I referee (junior football normally), so I'm
a student of the Laws of the Game.
It's a particularly topical Law - see recent

Newport 2, Aylesbury 4.
NEWPORT'S FA Cup dreams were dashed on Saturday away at Aylesbury
United, when the Island side lost 4-2
 including a most
bizarre own goal by goalie Jamie Bray.
Manager Derek Ohren claimed the own goal, scored
from a free kick outside the box, was the oddest he had ever seen
in either his playing, or managing career.
He said: It
was the most bizarre goal I have ever seen. He was about 18 yards
from his area, mis-kicked the ball and it ended up in his own goal.
It killed the game for us, dead and
buried.
Darren Powell had put the Islanders up 1-0 after 13 minutes and
even after Aylesbury equalised, Powell took the Port ahead again
before the break.
But Aylesbury bounced back to level affairs and then went on to
take the lead, with
Brays own goal killing
Newports chances of a
comeback.
The match was marred at the end with a mass brawl involving around
20 players, with
Newports Jamie White
one of the players sent off.
Ohren said: We missed
two or three good opportunities to score and in the first half I
thought we played very well. But again individual error cost us
dearly.
Following the game it was confirmed
Brays own goal should
not have stood. Newport, however, decided they were unable to cover
the costs of making an appeal.

The game should be replayed. There is precedent for it.
Remember the WC06 qualifier in Asia where a referee made an error
over a penalty kick (the kick was scored but an
attacking player encroached - the ref awarded a goal kick
instead of a re-take!) and FIFA voided the game and ordered it
replayed.
