The hype is probably the worst thing of these matches. Even now its like the media is coked up to high heaven.

Unleash Greenie and his furious reserves.
As much as I think Chiefy should go, is it a matter of nobody wanting the job as they know what the management is like?

yep. People running the club have no ambition and have let a losing culture get so deeply ingrained that I wonder if it can even be exorcised

  • Proud of the team after the red. Fought until the end. Cosgrove is a cheating a hole. Terrible refereeing. So every contest in thr box is a penalty if the attacker just falls over.
Sacking Chiefy wont fix our club. The rot goes a lot deaper

Looking at those pen decisions again. No AFC player was getting to the ball in both instances - which is frustrating.

18 years of hope and “maybe, this year”. It sure is a way to build character.

At least they are better at playing football than I am, I suppose.

Not Rufer’s best game IMO but criticising him seems unnecessary given his level over the past few seasons including this one.

I’m very frustrated with Chiefy too but I’m not sure what would be different in this game with a different coach - ok so we conceded that same early goal but we also matched them for most of the game despite being a player down. It was only after the second penalty that we couldn’t get back into the game and to be frank that’s all about the refereeing team, not ours

No shame in that. Last week and this week is a new beginning for this side, they never gave up.
this is a dangerously deluded take

Of course sacking the coach does not guarantee a turnaround in performance and/or results. But at this stage of absolute embarrassment for club and fans, it's the only right call to make.

I would advise people don't even engage with the insane criticism of Rufer that we saw in this thread. When fit and healthy the only thing you could criticise him for in the last 4 seasons is his shooting, and it seems like he has even sorted that in the last two games

That’s why Corica didn’t want Mata- he wanted to play football, not do the Sydney whine and flop.

Ballack like shot from Rufer/ there was a real and entertaining game at 1-1 until the refs decided not to ruin someone’s multi.

But you wrap your arms around a striker in the box and your just asking for trouble and there can be no denying our guys did that. Makes no difference at all for how long they they did it, and that dickhead Cosgrove made a meal of it as any striker should do.

Agreed. But the consistency with the game even is appalling. Holding and pushing are fouls wherever the ball is.

Watching Jets and City at the moment, and there is again so much being let go,and so much inconsistency.

The inconsistency is the problem, if your gonna suddenly start var checking defenders for grabbing/ holding come into the dressing room before kick off and say 'hey guys, remember how we have been ignoring this? Well from now on we won't be and we will var check it' because if your a defender and you watch a league each week you can be forgiven for thinking it's fine.

I don't understand the ist penalty decision.  After the player went down Auckland nearly scored, ball cleared off the line.  If theball had crossed for an Auckland goal it would have stood.  Would that then have been considered playing advantage?  I believe advantage had been played so no penalty should have been given.
Further.just to add that taking off a central defender at half time for whatever reason (no way to justify it) was one of the daftest decisions I have ever seen.  See what happened later, we had NO central defenders for most of the second half.  There was so much wrong with the way Nix played that someone should stand up and be counted.
The Nix did battle on extremely well and I did not think Auckland were as good as people SAY they are but I still feel Nix tactics  were woeful at times, no fault at all of the players.
 We really need a Coach.

Watched the game down the port for the atmosphere.

Need to watch the replay tonight but I was in the first row so had a preety good look at the man handling in the penalty area.

It was diabolical and really don’t have a problem with any referee who would give a penalty for that.

I think it’s taken 35 odd games for AFC to be awarded a penalty so I guess the nix were unfortunate to have two awarded against them.

Still however haven’t scored one 😂

Josh was absolutely immense. Just as well too as he and Chief are the favourite target for the Port. Could have rivalled the six from last season if it wasn’t for him.

One portly drunk Phoenix fan with a sign around his neck decided to enter the Port and headed up the stairs. He was pushed back and luckily a bunch of security grabbed him and sent him on his way.

Good crowd at just under 23k.

I mean exactly.
We’ve had two years of the referee directive to limit cards and encourage a flowing game, contests for the ball and not Alex Brosque, ie to not reward players who went to ground under minimal contact and here we see 3 big decisions see on light contact.

One where a player has arguably come back from an offside position and gained an advantage from it and two times when the player wouldn’t have been in a position to affect the play even without the contact.

Add that to a lot of early offside calls and the card on Eze for being fouled by Verstaete.

Piney creaming his pants.

Ugh, I've had the replay on whilst cooking the tea.

Piney only has two problems - he talks too much, and he talks too much crap.

He has verbal diarrhea by radio standards, let alone TV. He needs to shut up.

His Commentary exemplifies everything that is wrong with modern commentators .

Why cant we just have crowd sounds played so we don't have to listen to their diabolical "commentary" ??

23k there today? Really , there were seas of blue seats from what I saw on tv?

We were unlucky today but we clearly need more quality. They’re not a good side, certainly not without Sakai but they do obviously have a couple of better players in hall and verstrate. A lot of dirty sharkhouse tactics which I hate seeing in football. It was constant. We, however, didn’t test a shark keeper enough, which has been a problem all season. Can’t argue with the pens, as pathetically soft as they were, you cannot use your arms on another player in the box. Frustrating that it was so basic. Peach of a finish by rufer, has to be said.

