Far out, the Nix got more coverage here in Adelaide. My partner heard we won when filling up at a petrol station, as the radio station inside mentioned our game and us climbing back to 1st on the ladder.
think the team said the cost of getting to regional cities is too high. The Phoenix need to pay the additional cost to the league and logistically their are often not enough planes.
I always thought we should take the games around Christmas and New Years, when Wellington has been traditionally quiet, to holiday hotspots. Parents are often struggling to find things to entertain the kids and people have time on their hands.
It's a shame Tauranga doesn't have a decent stadium, but games in places like Napier, New Plymouth, Nelson, Rotorua, etc. Could do quite well in the right circumstances but I think the Nix would want the local council to underwrite it.
Yeah Tauranga will never have a decent stadium. Any slight raise in the council rates and all the boomers will be protesting. Nothing gets home owners more uptight in Tauranga than council spending money on anything other than the absolute bare essentials
Yeah it was like the 6th or 7th story. Though they did mention the Phoenix women which Newshub neglected. But yeah disappointing that the mens result was way down the order.
Baypark stadium still exists. It's not great but it's still a better stadium than it's made out to be (a lot nicer than palmerston north) It could still be used for Rugby/Football but the BOP rugby union have basically tried to force TGA council into building them a stadium by choosing to leave and play at a suburban park which obviously hasn't worked.

I agree that Baypark still exists and it is somewhat better than the ring of dirt even though they're both a speedway/rugby ground.
This kind of adds to my point though right? I mean Palmy has a population of 80k? Tauranga has a population above 130k. Now, compare Tauranga to other similar sized cities you have Dunedin which has a fantastic stadium and Hamilton which has one of my favourite rugby stadiums. It is pretty grim when you look at those by comparison.
I'd go a step further than that though and say that Wellington is clearly missing out. When compared to those two cities which are half Wellington's size they both have much better and more fit for purpose stadiums.
I've always believed that purpose built stadiums are the answer going forward. When compromising and trying to make a stadium work for all sports it ends up making no one happy. This is why the cricket grounds in Tauranga, Wellington, Hamilton, Christchurch and Dunedin are all so good - purpose built for fan enjoyment by NZ cricket
I mean if Kosta coming home, shooting up the A league all time list of scorers and being top for most of the season wasn’t enough, f- em.
(And so many other stories- Hughes heroics to injury point, Salas the Costa Rican star coming right, the wobble before the run in, Al-Taay and Pennington. Rufer’s captaincy and belief in his team, the intriguing left back duel between Sutton and LKH, Ben Old, Alex Paulsen as always makes a triple save mundane…)
If they want to play smarmy games that’s their look out. If Ali Williams and a guy running onto the field overshadows that game, these guys are pork chops of the highest level.
As reported here Adelaide covers the Phoenix better, and as the city that reached the ACL final in an exhilarating run, I’d rather they follow us than any other patronising gits from NZ. Results at Coopers/Hindmarsh and in Melbourne are two things I really value. Because they’re great football towns.
I wanna know what Niche Cache says, not folk who are scared of football.
If we can get twelve thousand fans in Welly as a ceiling, let’s find a way to make it work. I don’t care about taking along insincere fans of the mono-culture. We don’t need the fans coming along waiting for a pitch invader or dancing girls or something. A but of fun pre-match stuff for the younger ones and a good game should be plenty.
For example both volleyball and netball participation rates at school exceed rugby. There’s certainly not comparable coverage there!
(Also certainly not including Voerman, Piney, Rollo, Burgess, Tony Smith I think sorry Tony, and the other print journos who’ve done a great job over the years of writing about the team…)
I'm sure Foley & his resources could make this new club run without Williams and these other persons. The stunt, if it was a stunt will not have a positive ending, except that it will show them to be even more snakier than Western United, Victory & WSW. The new club to dislike.
The media are conspiring to bury the Nix because they want Auckland FC, The Nasty Club, to get all the spotlight.
You'd almost think that givent hey way the game was commented, Piney and Spoonley couldnt stop rabbiting on about this player ot that player who's home is Auckland, blah blah this Auckland that. Utter rubbish
Not sure. I reckon they were just genuinely excited for Auckland FC, and probably hoped that a new glitzy club would by itself generate more football buzz overall without having to constantly battle against the media apathy towards the Nix.

