Yep, I understand the concern over converting players, but as HN said a few posts above, there's really no available right backs around to easily fill that yawning gap we have (unless Richie Alagich decides not to retire and doesn't re-sign with Adelaide, which seems unlikely at this point). So there's really no easy solution there, I suppose.

By the way, completely agree with the Reinaldo sentiments. As for Aloisi, I've been saying all year that he's been playing really well, but given his age and injury problems, re-signing him would seem a risky option.

Completely agree Jag.

I think the type of defenders we try to bring in will depend on whether Ricki decides he wants to stay with 3 at the back or go back to 4.

With 3 you'll see less of the overlapping runs by the outside backs. But if he plays 4 then he would have to bring in a specialist outside back. I'd still keep Rees as he would slot in well into central defence.

I can't believe people are suggesting they'd like to see Tarek Elrich in this role. After Christie being moved into the role in just the same way (and I'm not making any comparisons between Elrich and Christie) and all the people who bitched and moaned about him, we would just be making the same mistake again.

I think you are missing the point. Tarek Elrich has been good for Newcastle at Right Back.  He has to be one of the quickest players in the league.  He can get up and down the right flank just the way we love Lochead to do on the left.  He provides an attacking and defensive option on the right.  Sure if you want to play 3 at the back then he might not get a game but he's a great option, he's young, he has experience and as others have suggested he might just push our marquee player to achieve more.

rofl at people wanting reinaldo... good god no.. worst finisher in the league ring a bell? in a league of many chances going astray ever game that says something.. the man is useless, i would rather play costa every game than play reinaldo on our team

I would like to see 1 central defender, 1 right back and 1 striker.

If the 'Nix can line up a class player for the marquee slot then try and find space in salary cap for Elrich, I am not that impressed with him yet but I would give him another season to find his feet.

Team could line up something like this (based on recent formation used by Ricky):

              Moss
    Ress   Dodd   New CB
               Ferrante
Elrich   Felipe   Daniel   Lochead 
           Smeltz   New ST

Bench:Paston, New RB (hopefully ok to cover CB and maybe even RM), Lia (covers all midfield options),either Costa (if attacking option preferred, we dont have that much attacking cover especially if Coveny goes, I dont think Brownlie is up to scratch) or Tim Brown (maybe Richard Johnson if he resigns)

I am concerned at Elrich, he has potential, no doubt about it but people seem to forget he aint played footie for 2 years, so he still is not fully fit, a fully fit elrich which should be next season will be a great asset.
 
i did however think he was rubbish on friday and the way he reacted to being subbed was ridiculous.
 
in all a player with HUGE potential and we should NOT get rid of him

theres a player who played through 4-5 games with a hamstring injury and we were all slating him and now hes back to his best....FELIPE!!

The fact that he's back in the side is your proof.  No matter what injury stories came out of the club, he was left out because he refused to sign the new contract.  His injury was about as real a Ljubo's knee problem at Victory.  Once he extended his deal, he got back on the park.
 
As an aside, I think it's interesting the way Vince Lia has sparked up since the chairman(?) said that 3 or 4 players would definately be released at the end of the season...  Perhaps it was just the kick in the arse he needed?

the theory on felipe is interesting, i hope that isnt the way our club works but benjamin hasnt been far off the mark previously, except on his constant plugging for george

In defence we should let go Old and Christie and get Sigmund and Bunce.

In midfield we should get rid of Aloisi and Johnson and get Bertos and someone else (Mulligan?). We have to keep Brown though, he's like a tough-guy mid and every team needs one, and if we lose Aloisi and Johnson he will be the only one left.

In attack, let Coveny go but keep Costa, Brownlie, Smeltz (obviously), and Draper.

In goal we should lose Paston. He is quality and if he's going to be playing for the All Whites we don't want him to rot on the bench. Let another A-league club snap him up.

If we were to lose Coveny and Burns wanted to leave Adelaide then it'd be great to have him.

Why does everyone keep calling Rees old, a veteran and oh so experienced? He's only 27 for gods sake! Paolo Maldini, Costacurta, Cannavaro, , these are bloody experience old veterans for you! And how about Terry Butcher while we're at it!

I want more pace in the midfield. Aloisi is too slow. Whats Tim Browns pace like? I haven't really been watching him too intently :S

Overall, midfield is probably the least of the problems.
 
Does Coveny have another year left in him? I know he's hit some fitness lately and been playing well, but not sure about next year. Step up Costa perhaps.
 
Rees is a good player, and should stay. Slow, but good positionally. We need that. I don't know why there's talk of Bunce though. Ok, after a year selling real estate, you could come back and play NZFC, but A-league???????????????????

Tarek would be a good signing to re-join his brother, however, I wouldn't waste his attacking talent by playing him at RB.

There's an idea - Ahmad Elrich right back, Dodd and Rees, keep Lochhead left midfield, and Tarek Elrich right midfield. If Ahmad is simply not fit enough for the midfield, how will he do at the back?

I like the Old and Christie for Siggy and Che call.  So we swap the only two (albeit part time) right backs we have for another two centre backs.

My only thinking was where else Elrich could be relocated to if he simply can't get fit, and he's clearly a right sided player.
 
The reverse move appears to have worked for Lochhead.

Surely we should assemble a squad with the ability to play both formations?

Getting back to the lists of players of contract, all the mail is that Bertos wants to come home and Ricki wants him and that Mulligan is also in the same camp.
Assuming that is true that would suggest we'll lose a centre midfielder for Mulligan (probably Aloisi) and that Leo probably replaces George (in his place in the squad). The other possibility is that Mulligan replaces Christie, to whom he is very similar, but is on a 2 yr deal or that we lose a CB.

I would sign:

#2) Richie Alagich (retirement expected) - If he doesnt retire, he'd be a fantastic pickup. The guy is great.
#4) Stuart Musialik (has seemingly failed to agree terms) - Would be a great pickup
#19) Mark Bridge (has seemingly failed to agree terms) - Doubt he would come but in the famous words of Del Boy himself: " he who dares, wins"
#4) Simon Colosimo - Word is he's off to Sydney or oversees. I see that as the more likely move but Del Boys quote still applies. Marquee player maybe.
#12) Leo Bertos - Seems a certainty to be signed
#19) Sasa Ognenovski - Doubt he would leave QLD.
#16) Mark Milligan- He'll resign, if not, overseas.
#21) Juninho - Would be a fantastic signing IMO - but then again he's similar to Felipe
#23) Ufuk Talay - He's a great player. Wouldnt come though

The only person from us I would get rid of would be Elrich. Waste of the budget. And maybe O'Dor

Aussie papers saying Bridge is speaking with Sydney but may still stay at Newcastle. Colosimo definitely to Sydney, don't see him as marquee material anyway. Juninho, relly he's been a huge failure on the field, and no chance anyway. If Aligiagich doesn't retire he would never leave. Agree with your calls on the others, so basically Ogenovski is the only player in the league we'd want or be able to get. Therefore, we'd have to go overseas = expensive and hit or miss. SO the squad won't be changing a lot.

This is my view, interested to hear others reasoned assesment of the off season.
