I think so. Everything feels like it is driven by gentrification and profit,

Give me a wet murky uncovered terrace any day.

I think it's called progress. Like you can now watch live sport drinking a tasty craft beer, rather than Lion Red.

My favourite Lanc Park memory, is NZ Universities v British Lions 1977, and a torrent of urine flowing past my 5 yr old self plus padre.

Was all a bit bewildering. A big turnout of Canty/Lincoln scarfies on the terraces.

The urine was often directed down a piece of garden hose hidden inside a man's trouser leg and long enough to reach the ground.

Popular at old rugby grounds like Carisbrooke, when men didn't want to give up their vantage point and use the ground loos when they needed a comfort stop.

Ah, the good old days. ;)

Thought I've have a quick go at mocking up an alternative stadium. This is the stadium I used, home to Amiens SC in the French top flight; 12k capacity and easily upgradeable to 20k, could probably manage a roof too. Everything is to scale I believe, I just used the Reading cinema carpark for reference. Little white building is Huia pool so still a fair size inside, could fit a club shop and turnstiles, maybe even a gym for the players? Now if only we had some money to actually build something, maybe now that Gareth has dissolved TOP he's got a bit of extra cash floating around.

With an estimated cost of $300m, the outside of the stadium will also be just as attractive. Gigantic LED screens are planned to be installed on the outside of the stadium walls, so that fans outside can feel the atmosphere as well. #RRB still 6 months away from trying to burn it down

So Wgtn at 15000 seat would only be approx $150m  Can we get a Give A Lot Campaign going for this season?

I'd give my left nut to see this happen.

But seriously, we don't need the LED screens if we got granted permission. Just give us a rectangular stadium!

A smaller version of the above please. 12,000 seater or dare I suggest 10,000 seater but terracing at both ends.

Interesting article.

This is the ongoing saga of the NZ Rugby moaning about lack of ratepayer support for a playing ground for a commercial sport that would then charge us to come and watch it.

Hutt Rec if not Petone Rec. 6k seats (Covered) and 6k standing/Terracing = 3k on each of the sides of the ground, make it available for egg ball and everyone is happy

This is the ongoing saga of the NZR moaning about lack of ratepayer support for a playing ground for a commercial sport that would then charge us to come and watch.

It's the Crusaders/CRFU from Tew down to Kieran Read, who have been pushing a new covered stadium, not the NZR so much.

The NZR have just been paying clever politics by withdrawing ABs test matches from Christchurch, stating the Addington scaffolding park is inadequate.

Rugby will be by far the chief tenant, but new proposed stadium will be a full entertainment precinct, holding concerts and other events.

Many of the same issues were brought up, when agruing about turning Hagley into an international cricket venue. To me Hagley's been an unqualified success.

If Westpac Stadium was ever munted by a big quake, the Nix would be joining the queue of sports teams, pushing for a new Welly stadium, and for the WCC to pay for it.

I wonder if the Nix would consider converting Maidstone Park? I wouldn't complain. Since that crappy stand was built in the 60's, The Egg ball brigade haven't invested one cent in expanding and developing the ground.

Why would they expand it?

The changing rooms and area underneath was completely re-furbished in 2004. The front viewing area had bi-folding windows put in through the length of the building in 2005. The entire roof was replaced in approx 2008. The field has had extensive work done in the years 2005-2010 to level it, and improve drainage. They upgraded the gym next door with an artificial surface for training in approx 2005 as well.

That was all after they recovered from years of poor financial management, got themselves out of debt, and then actually starting doing positive things. The club has actually been pretty well run since about 2000 onwards.

Yes it does, and the latest name calling up that way is quite funny. The locals are calling it The Basin, The Bath, The Sink, and various other humour.

Just think some years back a certain egotistical politician wanted to name it after himself and when the idea was scotched, amazingly the Government weren't "able to assist" financially. Eh? The Sir trevor Mallard Stadium. pmsl

I am not in favour of investing one cent of public money in the Underwater Fishbowl stadium - that said, if private money can get it built in exchange for turning the concrete monstrosity of Eden Park into apartments, I won't object.

Same thing with the proposed ChCh Stadium to replace the Lancaster Park buggered in the 2011 quake.

I have no issue with commercial money being poured into an arena for a commercial sport.  Let's leave the council money for all the popular sports, high on participation but low on paying users (say like Porritt Park for hockey, or better facilities for the netball courts in Hagley Park).

What I do oppose is a privileged, cocooned commercial sport demanding special treatment and our public money for a product which, no matter how good or interesting, is not free to watch.

