Not really wanting to get into a debate about WCC funding, but I think the money does come from ratepayers. Commercial ratepayers are still ratepayers and any extra costs they face get passed on to their customers (us) or will into cut their profits.

What peeves me about the reporting is that they're not pointing out that Terry Serepisos is fronting up with most of the dosh. Unfortunately, I don't think either he or the WCC will be able to publicly say exactly how much each is paying as these deals usually have confidentiality clauses.
 
There is NO (I know this is really hard for some people to understand) extra money coming out of ratepayers pockets for this event. The budget for the Events Promotions budget was set last year or whenever there last budget was set. The money has already been collected. The problem is, if the council doesn't spend it (i.e. a budget surplus), the ratepayers complain that they are wasting money, if they do spend it... the ratepayers complain they are wasting money. When was the last time you heard any ratepayer happy about anything, ever.  NEVER, thats because content people don't go around standing on soapboxes screaming "I'm fine with the rates, its OK with me what they spend it on". We only get to hear the whiners and moaners, and its boring the hell out of most people and taking the shine off what is the biggest PR boost for NZ football in 25 years. If you are really upset with the council, send them a letter, just stop annoying us on the forums about it. Or keep it off topic where it belongs.

Not really the point. It still came from ratepayers in the first place unless the council has started printing money behind the Reserve Bank's back. It's like saying the next dopey thing the central government decides to fund from contingency funding in the last budget into isn't being funded by taxpayers because it was set aside at the last budget.

I don't know what media reports you're looking at. If you read today's Dom Post you'll see there are 2 articles - one in the front section, one in the sport section - and pretty much the first thing they say is that Terry will be fronting up most of the money.
 
The WCC is funding a very small amount. If you're so concerned about the way they spend our rates, take a drive down Cobham Drive towards the airport and look at the thousands of dollars they've spent on sh*tty "works of art" like that spinning light thing, the neon flax and that massive orange needle.
 
At least Beckham is going to make us some money.

Admitedly, I hadn't looked at all reports. I had heard the RNZ bulletins, seen last night's TVNZ and TV3 stories on their websites, and read the NZPA article on Stuff (no longer there I think). If the papers are more balanced this morning, good on them.

Skaman, fair enough not liking the guy, but i don't think he has single-handedly caused the changes in English football
 
surely Sky (along with the plus side of it's benefits of more football on tv here) is one of the main causes of the changes, which have been made worse by the mad money brought in by foriegn ownership

I would like to see one example of how David Beckham has had a bad attitude in any relation to football. Sure, his wife is a hoe, and thats what draws attention to him. But apart from her, he has always seemed positive, generous, and given everything for his respective team.

Sorry but an absurd comment. As above, his attitude on the pitch is exceptional, in fact its one of the things hes most praised for. as a football fan, Ill go to the game to see his football performance, and as a top professional I bet he will be spot on. And be realistic, the wage structure in the English game has nothing to do with Beckham

there seems to be too much ignorance when it comes to how the world works. David Beckham hasnt played in the premier league for nearly 5 years now. Only since the Abramovich era have the wages for english players skyrocketed. And at least the deal with sky in uk shares the money around reasonably evenly, in spain and italy, the big clubs get to sell tv coverage individually which nearly guarantees the big clubs stay the big clubs. How is this beckhams fault? Yes, he was offered a stupid amount of money by the galaxy, but he would be stupid for not taking it. Its up to the galaxy to recoup the money, not beckham personally. He is just an employee of the club.

Im getting tired of defending this football event to all the negtive moaners out there. Im not trying to have a go at anyone in particular but i have seen some of the stupidest uniformed comments in the last 2 days to make me lose faith in mankind.

Yea definately, its pressure on Becks to perform and with 55 minutes of action,if he chooses to play the bare minimum, i dont think we are likely to see mch spark. Hes not a player that will cut us up but will threaten with a few dangerous crosses (i hope for the fans sake anyway! and maybe even a trademark free kick fingers crossed!

I think its highly likely you'll see greater flair in the likes of Fellipe, Daniel, Donavan and Xavier. Truth be told though Beckham will bring people to the stadium, where the players above proabably wouldnt and when its all said and done thats the aim of things aint it?

I'm another who is interested to see how anyone can argue that Beckham's attitude and wages have ruined English football. The two most significant developments in English football over the last 15 years are the creation of the Premiership (cue: power shift to clubs from the FA, foreign invasion of players, retention of money at the top flight to cement the status quo etc) and the Abramovich (cue: foreign takeover of clubs, inflation of transfer values, inflation of wages).
 
The Premiership came in before Beckham had made his professional debut (debuted in the 1992/93 season against Brighton trivia fans). The Russian took over Chelsea after Beckham had left for Spain.
 
Praise of Beckham's attitude is the one thing that unites the game - his work rate and dedication, the fashion in which he regained his place for Real Madrid and England after being dropped by both... where's the attitude problem? How many other stars of the game would respond to that situation in this way? 
 
As for wages, didn't he earn about 90K GBP per week when last in English football. That's being well paid, but hardly ruinous or even much to cause surprise to the 2003 Premiership. Of course, when you factor in endorsements Beckham's earnings are huge, but that's besides the point.
 
Not liking Beckham is one thing and a valid enough view to hold. Accusing him of ruining English football with his attitude and wages just sounds ignorant.

The council will always find stuff to spend my rates on that i dont agree with, but helping market a major football event in Wellington is NOT one of them.

Hey Gooner howz it going? I never thought I'd see the day a Gooner fan supported Becks unless it was in an England shirt.
 
The good news about this deal is if he's injured, tghe game is postponed to another date when he's fit. I have to be honest though, Bringing Barcelon here would have been impressive, so many quality stars including Henry. But the Galaxy without Becks nor Donovan and who have you got?? That might be a whinge but there's also a lot of truth in it.
 
I hope it is a success for all concerned but I find it hard to get motivated over this team.
