Great work , bizzare fixation with one player though. Interestin information about his position and what he's done so far.

I fail to see though why Daniel was so bad in your eyes?  He was one of the best on the park in my opinion (Obviously Ifill is well above everyone there though)

Irfill's first touch is so far superior to the rest of the team, except perhaps Bertos it's amazing. Great to have someone with that sort of technical ability in the team. If only Ferrante could finish goals like him, then we'd have a real attacking threat...

Actual work on the layout and the typing (4 finger typing) 2 hours, interview 45 mins (Thanks again Daniel). Updating it took another 10-15 mins (Correcting errors  and adding bits.)

I like it LG, well done. Daniel's a personal fave of mine too, so I'm hoping he can keep showing the same form he did last week and help the Phoenix do something good for Wellington and NZ football this season.

Good effort LG.

There's something very likeable about Daniel (and his infectious enthusiasm), and I think many of us in our heart of hearts really WANT to see Daniel do well.

And it WAS a half decent effort on Friday - hence the disappointment in the theme of this thread.

I'm all for giving the creative enthusiasts, that take the odd risk with the ball, a fair crack. Good for the game. Unfortunately, a view not always shared by the sidelines .. at all levels.

I know, I know, its serious!

Very true Turfmoore. If Superman looked like daniel, some would still not be happy. I'm not saying he doesn't have his weak points but in that last game he certainly was addressing them as well as setting up some serious chances. That cross after 42 seconds should have been buried. Although I wonder if Tim could believe his luck so soon after kick off.

Yes Critical Lemon, we have been burned by some Brazilians, but we cant judge every Brazilian by them. Just like we cant judge Chen by what G** did not offer us.

Surely it should be "if Daniel looked like Superman?" I can't get the image of Daniel in Superman shorts out of my head now

I guess being fairly new to this forum and finding out that that you're in a minority with your feelings about Daniel, you're feeling a little lonely. Cheer up.  You only chose to bag the one guy whom having not being given a start since early last season, played a damn good game despoite the lack of match practice.

As for Diego, not impressed with hsi cameo last Fri. Was poor indeed. Still perhaps better days ahead for him. I hope so. Mind you I hope that for all of our players.

I think Daniel was good value on Friday, and I'm happy to see attacking midfielders getting a shot in the middle of the park instead of our DMs + wings mentality.

Well it's hard to bag Daniel when you've got Brown, Lia and Ferrante in the team...

Is it me or did Daniel look a lot bigger in 2008..?

Thought Daniel had a quality game on the weekend, showed a bit of creativity we had been lacking.

People cannot ask for the nix to play attacking football, etc and then expect a midfield composed of brown/mckain/lia/ferrante or even the party boy to provide it. If we play two heavy hitters like Brown and McKain, that should procide enough of a platform to play Daniel.

Nice work LG, I speak to him in portuguese about Botafogo whenever I see him at Brazil offical events etc and he is always a great guy.

Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

Trouble is it would be pretty dull football with McKain and Brown playing and even if Daniel is playing good football he would have to be something very special to provide an atack impetus with Brown and McKain slowing things down...not a popular point of view I guess but brown and McKain in the midfield?  I'd rather have McKain and leave Brown out altogether and play someone a little bit more central

No, I'm not complaining about something I saw up at Peka Peka beach, more the quality of our two Brazilian superstars.

Finally watched Daniel in a full 90 minute match on Friday for the first time in I don't know when, and realise why he doesn't get a start very often, he maybe of a decent skill level but has no pace, or concept of the quick fast football we seemed to be trying to play, every time he got the ball it slowed things right down as he dwindled on it and pondered what to do and then 8/10 lost possession.  I don't question his desire to play for the Phoenix but doubt his heart is really in itt

I guess it all comes down to the style of football you are used to. If you have been bought up on a diet of Anglo football where it is very direct and players tend to be busy hard workers who run all day then Brazilians may appear to be slow or even lazy. If however you follow Latin football where the build up is slower and the players often rely on flair to attack then you have another style to appreciate.

