't work.. evidently

I'd re sign Lia and Felipe.  I'd add Bertos and Coyne from Perth.  Coyne could be our right back missing link.  Otherwise maybe Tarek Elrich at right back... he's quicker than our Elrich!

I like Owls comment, Lia and Felipe are worth keeping, Felipe was great against Queensland and Lia has been consistently improving as the season has gone on and he's currently keeping Brown and Aloisi out of the starting line up.

It probably won't be popular on these forums, but I'd rather have Felipe than Daniel in my starting eleven.

I also thought that Coyne would be a good player to put into right back in a back 4.

The word I'm hearing is that Bertos is dead keen to play for the Phoenix, haven't heard if Ricki wants hiim or not though.

I'm with you regarding keeping Felipe and Vince Lia

(and i think the fans could help felipe to want to re-sign by acknowledging his efforts throughout the Sydney game on Jan 4)

I'd also keep Rees - he's been impressive and has added leadership and quality decision-making at the back

I'd keep at least one of Johnno or Aloisi - for their experience

Elrich - I'm not convinced but I'm happy to leave the call to Ricki and the club's fitness coach

doesn't open many gaps, so i guess all but Felipe and Lia could be released if someone clearly better can be lined up as replacements

Bye Bye Rees, he's very average in my view. Sad to see Brownlie isnt on that list. He's also got to go.

If Elrich wants to stay keep him, he's only going to get better as he returns to full fitness.

Keep Costa/Draper/Spoonley. No point in giving them the experince they are getting by training with the squad. Hopefully they are our future stars.

sigh..., seriously.. why do u want to throw out the man who looks to have gotta our defense going in the last few games??? he is not average, and the only question mark he has is his pace, hes getting on, but hes strong, hes experienced, and he knows what hes doing, he'll tall, and wins the long ball, Do u see him hoofing the ball up field as dodd and old do? silly comment, KEEP REES! ftw

Rees is only 27 so he's actually a fine age for a CB, it's not as if he has any pace to lose!

Out Ross Aloisi (he's been great when he's played, but his backs seems to be causing problems)
       Browlie
       Old
       Elrich

Maybe Plodder and Cov's (playing well, but getting on so might be able to pick up someone a bit better)

In Tarek Elrich to go right back
Leo bertos - plays well under Ricky
Ben Sigmund - another defensive option
Nathan Burns - frontline striker with Smeltz (or maybe Nik Mrdja for a cheaper option)

possibly Simon Colosimo or Jamie Harnwell if there's still room and what positions we are short of cover.

I know you're a  loyal fan nightz, and we'd probably agree on a few things but the thought of your reading out your team makes me

Goals conceded per game pre-Rees: 1.96
Goals conceded per game w/ Rees: 1

Says it all really.

Colosimo has almost certainly signed elsewhere in the A-League (Sydney I think).
Harnwell is an objectionable oik (witness Webster - his team mate - swinging for him last season).

agreed that's crazy

Our defence has looked way more solid since his first game, he gives a 100% and doesn't mind the phyiscal stuff.  His only problem is he lacks a bit of pace when exposed out wide.

Hmm, I'd like to bring Tarek Elrich, Sasa Ognenovski, Leo Bertos and Mark Bridge in - obviously Nathan Burns would be an excellent signing as well, but don't think we have a hope in hell of getting him here.

As for releases - both Johnson and Aloisi have played well when on the field, but having two older guys hog the spots would seem a bit silly. So they're out. Felipe has to stay, and Lia should too. Elrich, although well below par this season, can only get better next year, and if his brother's here too he'll have even more of an incentive. This means that I'd end up releasing Rees - a bit harsh given he's added stability to our backline, but football can be harsh at times. A backline with Ognenovski and Dodd as centre-backs, and Tarek Elrich and Tony Lochead as fullbacks looks pretty impressive to me. And with O'Dor and Old as defensive cover, and Rees as the oldest one of them and the only one coming off contract, I'm afraid I'd have to let Kristian go. Sad to say that, but that would be my plan if I were in any position of power at the Nix...

Interesting to see, after all the problems we've had at full back this season, some people are suggesting they'd like to see us signing Tarek Elrich (a winger/wide midfield player) and playing him at full back

Wouldn't it be better trying to get a specialist full back in, rather than playing someone out of position (again)?

Oh, and I'd keep Lia and Rees as well!

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I think you'll find that most people actually just like to speculate and fantasise about what they would do/who they would sign if in any position to do so.

Doubt many people would be gutted if their wishes don't materialise.

It's the nature of the Football Manager generation.  Everyone thinks they could do the job.

Jag wrote:

Agree entirely... I suspect we may need to use the import spot for the position as there aren't many options domestically here or in Aus.  Seems to be a spot many sides have trouble filling.

Elrich has played at fullback for Newcastle, and did so pretty effectively. I would like to have a fullback on the right who complements Lochead on the other side - i.e. pushes forward well, and provides an overlapping option down the right. We'd certainly be more penetrative with such an option, so that's why I'm looking at Elrich. He's also still very young, so converting him into a full-time fullback could pay dividends further down the line.

I agree, we'll possibly end up with that out of favour Celtic defender and we'll never hear the end of it....

I did like the listing of those off contract in the league, the 'buy-sell', no matter what is said and how often we hear it will be a popular topic as the season draws to an end. The fact that this squad will only get better is heartening and even if we have no exits from the current crop, with the current available import slot we'd still look better for a year together.

El Grapadura, I take your point about Elrich but I wasn't saying that Tarek Elrich hasn't played fullback, or couldn't play there. My point was why would we sign a player who's made a name in one position, only to try and convert him to something else. Vince Lia's played fullback, why don't we try and convert him!

I'd love to hang on to Aloisi for another season, but I just wonder whether his back problems might prove to be the beginning of the end.

I wouldn't touch Reinaldo with a barge pole!!