After yesterdays game I got thinking - dangerous, I know. Because the stadium food and beverage prices are now at new record highs and I note the Car Parking for non ST members has risen to $35, I thought I'd like to give some great publicity to an organisation whom on one hand wants their facility used, yet on the other hand not only charges the Phoenix club a ripoff amount to rent and then sticks it to the paying customers. So i did a google search and these are the people responsible for the decision making. Please step forth and own your problem creations.

Please note it is registered as a charitble trust. I might be wrong on this point but are they not meant to run at a profit but a break even scenario? Oh and the Wellington City council with all those vote greedy types should also be holding their hands up too by not cutting any slack.

PEOPLE

The Wellington City Council and Wellington Regional Council established the Wellington Regional Stadium Trust (WRST) under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957, to be responsible for the planning, development, construction, ownership, operation and maintenance of the Stadium as a multi-purpose sporting and cultural venue. The Trust is also registered as a charity with the Charities Commission (#CC10754).

The Trust reports back to both Councils and holds an Annual General meeting which is open to the public (usually in October of each year).

The Trust has a Board of Trustees appointed by the two Councils. The current Trustees are:

  • John Shewan (Chair)
  • Tracey Bridges
  • Steven Fyfe
  • Simon Marsh
  • Mark McGuinness
  • Rachel Taulelei
  • Dame Therese Walsh
  • David Ogden

Staff of the Wellington Regional Stadium Trust include the following:

  • Chief Executive Officer - Shane Harmon
  • Chief Operating Officer - Linda Rieper
  • Facilities Manager - David Royer
  • Finance Manager - Katherine Andersen
  • Sales & Marketing Manager - Clare Elcome
  • Operations Manager - Mathew Hellyer

I just sent this to them via their "contact" link at the very bottom of the page.....

Why are you ripping fans off so much? $5 for a 400mil coke when it used to be $4 for a 600mil, Chips a ripoff, Car Parking gone up to $35. Are you actively trying to drive people away? You are succeeding. Job well done. Get real. parking ar QBE & Forsyth are both $10 and thats for general public, not Season Ticket holders. Great when the trains are not running - NOT!

Any response is better than no response and besides the points might get their attention. Still, I guess sitting down, shutting up and acceptance will get the prices down again. Please offer what and how you would say something to the Trust that would get some attention and perhaps some positive action.

You've started of very aggressively which will either lead to them ignoring you or being on the defensive straight away.

Then you've only asked two questions of them - the first "Why are you ripping fans off" is subjective and no business is readily going to admit that they are ripping people off. The second you claim that they are driving crowds away - they have an easy response that 9154 turned up at the Phoenix which is higher than most games last year. The comments about Coke, Chips and parking are just that comments so can easily be ignored as you haven't asked a specific question about them.

Maybe being a bit more diplomatic and asking them to explain how coke has gone up 25% while the size of the bottle has gone down 33%? Likewise how do they justify the increase to $35 for Parking when similar stadiums in NZ charge only $10? Also you stated that Chips are a rip off, but thats it. Rip off compared to what? I think the price of chips is similar to what you'd expect to pay in a bar in town - what the quality is like I don't know cause I don't buy them

The stadium isn't perfect but they have done things over the last couple of seasons that have been requested by fans ie more food options, decent beer. Parking cost is ridiculous no way should it be the same as a walk up ticket price  and it does smell off cashing in now that WCC have started charging for parking at the weekends.

you are right, I didn't mince words but then I didn't expect to get such wonderful surprises from them. there was no advertising or mention of price hikes as far as I am aware of. A case of put up and shut up. I won't shut up when pushed. I believe in not being fleeced. I don't mind a fair profit buyt there is a level of acceptance and frankly these prices might be great for single people but if you are bring kids and partners along, It would be cheaper to watch on Sky. Even if you don't get the real fan atmosphere at home.

I appreciate your critique and I acknowledge you are quite right. You too Napier!.

whilst the stadium has reacted to fans complaints and demands of better, they have clearly changed caterer from Spotless to Delaware North who by all accounts were largely unprepared for anything near the 9000 fans that showed up. Massive queues pre-halftime, nothing cooked, nothing ready and sold out of the basics before half -time! The pricing has changed and there was some value items, kids chicken and chips for $5 is less than maccas (admittedly it is only 3 nuggets and chips). The fish and chips has gone up, for basically the same thing. The cost of a soft drink is $5, for 400 mls. I think they need to remember that they are not competing with bars or restaurants in town, they have a captive audience for almost 2 hours. The fact that the council is charging for parking now is no deterrent, its $5 till 6pm and after that free.

Two things will annoy fans and over time detract from their trip to the game - 1) losing! or playing badly (but mainly losing constantly) 2)overpriced food and drinks.
