That's why threads like this are stoopid, how do you define the 'best' player? Guy with the best skills, or work rate, or effectiveness for the team, or the guy with biggest heart, etc?
The notion is very subjective, and therefore the answers are consequently very subjective, and then we start arguing over stupid things. Which in itself is stoopid.

Well, that's what you should have put in the title then.

Simple, eh?

We had this debate on the podcast. I think it was 3 votes for Sigmund and 1 (me) for Smeltz. Might be wrong about that.

I tend to think you need the keeper most, because they are the only ones that can use their hands. But, Im not convinced Paston is our "best" player - so I am still confused

Sigmund for Most-Improved, Smeltz for best player.

So Siggy has taken a massive leap in ability during the last year? I dont think he has. He always had the ability, he's just applying it at a higher level.

Siggy is then just in form.

I was gonna say the same, but Kwasnik's goal scoring record for us tipped it for me.

None stack up to George but sadly we let him slip through our fingers.

He was destined for big things.

If you look at the best player as the one you would most hate to be unavailable, then I'm sure it would have to be Smeltzy. Everyone else is replaceable (using our squad).

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Which makes it all the more annoying that he is the one going..

I think Siggy, Bertos/Mckain and Smeltzy have all been good, respective of their positions. I would have to choose Ben Sigmund though, great from day 1.

It always ceases to amaze me.. how people latch onto the Keith Quin factor..
Keith used to imortilise one player for the All Blacks each game, whether they were playing well or not.. Jonah Lomu was one of his favourites.. liabilty without the ball..

Sigmund is a decent player, has done really well and impressed with the step up from NZFC to A-League. Is he the best player so far, probably not. His first touch lets him down at least a few times each game.

This is Sigmunds second go at this level after playing with the Kingz under Dugdale, think it was season four, I think he has also played in a State League in Australia.

We all love the battler...

What a strange post! I don't think anybody's suggesting that Siggy is the most skilful, most talented player in the team, or that he hasn't made a mistake all season. I haven't read posts from anyone who is blind to his limitations.

I'm going for Siggy because, in my opinion, he has been the most consistent performer so far. I'm also very impressed with his attitude so, from that perspective, yes I do love the battler.

Name me one player in the team whose first touch doesn't let them down at least a few times each game.

Not quite sure of the relevance of his previous stint with the Kingz or his State League career?

Who would your 'best player of the season so far' be then?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

To Jag,

I haven't got a huge amount of time to reply in full.

The comments re playing in the old NSL relate to people stating that he has done well making the step up from NZFC. My point is is he has already played at this level. Before anyone gets upset there was life before the A-League

The thread is Best Player this Season, on the field week in week out is he the Best player?, the comments re touch were to justify why I don't think he is.

If attitude is the criteria for the best player this season.. thats your call..

Now that you've explained, that's a fair call about the NSL.

Attutude isn't my criteria for deciding on the best player. It could be for the worst tho'.

As I explained earlier, consistency is what I'm basing my  decision on.  As has been said elsewhere, it's very difficult to define "best player". What constitutes 'best' is very subjective.  I happen to think Dodd and Sigmund have been our most consistent performers, week in week out, so far this season and, consequently, have been two of our best players.

Best player would have to be the one that week in week out makes the greatest contribution to the team winning. Smeltz with 10 goals would have to be right up there. But to me the ttransformation from early season losers to late season title contenders has come from guys like Super Leo...who has bought pace and verve to the attack and must be leading with the number of assists, MCCain moving to DM has given our midfield some backbone and Siggy has bought in that gutsy never say die attitude.

How much did the pace and verve cost? Maybe we should buy some more.
