Also the weekend's 15,428 crowd is the fourth-highest regular season crowd at the Tin. Only behind: - 18,184 v CCM, 17 April 2022. (First game back after second stint in Wollongong.) - 18,345 v Adelaide, 30 November 2007. - 24,105 v Western, 22 May 2021. (First game back after first stint in the Gong.)
If we look at the last ten years the 12K and 15K are easily the two largest normal crowds in that time (if you discount the one off games after pandemic restrictions).
Earlier than that there are 6-7 that are larger in regular season: half 14K and half 13K. And an 18K that I’m guessing is the Beckham game?
Visited Melbourne over ANZAC weekend. First time back there in about 12 years. Rather stupidly I had forgotten about how it's AFL, AFL, AFL, Other & AFL.
Channel 7 news sports segment there lead with 3 or 4 AFL stories, then golf, some IPL cricket and finally the Victory loss to WSW. So no different to NZ and the rugby saturation. Actually worse I'd say with some of the Melbs media vehemently anti football with the round ball.
But then you change channels to nationwide state broadcaster SBS ('Soccer Bloody Soccer' it's bygone nickname) and it leads with Womens Australian Super Rugby Final, ALW semis, and a host of football from ALM & EPL. Then an additional feature on Francesco Totti visiting Aussie.
if the 18K crowd is in 2007 then it's too early for Save the Nix (2007 is first year we existed as a club). It's the Beckham game weekend with Adelaide game a couple days later iirc.
Yesterdays Crowd Goes Wild to my surprise actually lead with the Phoenix and quipped that they were finally giving the Nix the attention they deserved. Though as usual both hosts were wearing egg ball related shirts.
One News and Newshub had reporters at the Awards night. Can't remember when that happened previously.

Crowd goes Wild love a pisstake- the soccer-football thing is as much a go at rugby heads who weren’t about to let international €^$$} ball define themselves as anything. And what was James McOnie’s song? Genius.
Keep winning when we have a good crowd! Terry money had a clean slate and also the good vibes of the World Cup playoff and the cup itself boosting the Nix as well as the Beckham game. All things which made football associated with fun and success for the casual.
I have to be honest, my dad became a big Breakers fan and I followed them for a while when the had guys I knew from the Tall Blacks. Abercrombie going was really the last guy I knew and the Barstool sports wasn’t a positive connection. And despite trying to learn a little I’ve never been a basketball guy.
We need to introduce the general public to our stars. Maybe they knew Durante or Krishna or Moss or Singh. We’ve got to get Rufer, Kosta, Ball, Payne and Zawada out into the fringes of the general public knowledge.
Same with the Warriors- I know Johnson and the name Cleary, but I haven’t followed them since Stacey Jones, Kevin Campion and Steve Price. And Ali Lauitiiti. And I knew Vatuvai of course. I knew Kearney coached them with mixed fortunes. I know they’re doing well, and have a few friends who do follow and watch them, but I don’t have the time or TV access. If the highlights came up on the apps I get possibly, but they don’t. I check the table and news headlines.
Another couple of strong seasons and there will be folk in my situation with other franchises, but with the Nix who’ve revived their casual interest, gone to a few games etc. Let’s build that damn band wagon and all aboard! Plus the AFC bang is gunna help. It could be a good time coming into the next WC. Let’s hope.
I don't follow NRL, but I wonder if the players may stay on longer witn their clubs in NRL (say Warriors) than in ALM? For the general public, identification with their players might be a thing, so when they go and play elsewhere it might generate a loyalty drop? I have no idea, but am wondering about that.
The big difference is, the best league comp is the NRL so the best players stay in the comp, they don't move overseas. Similar with rugby, with the no play in NZ, no play for the All Blacks rule.
In NZ our best footballers inevitably end up overseas... so the players good enough to grab the attention leave, taking the buzz aorund them, with them.

