intersting coment about leo in the article on stuff

"Nancarrow said Leo Bertos was the most remarkable athlete at the club. "As soon as he's finished a beep test he could do it again. He's a freak. His rate of recovery is unbelievable."

so Leo is a fitness freak, and should be able to run a lot harder than he currently does - so he's just a lazy arse??

He's good at the beep test but apparently crap at the honk test.

Hmm hes got the best fitness/recovery rate, yet he gets subbed most games.

He should be pressing the back line with hi pace. Ward has started to give him some decent service I think.

Also, Last week, he ended up playing sole striker and greeny played further back. Think Leo a ctually looks quite good as a cou nterattacking player. Can out pace people so he should make the most of it
I dunno .... people talk about his perceived pace.... how often does he  use it if he has it? I struggle to recall to many times when he has gone past a defender with pace, taken the ball to the bi line and whipped in a pin poit cross....??

I agree...he looks positively pedestrian at times. After a brief run then proceeds to just saunter around

so he's lazy!, we all been told he's fit enought and fast enough to be the winger we want and yet he rarely gives us the 90 minutes we deserve.....

But us pulling the trigger... Quite often someone will make a break, maybe have one defender and the goal keeper and an opportunity to shoot and we just hold it up.<snip>

Interesting question. I've seen this many times with many teams. I always end up asking it Is it a perceived fault or is it reality? I remember being at Goodison ( in the mid 80s) and this was the question being asked. I'd just got back there and thought they were using their chances well but the crowd about were really getting on their backs....   Mmm....  I remember thinking that is was it familiarity breeding contempt...  is it the same here?   much to ponder....

Yeah someone told me stats wise for the league we are a solid last for having attempts at goal, though the chances are there, we just won't pull the trigger.

Leo Bertos is a lemon.
That is the best way to describe him.
His goal contribution is not great.
He cannot cross from the right (normally gets cut out at the near post) or he hits the defender in front of him.
I don't think he had shot on goal at the world cup.
He has some pace but really if he was any good, then the world cup would've seen him signed up. What happen nothing. He is not a true two footed player and drops his shoulder when he feints to the left, easy to read and cut out.
He is not strong enough in the air or has the ability to hold the ball to be a real wolrd class player..

You will see this against the South American teams, how good Leo is.

Not very ....

I mostly agree, but to be fair I'm not sure that anyone got a shot on goal at the world cup. At all. Somehow the ball just ended up in the back of the net twice, which was awesome

Has Leo really opened a cafe in Manners Mall called Caffee Zoro next to Burger King?  Anyone checked it out?

I thought Leo was our man of the match against the heart. And I thought the rousing reception he got when he walked around in front of bays 20 - 25 when he was subbed off showed that a lot of people thought he'd had a good game.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I think Bertos had a great game and to be honest I think it saved us against the heart.  Top technical ability just lacks confidence at times.

Leo had a great game, but the wind saved us against the Heart.

I reckon leos problem is he has too much confidence, trying to beat players when, lets be honest, he isnt that good at it instead of crossing the ball

I think its the exact opposite. He always tracks back on decent attacking situations.

think when he was playing in the 343 he didnt know what to do. similar in the all whites situation, he didnt want to overcommit to the attack when he knew he'd have to get back and defend at some point.

in the 442 he knows he has more freedom and expresses his creativity a whole lot more.

Someone chase Leo with a knife so he knows what its like to RUN with the ball again.

his game needs to be simplified and he needs to start running down the right channels again.  having him drift around the field behind the front line doesn't do much for him or the team.

he's got good attributes, but struggles to consistently cross well on the move, which reduces the effect of his speed.  this is especially the case when he is playing on the left.

i reckon he could be devastating in the a-league, but is not played correctly

Leo:

1.  Take three LESS step overs than you normally do before you try and beat your man.
2.  Look up to see who/where you are crossing to.

Do one of two things Leo.

Either:

( a ) Run at, past, around or through the defenders and get into the penalty area and force the defenders to bring you down, winning a penalty

OR

( b ) Look up to see who/where you are crossing to, and cross it.

Please don't run at, past, around or through the defenders and then cross it without looking up just before you get into the box.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Rather see him come back next season itching to get back into it, than coming back and doing a half-assed effort as has been of late.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

If that's Leo's season good luck to him with the recovery.Sounds to be like Tony Lochead's injury and may take as long to recover from.
Hope he comes back with the same spark that Lochead has been showing since he got back.

Agree. Seems to have lost a bit of confidence as well. He was brilliant at the start of last season but then dropped off and has never got back to that standard.

He's great, he didn't even know me and while he was making my hot chocolate he chatted away to me like we were friends. Great service.
