Another point to consider is the acoustics.
The RoFs shape, and particularly the undercover roofed areas tend to hold the crowd noise and focus it out to the field.
You know the positive effect that has had on the boys out there ..(up till last week,at least)
When you listen to the recent 5-7 thousand of us in full flight on the TV replays it sounds quite impressive,with larger crowds even better still..... way more so than similar or some larger crowds for other A-league teams in rectangular stadiums, particularly those without a roof.

I stopped reading as soon as he said he wasn't even there. How can he convince anyone it's worthy of being televised if he doesn't show up either! 

yeah his credatility went through the floor when he says he chose to go to his own sponsors event. He is on the right track though in saying more focus needs to be placed on making the ASB games accessable to everyone, not just by getting to the stadium but on telly as well.

I also feel that at this point, I'd rather have a professional football team in the country before we worry about a stadium anywhere.

While this is a relatively pointless discussion, some useful context / background ...

The fact is that a new stadium was never going to happen (ie get sponsors backing, financing, members ticket sales, what have you) without it having the ability to hold one day cricket matches. At the time it was originally proposed one day cricket was a biggie and the basin just could not cater for the demand. Similarly, the Hurricanes sold out most games in the first couple of seasons and likewise Wgtn provincial rugby team (aka Lions) got some pretty good capacity-ish gates. Ironically (thanks Alanis), in the early days of the stadium, one day cricket was beset by bad weather (and some related pitch problems) and it never caught on as a legitimate cricket venue (one-day cricket's popularity waned as well). But going back to the original point, we would never have got it built without the cricket capability. An economic truth (which I had personal experience with).

So, we've got what we've got. We're lucky to have what we have.

Even though I for one would love to have an enclosed rectangular football stadium (a la AAMI stadium), that is a wee way away. If ever.

Jesus. Think how much of a disaster wellington sport would be in if they had built the new stadium next to Aotea College in Porirua- it would have been north harbour all over again......

What about McAlister park? Put the pitch running along side the massive hill. Bring in temporary lighting and get the crowd to sit on the hill.

The amount of money made would greatly outweigh the cost of setting it up.

Cameras can go on the hill too.

Put temporary fencing around the area with black weed mat so people can't sneak a look.

It's not viable in a geographically small city of only 400kish people. People just won't buy into it.

Compared to some grounds in the UK,( time has certainly not improved Abbey Stadium that's for sure), the Ring of Fire is a palace.

I've said it a hundred times but I'll say it again, the Stadium should never have been made to accomodate cricket.

Should be a piece of piss to sort Westpac out though. Just dig the existing playing area down a couple of metres and then continue the seats down until they butt up hard against the sides of our now rectangular pitch. Would probably add about 5-6k to the capacity too. F**king easy. Don't know why everybody keeps moaning about it.

Think you'd need to jack up the rest of the stadium a few meters to manage this change, might be slightly tricky, lowering the ground might cause some interesting water table issues...

f**k knows why they ever built the double letter rows uncovered though- what was the point of that in Wellington*

* i have sat in Z in a horizontal rainstorm at a Lions game in the last year, and got wet, mind, so the idea of 'covered' is up for debate.
