Why doesn't he play the ball first time into the box?
Quite a few times we had them stretched but he took too long and bang the chance had gone..
Anyone else notice this?

yip. Some were raving about him last night saying he was the best thing since sliced bread but really, he was still a bit sh*t. how many balls were crossed into the box last night ?
I bet it was in the single figures. He plays with no urgency. OMG like, WAKE UP MATE !

CROSS IT MATE! GET IT IN THE BOX!

I saw last night more as NQF loosing than us winning tbh. Bertos maybe beat his man but still some of his options I thought weren't the best.
Of course at his rate I should be stoked he scored :P

Leo should've got the cross in earlier about 2 or 3 times but you guys are ignoring the fact that he usually beat 2 players to get into that position and that he put in two beautiful balls for Greenacre that on another day would've been goals (good defending by Hughes)

Yeah twice he tried to lay it back square for the man on the edge. Once timmy shanked it, and the other, Lia didnt even get it and it got intercepted. Still think he had a good game though.
I think its pretty well known that if you can, you take every oppourtunity to take the ball inside the box like he did, he just needed to dink them over to the far post

Yes.
He was better last night, but still far too much dithering around when he was in a crossing position. Final ball is not good.

Yeah finally some other people aggree with my frustrations!!
He can beat 2 guys to the ball, then run at pace up thier end of the field then instead of heading goalwards he stays parrellel (sp? lol) with the touch line then slows right down then the moments passed by! And its not like this has only just started happening. He's always been like that. I think he knows that Ricki will pick him just about every week no matter how crap he's been playing

Yeah finally some other people aggree with my frustrations!!
I often wonder about the love affair some people have with Leo. He does plenty of nice stuff but in my opinion I find him frustrating. His crossing from a dead ball is at least 75% of the time rubbish, His work rate is poor, especially when compared to greenacre (although his work rat puts most to shame), he seems to be a very reactive player, in that he rarely makes a run in anticipation and why the hell does he think he can take a free kick from thirty metres. He scored one against perth last year (with a big deflection) but aside from that.... ??He can beat 2 guys to the ball, then run at pace up thier end of the field then instead of heading goalwards he stays parrellel (sp? lol) with the touch line then slows right down then the moments passed by! totally agree, I think they guy is talented, but hugely frustrating with his lack of effort at crucial points in the game.....Daniel is very similar, talented but no real work ethic

I think it's because he has the same syndrome as nearly every other Phoenix player, can't-cross syndrome

More like the 'look up to cross but only short little Greenie is in the box'-syndrome.
You guys are way too harsh on Leo. He works harder than Ifill and is better than Daniel - why would Ricki drop him?

I agree. He may struggle with his crossing and have stupid boots and hair but he can at least beat players with his pace

Does he actually have pace???? If he does it is not what one would call blistering.

At the World Cup he reached the top speed of any All White. But no, wouldn't call it blistering pace.

Yes, yes and yes. In a sports psychology book I saw last week it mentioned decision making. Leo appears not to make quick decisions. Might be worth (assuming he hasn't already) having some time with a psychologist.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

To open another can of worms connected to this one, and not just Leo Bertos...
But us pulling the trigger... Quite often someone will make a break, maybe have one defender and the goal keeper and an opportunity to shoot and we just hold it up.
Hold it up until all the defenders are just about back... (and help arrives too obviously).
But by then we miss out on a golden opportunity.
So frustrating. I don't think it happens as much as it used to, but I really do wish we were a bit more confident with having a pop, having a shot when we have the opportunity.

intersting coment about leo in the article on stuff
"Nancarrow said Leo Bertos was the most remarkable athlete at the club. "As soon as he's finished a beep test he could do it again. He's a freak. His rate of recovery is unbelievable."
so Leo is a fitness freak, and should be able to run a lot harder than he currently does - so he's just a lazy arse??

Hahaha totally agree. Its been a few years since i last did it, and if youre not flat on your arse and damn near throwing up by the time you finish then your missing the point of doing it in the first place...

I think we're possible missing the point of what the fitness guy in the article was trying to say.
I'm sure Leo is knackered at the end of the beep test, but his recovery rate is so freakish that he's ready to go again in a minute or so, whereas most of us would still be on the ground dying.

I'm assuming that means he has a fast recovery? which applied to a game should mean he can make more runs forward and back more often. therefore when Leo goes missing in a game its not due to lack of fitness its cos he's lazy, bored or otherwise occupied. Is that not how you read it?.

Interesting question. I've seen this many times with many teams. I always end up asking it Is it a perceived fault or is it reality? I remember being at Goodison ( in the mid 80s) and this was the question being asked. I'd just got back there and thought they were using their chances well but the crowd about were really getting on their backs.... Mmm.... I remember thinking that is was it familiarity breeding contempt... is it the same here? much to ponder....

Hmm hes got the best fitness/recovery rate, yet he gets subbed most games.
He should be pressing the back line with hi pace. Ward has started to give him some decent service I think.
Also, Last week, he ended up playing sole striker and greeny played further back. Think Leo a ctually looks quite good as a cou nterattacking player. Can out pace people so he should make the most of it

I dunno .... people talk about his perceived pace.... how often does he use it if he has it? I struggle to recall to many times when he has gone past a defender with pace, taken the ball to the bi line and whipped in a pin poit cross....??He should be pressing the back line with hi pace.