Sure, I get the excitement, but the constant harping on about this player being from Auckland as if to suggest that these players would be heading to Auckland. It's just annoying, they may have grown up in Auckland but most of the neamed players have been in Wellington for ages as part of the academny setup.

Also for them growing up the Auckland team has never existed so if they wanted to support a team in NZ it would've been the Phoenix so maybe for a lot of them playing for the Phoenix is a dream come true. The only incentive playing for Auckland would be closer to family but if you want to be a professional footballer you're expecting to play away from home anyway.

Another possibility was that they were making a connection between the Auckland born (raised) players and the large audience in the stands. I would expect for some among the 18,002 it is the joy of seeing one of their own making it and succeeding on the big scene. Not any different from me screaming myself way back when, watching our man Siggie winning against Adelaide, single-handedly (or so it seemed at the time to all of us at the Lancaster Park in Christchurch).
The worst thing what could happen to us, is that one of the Auckland players get romantically involved in some world known star and the tabloids go nuts on how that star cheers him on each home games. Happened before.

Anika Moa? Thought she was very spoken for and producing a lot of kid’s albums?

Lorde with Joey Champness? A Kiwi Posh & Becs.
Be a smart play for his post football music career. Except of course he has an affair with Millie Elder-Holmes, and AFC's season unravels.
Edit - no make that an affair with Anna Mowbray. A plot straight from "Footballers Wives"!
Totally off topic but I have to relate a hilarious Posh/Becks story I just heard yesterday:
"In February 2002, while on international duty with England, David Beckham got into an argument with journalist Rob Shepherd, during a press conference, after Shepherd made a joke about David and Victoria Beckham’s habit of finishing second (David finishing second in the recent FIFA World Player of the Year vote, and Victoria’s inability to have a number 1 hit). Beckham sarcastically asked Shepherd “what do you know about music? How many people in your family have ever had a number one?”. Shepherd replied “one. My sister did backing vocals on 'Video Killed the Radio Star'."

I didn't think Auckland would have a Women's team for their first season.
Maybe we need a player just for the looks to attract a famous woman. Not that our players don’t look fantastic but they are all a bit to grounded. The only scandal they ever produced was drunk driving on battery powered golf cart not wearing N95 masks.
Soccer runs wild The Herald understands that several players including newly signed and insured Regista Dan ‘Pirlo’ Carter, as well as members of the ownership consortium, dined at the popular Foley hospitality establishment. Several of the party were later seen in the company of former All Black Marc Ellis in the VIP section of …… . [insert scandal/tame incident here] The long time Auckland resident was spotted carrying a road cone taken from xyz intersection and throwing handfuls of gravel into the harbour. Local resident Jamie Lee-Ross said he was disappointed in the players actions and that they had disturbed the peace of the usually quiet neighborhood. This follows an incident in Sydney where a player ate a kebab after a night out, 3 seasons before joining the Black Knights.

If it's not suitable for NPC then it's definitely not suitable for the A-League.

I will look out for Taylor bidding on Trade Me on a second hand jet ski in Takapuna.

"Posh Becks is a slapper She wears a Wonder-bra When she's not fudgeing Beckham She's fudgeing Ginola ... Come on you Spurs..."
Nice story on one News tonight on the Phoenix teams. Even Saville was wishing the Phoenix well.
Sadly, Saville is an butt kisser and it looks trendy, now that the Nix need to be taken seriously. The guy is so one eyed Rugby/All Blacks follower, not interested in football. He struggles to sound genuinely interested.

Are we all of a sudden not going to like the fact that we have a story on the news because of who it is presenting it?

Is it not a bit hypocritical to ask for media coverage because the Nix are doing well, then when we get it, complain because they're only covering the Nix to "look trendy?" You want people to follow the trend of reporting on successful teams then complain because they report on successful teams
Today's Morning Report had a live interview with Italiano on the upcoming away game against CCM. I nearly choked on my morning coffee in surprise, in a good way.
NZ media like winners, or a dramatic fall from the top (aka the Crusaders). Stories like the warriors made massive headlines last year and the RTS effect will keep them in the media for a while. Hopefully a league win and the finals series will put the nix at somewhrere near the top sports story for a month or two. Next season it'll all be focussed on the true NZ Derby
After little to no coverage this week in the lead-up to the game it's been good to see it in the media the last couple of days. Was a little annoying to see the Herald put it at only no.4 on their "best sport to watch this weekend" list. Behind both F1 and NCAA basketball as well as the Warriors (suspiciously sponsored by NZH) at no.1
