I'm looking to take my boy to this weekends match as its on his 4th birthday, and he's already a bit of a Phoenix & Yellow Fever boy. (Knows most of the chants already too, apart from the ones about the referees!)

Was wondering if anyone knew how i can make this really special for him, maybe get him to meet a player or the team, be one of the 'mascots' that walk on the field etc.

Who is the best person to talk to, or basically, where should i start?

Appreciate any comments or help :)

Nothing further to add to the previous 'helpful' suggestions but big ups to you as a parent - taking your wee one all the way from Whanganui to nix games.

I bet he does know the ones about the referee (he just doesn't let on).

My 7 year old is always trying to catch the key word in the "you're so sh*t its unbelievable" chant which I'm not prepared to help him with! At least there's a non-swear word ref one which I'm always happy to sing along with him!

It's pretty hard to act as a good role model when there are some horrendous decisions!

I've blown my credibility with the kids a few times and vented at the ref (his name begins with H).

They also know the various chants (as opposed to their age of innocence last season) and know when the YF are saying the "s" or "f" words.

I've just told him he's got to figure it out himself first - don't think it will take much longer - once he has I'll probably sing those ones with him as well - although I shouldn't!

Bloody education system these days, kids should be able to decipher language a lot quicker than that!

Phonetics at the Phoenix.  You could teach him alliteration

Rang the club, and they got my email, so now just waiting to see if they can do anything. Will be stoked if they can, but if they can't, maybe i can start a happy birthday chant for him in the YF zone :P

Actually it would be both phonics and contextual styles in FZ - very modern educational approach.

Last season due to my inept attempt to prevent the inevitable, juniorette used to sing at home "The referee's a banker" and junior junior was initially puzzled as to why the ref worked in a bank.

They're somewhat more aware this season.

Just got a call from David at the Phoenix, and they've organised something special for my boy. No meeting the players unfortunately, but he's going to be so stoked!

Thanks to all suggestions here, and of course to team at the Wellington Phoenix HQ.

Thank you so much.

Great news

Any hints on what they are doing?

They've organised some really cool seats for us. And apparently they pan the camera across so he'll be able to see himself up on the big screen. He'll be SO excited about that.

Surely they could have got Mulligan to come and sit with your boy for a while. What does he do game days?

Doesn't he work behind the counter where the chips are sold?