Internationally it has been  Brazil, Italy, Spain , Portugal, France etc who tend to do very well. The Anglo game tends to come unsuck at the highest level.

As for the Phoenix I would much prefer to watch the attacking flair of Daniel and Felipe that we saw in season one to the boring stodge we saw in season two.

A player does not have to appear to be fast and busy to be an asset to the team. I would rather have someone like Daniel putting in crosses like the one that Greenie scored against the Roar than watch some grafter run around all day.

Now you have taken both extreme ends of the spectrum here, a grafter and Brazilian flair...is there any reason we can't have a bit of both in the one package?  Are we that good a team we can afford to be carrying players who, because they are "attackers", don't put in a shift for the team.

Have been watching Ifill put in a good shift and also be our most dangerous player so far this season, it is possible to mix the two.

For me Daniel gave the ball away too much in the last match and generally did very little to try and win in back.  We need a balance in the team and sometimes you need people to graft and work hard in games to win the ball, if you didn't Brazil would win every world cup, but they don't.  You still need your Lia's or McKain's or whoever in your team to work hard, but I would like our so called flair players to put in a shift too during games, we are not yet good enough to have players in the team who don't put in a shift.

When we attack at pace, one touch, quick passing football we look a team, when we slow it right down and dally on the ball, we look ordinary, for me Daniel slowed the movement and passing down a lot and we lost our momentum we have when Bertos and Ifill etc are in full flow.

Are you a reff, or only blind? Against the Cakes, Daniel put in a really good effort defensively, it is obviously something that he has been working on, and he won back a couple of balls he lost that night. Something noted by many other people whose knowledge of the game I respect.

Will not disagree that his defensive game was pitiful in the past, though.

Granted I am probably a bit biased, but all I have to say is don't give up on Diego just yet. I know nothing about Daniel, since I'm having to watch the season from thousands of miles away, but I do know Diego.  I will admit he hasn't shown much just yet,but I know it's there and I am confident he will start proving himself very soon.  Diego may have spent quite a bit of tiime in the US,but he is indeed still Brazilian and returns there during the off season.  Give him a little bit more time before you totally write him off!!

Do I sound like his mother? Probably so and with good reason, but I know the game and I know him regardless of my relationship with him. I have been his biggest fan for years, but have also been his strongest critic.  Give him a chance!

Thanks for letting me have my say. I really enjoy reading all the posts on here and enjoy listening to the games. I can hardly wait until I get a chance to actually come back there and watch a game live.

I watched him at one point in the second half, a high ball was dropping towards him, he was watching it, and stood completely still and watch as he gave the Adelaide defender a free header to clear the thing, no challenge, no attempt to put him off, no attempt to win the ball in what would have been a dangerous position for us to win possession, I thought that was shocking to be honest, yes he is a skillfull player but he needs to at least make it hard for the opposition to win the ball back....

Good to see there's someone still supporting Diego, American Fan.
He came to the Nix with some promise, but because of medical concerns and/or injuries we have yet to see him at his best.
It hasn't looked good for him of late, but if we could see dramatic improvement from Diego in the future and the flair we were expecting, it would improve the attacking midfield options Ricki can call on.

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

Got any other examples? Because apart from the two balls he won back I remember him chasing back quite a long way after lost balls as well. I think it is also easy to forget how tiny Daniel actually is. He is miniature compared to a lot of midfielders and especially defenders in this league. If you are dribbling with the ball and a bloke far stronger than you comes in at you shoulder to shoulder, more often than not you will lose out. I just want him tracking back and being a mongrel when that happens.

That was the one that got me out of my seat, watching a professional footballer not trying one ounce to win a ball that was within a foot of him left a rather strong imprint in my mind from that game!

As I was sitting down on our right wing during the 2nd half I did have a good view of his play, and he certainly ran into trouble more often than not when he had the ball, simply, and rather easily, crowded out by the Adelaide players.
