A League Teams Stats Comparison

Not difficult to see why we're struggling when you look at some of these numbers. Our inability to finish, in particular, is really killing us. Given that the team with the most goals wins a game, one of the best statistics to determine who is most likely to win a given game is (theoretically) the difference between shots and shots faced per game. We're currently 4th (with a difference of 6.0) on that list and yet we are 9th on the table!

Our defensive stats are actually quite disheartening, although there hasn't been that much complaining about the defensive performances so far.

For me these stats can be turned to anything you want to hear.

Not sure about anything. Statistics can certainly be up to interpretation/misleading, but how is that any different to what you believe to see with your own eyes when watching a game? Statistics are just another tool to analyse a game.

I think Fenton and Caira would disagree if they were to read the forums lol. Having said that, I think there's definitely been more complaining about our attack as a whole compared with our defence.

Shot accuracy has to be taken into account with the amount of shots. 5 shots per game with 80% accuracy is the same as 10 shots per game with 40% accuracy - 4 shots on target per game.

Those defensive stats are a worry - possibly a little bit more than our ability to put away our chances.

The average of all our rankings across those categories is 6.8.

I think if we were at 6.8th on the table after the teams we have played + travel I'd be pretty happy. It also suggests we are playing better than our position on the ladder would suggest.

Stats are neat.

That seems to be correct, as borne out by the stats.
The overall assessment on this forum has also a natural emotional component to it, depending on one's emotional "half-glass-full" vs "half-glass-empty" approach to life in general, and our home team in particular. The former say that the team is going through growing pains this season, the latter say that this is worse to watch than last year. If you look through the posts, you can see these two viewpoints, and a degree of mild general bellyache in between.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Not these ones:
P 10, W 0, D 4, L 6, F 9, A 16, Pts 4
Here's some frustrating ones:
  • All bar one of our losses have only been by one goal and the 4-2 loss to Perth had a last minute goal.
  • Only one of those losses (vs the Tards) were we totally dominated (and in only the first half).
  • Last two games (losses) were ours for the taking. The game before that (4-2 to Perth) we were 2-1 up and then threw it away.

I wasn't expecting amazing results for the first part of this season, but  I wasn't expecting this sort of consistent naff finishing.

the numbers imply state what we all clearly realise - the new way we are playing looks good, works in that we are dominating teams in large patches and we are creating chances other than aimless crosses into the box. The biggest issue we right now iss we are not convertiong those chances, plus we are conceeding soft goals when we switch off.
