I know the new season is over a couple of months away and theres still time in the transfer window. But i feel that this season for the Phoenix could be the death or the start of somthing special for the club. So Heres the problem , there is a huge amount of pressure on this club to finish in the top four this season.

- The Media/Nz expect it.
- We the fans expect it.
- The Phoenix as a whole expect it.

Personally i feel our squad is no where near top four potential. Last season apart from a reasonable defence and a very good team effort. The team looked very poor inthe midfield with slow boring buildups, poor set pieces and bar smeltz very poor finishing.

Now looking at the squad now what has improved? We have added Greenace, Dieago and a new keeper and lost smeltz, draper, moss, kwasnik, gao and dodd from the start of last season.

For me the squad has not been improved.

Greenace looks like a proven goal scorer but also looks injury prone. Dieago looks like he could improve the midfield which is good.

However at the moement all our hopes for a top4 finish are pinned on these two new additions improving our squad. To put this inperspective last season our squad without smeltz scored only 9 goals. So Greenace and Dieago have to find 6 goals each atleast to be back level with the amount of goals we scored last season.

This hugeley  important season relies on our signings we make pre-season which is disappointing because lets face it herberts dips into the transfer market for this club have often been very poor and have not taken the club foward.

I think we will finish 6th again this season. Not to lack of effort, commitment desire only because the players we have are not up to the standard of the other players in the league.

I look foward to be proven wrong and for us to finish in the top 4 now . What are peoples views on the up and coming season?

P.S just purchased my first season ticket as i only attended about half the home games last year and enjoyed them. Come on NiX!

It's a top 6 this season, so you have us making the play-offs... inside three seasons... better than any NZ side in an Aus competition has done before.

Yay us !

Yay forgot about that! im just worried about where all the goals we need are going to come from. Aswell as injuries we definatly need atleast 2 maybe even 3 more strikers.

edit. just looked at some of last seasons stats Kwasnik had 11 assits didnt realise he did that much..

How well the nix play this year will be dependent on the 'engine room' - Brown, Diego, Ferrentee and upfront with Greenacres

Also need to factor in Lia coming back, which gives more options in midfield.

I'll wait until we've got the squad all signed up. Big problem, IMO, last year was a lack of creativity in midfield. Hopefully, Diego and possibly Daniel can go some way to fixing that this season. If we get a decent strike partner for Greenacre, we'll be in business.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

We still have a couple more signings to come, that lithuanian striker/winger sounds like he could be a livewire! perhaps that x-factor we are lacking at the moment. Scoring goals since Smeltz left was always going to be an issue...hopefully we have a striker or two coming in!?!

Who'd have thought it...... football fans deluded.
Isn't that normal?
Let's wait until the squad is finalised before passing judgment.

Biggest worry for me is obviously not having sufficient striking stocks and also Diego getting inevitably injured and becoming the next Kwasnik.

If we get several injuries our squad is also bare thin because of the lack of a youth team.

I still don't understand the emphasis that some people place on having more than one decent striker! Surely we would have finished Top 4 last season if we had at least one of the Midfield contributing to the scoreline and I think if you did some research you would see that the successful sides from last season all had Midfielders between 5 and 7 goals each.

Our 2nd Top Scorer after Smeltz was Tim Brown with 2!

Imagine if our Midfield scored an extra 10 goals last season...

* Positive For and Against Record
* More than likely a better Win/Loss Ratio
* Probably a Top 4 finish!

No chance Kwassi had 11 assists. Not enough game time, and had he made that many assists he'd have been offered anything he wanted to re-sign. An error in the stats methinks.

So you think that we will do well this season with one unproven, recently injured striker? You're mad.

Its a bit early to pass judgement at this stage.....I will wait until the recruitment is finished and we have played our two warmup games against A-League teams.

I think we are on track with recruitment....they are attempting to strengthen areas where we were weak last year. i.e attacking midfielders/depth in the striking department.

We will do OK if....and it is a big if....the new guys Greenie, Diego, Astro and the Dutchie all settle quickly, play well and stay uninjured for most of the season. The back 7 are settled and should be hard to break down....not too many worries there.

The major worry is where will the goals come from. Last season the top 4 averaged 32 goals. With  nearly a third more games you will probably need to score around 40 to be near top.
Hearfield, Costa, Daniel and Bertos got 5 total last year. Of the new guys Diego is not a noted goal scorer. Greenie and Astroclaus are noted goal scorers. We are going to need them to score more than 25 goals....is that possible? Greenie 15 and Astroclaus 10?

What we will need is for our attacking mids to get on the score sheet more often....we also need more out of our wingbacks....you can't go another season with none of them scoring. Plus our central defenders need to be more potent at set pieces.

Quite simple really....if all of the above happens we will win the League.
(or we could win heaps of games 1-0.....which does not tend to happen in the high scoring A-League)

Did he get two or three?  I remember he definitely got us a few crucial goals, won us the game, 2-1 against Sydney.

Was it against Melbourne when we desperately needed a goal, Tim Brown pops up in space and bangs one in "Johnny on the spot Tim Brown slams one in to bring the Phoenix level" - de Jong (words to that effect).

While not overly confident of being a title challenger I think the team is on the right track recruitment wise...last year the focus was on filling the gaps in defence (hence McKain, Durante and Sigmund).  This year it's up front - at this stage I can't say that the recruitment matches last year, but all it needs are more two strikers - and the steps to get them are there - and we could well have a competitve squad.

Yeah 3. No way should we judge yet.

Perhaps he was reading the 'minutes played' column?

Come to think of it, I don't think we even scored 11 goals last season.
