Blasphemy
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Two "chaps" behind me were in conversation at Newtown Park on Saturday.
First: "I didn't get to see the Phoenix match".
Second: "You didn't miss much".
Dairyflat turned and then responded very bluntly and very emotionally.- <------------------------> ( after all we're a family forum. )

Very surprised by my own tone. I really felt that the guy's comment was almost a personal affront. Starting to feel a bit "passionate" about Phoenix.

Sad that that attitude is around - especially when they are watching footy of a "lower" level. Must have been Aucklanders surely!

Probably our cheerful friend, and Auckland's No.1 fan,  Happyted

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

The lack of passion for all things football is exactly what the problem has always been in NZ. At least in Wellington we are some way toward proving it wrong.I know pre-season (I think it was the Sydney game), some friends were going to go but changed their minds because "it was too cold." My reply to that was to remind them that this is why football has never amounted to much in this country. People don't go to the football if it's too cold. They go to shopping malls and garden centres and sh*t like that.

If it's good enough for your team, why isn't it good enough for you? I asked. Dress up warm FFS!!! It's not that hard.

Thats bizzar, second man did not enjoy the phoenix game so he goes to watch team wellington????

The game on friday was probably the most "heartbraking" game this season, maybe second man was still a bit bitter over the result.

re have you seen PAO's crowds this year??

8000 average at best (even the OSFP derby only had 14,000) - and only 2-3 flares in entire season

I think In Greece fans dont go for important and meaningful reasons or in protest, not because its too cold or because you have some gardening to do.

All I want to  say about those two fans it that it was their loss not ours who showed up to cheer on the lads. The one that did show was obviously expecting Premier league Man Utd V Arsenal quality footie. You aint gonna get it - except in spells when Daniel is in the mood.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I dunno, interrupting someone else's private conversation to scold them for having an opinion different to yours seems pretty rude to me.

Does anybody else think there is a subtle but increasing amount of snobbery being shown by a minority of YF members recently?

Know what you're saying TX, but I don't think it's snobbery.

If somebody sitting behind you somewhere said that Public Enemy were rubbish, and that Fear of A Black Planet was the biggest load of old sh*te they'd ever heard, wouldn't you be tempted to say something?

If they talked like that I wouldn't quite be calling them "fans" either.  Phoenix are way better then what we've had before.  I lived in auckland and was one of the 200 odd crowd watching the kingz and knights games.  Way better down here. Atmosphere and gameplay.  Keep it up guys.

Yep I saw the Nix for the first time v Melbourne pre-season and it was pretty damn cold that day. I'd rather it be cold than 40 degrees (like last years grand final! that was death) That pre season game was bloody good though - we produced probably the best goal or close to it that i've seen from us this year.

btw the QLD game wasn't exactly of the highest quality (even by A-League standards) so I understand the guys comment.

So $7 and free program to watch local based players in a national league wher they are sitting top equal  vs paying $23 to watch the Phoenix play in the A-League where they aere sitting 3rd bottom.

The biggest problem with the crowd is that if the Phoenix were winning and in the top 4, there would be crowds of 12000 each week.

if we were bottom I'd still be there, being a fan is about supporting your team, no matter what

if we were in the top four, yes, i agree crowds would be up, especially as the seasons roll on, possibly to 16-18k +, I'd suggest

and whilst I do go and watch team Welly, my heart rate doesn't increase 24 hours before kick-off like it does for the Phoenix

watching the Phoenix is like no other event in NZ sport - it's an unbeatable feeling

Yep it's been almost hard work watching the phoenix this year - heart palpatations a plenty. There havent been many dull Nix games this year - pretty much every one has been good viewing. (though the results haven't gone our way most of the time)

seems that Phoenix fever hasn't reached all of Chch yet...was walking through town today in my nix shirt and some guy came up and said "How could you support such a crap team?"

it was at this point i spotted the Wrexham badge on his shirt. he didnt like being asked what it was like to be going back to the conference

I must admit, I'd rather have a smaller crowd of genuine supporters than a larger crowd with a bunch of "fair weather" fans who only support teams who are winning.

I've got a couple of workmates who give me stick because the Phoenix aren't in the top four, there negative attitude really gets up my nose.
They say "We'd go to the games if they actually won a few"
To be honest I've said on more than one occasion "If thats your attitude we'd rather not have you there"

I cannot believe you would actually say this. Do you not understand that the Phoenix is a business? It's very survival depends on getting those "fair weather fans" along and converting them into full time fans.

Every team in the world has attendances that go up and down with results, that's just the way it is. But when people get along to a game or come on this website and encounter this kind of snobbish attitude it's bound to put them off. Poor old Tony P must be wondering whether it's even worth marketing the games at all. This is the same attitude that led to a hard-core of so-called Phoenix supporters chanting "we're here to watch the football" at the Beckham game because they took offense to a Mexican wave! Talk about missing the point.

The irony is that if you ever get your wish of a "small crowd of genuine supporters" the Phoenix will go out of business. Sort yourselves out you muppets.

Although I disagree about Mexican waves , I agree with you on this one TX.

We need as many punters as possible through the gates every week. Doesn't matter if they don't know Jack sh*t about football. Apparently, we need a crowd of around 10k every week to break even so, if our "regulars" amount to 7 or 8000, the shortfall will have to be made up by casual 'fans'.  The more of these casual supporters we can get coming to games, the higher the chance that a percentage of them might become regulars at the games.

I brought 5 work people along to the last game. They wouldn't normally go, but were looking for something to do after our work thing and I think they could sense how hyped I was about the game. At one point one of them asked me, with genuine surprise, 'Do the Phoenix always play like this?'. She meant 'play well'. I think people who don't go to the games, and just hear the results, tend to underestimate the team.