Urgh.

Don’t doubt the crowd.

At any one time you have a shark load of people walking around that place at either end and even people in the corners of the ground lying on the grass.

I want this feature for lots of football. The euro quals/nations league the comms endlessly spouting crap, sometimes about different games, for…reasons.

I have come to accept that many people like “summarisers” giving the life story of each person who touches the football, rather than spending time commentating on what is happening on the pitch at that particular moment. I’ve come to accept this, but not like it.

My 2 cents on the game
- its so frustration week after week to talk about “individual mistakes” that lead to goals.. we probably don’t have the players that play such a high-line so I dont understand why we insist on it week after week only to be left saying “individual mistakes” lead to this goal? Surely a coaches job is to bring out the best of your players, can we really say the high line is brining out the best out of defence? Conceding soft goals every week would suggest no

- James man, you gotta be better then that.. A leader and a import defender cannot lose sight of his direct opponent like that, let alone get the ball to bounce, thought he was poor in that way, and someone we should we all expect better from..

- Josh’s game was outstanding, but its a bad feeling when the goalkeeper is your best player

- 0-5 in derbies is now a serious blight on Chiefy’s CV, if he were to leave the club and look for other coaching work elsewhere, I’m sure that will be looked into ,and in a more cut-throat league this will be heavily scrutinised.

- Like the all whites, and the under 20’s, our game management and focus really needs work.. you can start off games so poorly like we do, we could have easily conceded 1.30 into the game if Randell hit the volley, and when you’re 1-0 down, you want to concentrate and start second half well, to get a red card so quickly is infuriating, to me that’s one the leaders of the club, so where my frustration with James comes in.

- Both Randell & de Vries are two players who have gotten away from us, but that’s a a topic for another day

- I dont think this season is a write off mainly because there are so many average teams this season, so a finals finish might not be out of the picture, but we are so far from contending for the title we can forget about it

Just finished watching the replay.

I rebound the red card multiple times and it really looks like the Aycjland player starts falling before contact is made.

The pens were unfortunately pens,  even if they were soft.  Hopefully VAR is consistent and any shirt holding in the box going forward is an instant pen.

Eze getting yellow carded  when he clearly won the ball in real time and in the replays looks like he got fouled is rough as guts.

Fark it sucks as it really doesn't feel like we were the worst team.

Ah well.  On and upwards.

What a half time show.

*Doyle criticising the Nix on air for shark he used to do*
*Asking dumb questions of depressed Nix away fans who just want to have a whinge, then the guy on drums can barely make any noise*
*Topped off by flogging the fudgeing betting odds live on air (great for children, vulnerable populations and former addicts)*

I was super shocked to hear a broadcaster advertising the odds. Sky/TAB seem to forget that this game is being broadcast into countries with very strict laws on gambling.

As much as I've long since thought Chiefy is out of his depth, I really don't think replacing him would make any difference.

The club needs wholesale changes in the back office and management group for any kind of success to happen... But that's never going to happen, at least until its too late.

I just watched the replay. I cant remember being this angry about a football match. I can except that AFC have better players overall. What I cant except is their constant shiitehousery. They are masters of it. AFC gave away the most fouls in the AL last season.
In this match every time we got something going they fouled us. Brimmer probably at least six times. LBS came on and immediately blitzed May with pace and got cynically fouled. They do it and the refs let them away  with it.
And the king of the shiitehousers is Cosgrove. Constantly niggling and fouling. Already has a bundle of yellow cards. Hes an expert at diving under the lightest touch. Hes the biggest guy on the field but goes down at a touch.
Ok you can say hes cleaver.. ..but in my opinion its cheating.
I thought we played with a lot of heart and effort. But it really grinds my gears that we got beaten by cheats

I don’t have anything to say about the game that hasn’t been said already, but the way the away bay was managed this time round was a definite improvement - so only fair that the rules get applied consistently (off the pitch, at least…).

So thanks to the FRG and the club staff involved for making at least one part of the experience better.

Don’t you really want consistency in the same game though? I didn’t take much notice but was it happening all the time at the other end as well? Even in this game, the Ref spent a bit of time at corners telling them all to behave, the players  continued not to do so and were rightly pinged. It is (holding) happening a lot in the A League (not sure about other leagues because I usually only watch the Nix and AFC) and I want it stamped out frankly. I agree with the ref and hope the rest of them get tough on it too.

Wasn't able to watch the game.  Don't even think I want to watch the highlights.

I'm getting real tired of that team of dislikable A holes.  Can we just go back to 2023 cause this timeline absolutely sucks.

Did Josh’s second penalty save count? So how many is that now that he’s saved?

His roar when he saved that first one!

Definitely counts because it will go down as a missed penalty from De Vries.

Three for me, and two for them.

Holding ain’t gonna be stamped out as it is just part of the elite game now. It’s the level of holding/time hanging on that is subjectively pinged now.
An EPL var would have thrown the second one out