It was painful listening to them talk about the Asian Champions League 🤣
My old boss sent me a message saying she had gone out to Porirua and on the way back was greeted by the yellow and black masses off to see The Hurricanes 🐝
I had to correct her and tell her it was Phoenix fans. Its like people think there is one professional sporting team in Wellington. 🙄

If they were Hurricanes' fans they would be black and yellow, not yellow and black.
Heaps of NIX Coverage this morning on the Radio - I listened to two stations on the way to work (via a stop at the doctors) and both had an interview that was based on the NIX - one with Italiano and another guy I didn't recognise.
Plenty of chat and kudos for the team. Ian Smith particularly glowing and promoting the SF.
Ian Smith has always had a healthy soft spot for football in this country, probably helped along by the fact his son was a former All White.
Enjoyed the same chat, although didn't catch the whole thing.
Long may the praise and chatter around the game in this country continue!
Ian Smith was a very good footballer in his younger years. He and his good mate Bruce Edgar both played for the Wellington under 14s in a North Island Tournament and both were chosen in the Tournament team.

Is the NRL League's hottest property though? I think Super League would challenge that statement.

You don't know your league. NRL is miles ahead of the super league
Each league club incl the Warriors gets $19.5M from the NRL! Whilst each ALM club is forecast next season to get about $1.5M from the APL??
Even allowing for the NRL clubs carrying larger squads, that's a truly massive difference. As the Auckland Blues Rugby CEO says when you get a $19M payout from your governing body you can go big on the marketing spend. Definitely a factor in the Wahs being able to get big crowds of late, when you have a big big marketing budget.
“What you’re seeing now is with sports like league, they’re generating a minimum of $36 million. $19.5 million from the NRL before you get started and that gives you a hell of a starting point,” he said.
“Then they’re advertising on top. The advertising spend for most of those clubs is four or five times Super clubs, on top of that they’ve got a league that’s very proactive as well.
“Cameron George (Warriors CEO) hit it on the head recentlywhen he said they’ve got a good functioning league, because they’ve got a good, functioning NRL.
Is travel & accommodation also paid for by the NRL, like it is covered by the league for the A-League? If so, that's just a entirely different ball game isn't it (metaphorically as well as literally)
I guess it's not that surprising this from a google search on the NRL's current media deal -
The game’s three television broadcast partners, Nine, Fox Sports and Sky TV New Zealand have now all agreed to new partnerships and increased commitments until the end of the 2027 season, with a record total media rights revenue for the game in excess of $400m per annum.
So with 17 NRL clubs that's $23M per club per year.
Meanwhile I see the current APL TV rights deal with Paramount is about $40M/year ie 10% of the NRL deal. Or with 12 ALM clubs about $3.3M per club per year -
The remaining A-League Men fixtures will be shown on the network's subscription streaming platform, Paramount+, which suffered from an array of technical issues in the sport's first year of a $200 million five-year partnership with the Australian Professional Leagues.
Your wealth as a league or professional sports club, is basically dictated by whatever the Broadcast Media see it as worth.
Slightly off topic, One News sports bulletin tonight ran a short story on Sydney v Macarthur match. I can't recall when they've ever did a story on a non Phoenix A-League match, well this season at least.
I hope there will be some coverage this week now that we know we'll be playing Victory again.

if you were a media company of any note in NZ or Aus one of the first sporting events you're gonna chase is the NRL/Origin etc. It easily one of the most watched sporting events across both countries. The NRL has been going since 1998, they are established and well supported by their fans who love their clubs with a passion, much like football in Europe. Some of these clubs in Aus have literally small towns supporting them, with cafes, bars, gambling sites all within the precinct of the league club. If the A-league could replicate this then we'd be golden.
No one cares when a NZ Super Rugby team plays an Aussie side, it's all about the derbies. Football will be the same here. We will get pre match and post match coverage like never before. It can only be good for us.
At Sutton and Paulsens press conference there were questions asked on behalf of James McOnie about Kostas influence on the team so perhaps a Kosta story on Crowd Goes Wild tonight?
RNZ did not try and squeeze Nix into the sports bulletin at 8am today opting instead to have a longer piece on Morning Report after the news, with Sam Sutton's interview. Nice shoutout to the Nix from the Hurricanes right after that, awesome.
