No, I'm not complaining about something I saw up at Peka Peka beach, more the quality of our two Brazilian superstars.
Finally watched Daniel in a full 90 minute match on Friday for the first time in I don't know when, and realise why he doesn't get a start very often, he maybe of a decent skill level but has no pace, or concept of the quick fast football we seemed to be trying to play, every time he got the ball it slowed things right down as he dwindled on it and pondered what to do and then 8/10 lost possession. I don't question his desire to play for the Phoenix but doubt his heart is really in itt
I guess it all comes down to the style of football you are used to. If you have been bought up on a diet of Anglo football where it is very direct and players tend to be busy hard workers who run all day then Brazilians may appear to be slow or even lazy. If however you follow Latin football where the build up is slower and the players often rely on flair to attack then you have another style to appreciate.
Internationally it has been Brazil, Italy, Spain , Portugal, France etc who tend to do very well. The Anglo game tends to come unsuck at the highest level.
As for the Phoenix I would much prefer to watch the attacking flair of Daniel and Felipe that we saw in season one to the boring stodge we saw in season two.
A player does not have to appear to be fast and busy to be an asset to the team. I would rather have someone like Daniel putting in crosses like the one that Greenie scored against the Roar than watch some grafter run around all day.
Long Live Brazilians
Now you have taken both extreme ends of the spectrum here, a grafter and Brazilian flair...is there any reason we can't have a bit of both in the one package? Are we that good a team we can afford to be carrying players who, because they are "attackers", don't put in a shift for the team.
Have been watching Ifill put in a good shift and also be our most dangerous player so far this season, it is possible to mix the two.
For me Daniel gave the ball away too much in the last match and generally did very little to try and win in back. We need a balance in the team and sometimes you need people to graft and work hard in games to win the ball, if you didn't Brazil would win every world cup, but they don't. You still need your Lia's or McKain's or whoever in your team to work hard, but I would like our so called flair players to put in a shift too during games, we are not yet good enough to have players in the team who don't put in a shift.
When we attack at pace, one touch, quick passing football we look a team, when we slow it right down and dally on the ball, we look ordinary, for me Daniel slowed the movement and passing down a lot and we lost our momentum we have when Bertos and Ifill etc are in full flow.
