Crowds....different thread but to add my bit, I still struggle to convince the casual wellingtonian along to games. Weather helps,  economic times, results, performance; ultimately this town can cough up 10,000 fans on a regular basis which in a 15,000 stadium creates its own atmosphere.  At Westpac it justs feels empty. Long term if Wellington can keep the licence, build the boutique stadium, the fans will fill it and the atmosphere will be unique. The trick is passion, win lose or draw....every regular plays his/her part. Patrick's conga line, santa hats, 12 pubs, Back Bencher, uniquely different.  Don't be ultras, be contras!

Random post over and out.....Scotty to the transporter room!

The one comment on this thread that I do find a bit odd is Patricks - aside from the club being new and the noveltly factor, what has really changed from 2007? People then spoke of the team doing well and the atmosphere being unique as factors in increasing the crowd, and I think that they are still relevant now.  I'd be interested in the variety of reasons for everything being so different.

Good post mate.

No one is saying NOTHING has changed. I think everyone agrees with the part I have bolded. It's not either/or, it is AND. So those things are still true. And no one is saying they are not. And no one is saying we shouldn't do that. We should.

But, as to the reasons. I don't profess to know what ALL of them are...

ONE thing that is different, and which matters, is time has passed. Back then it was new. A string of poor results was "teething troubles", or "to be expected now and then". Now, there's history. There's two immediately preceeding seasons where we have finished DFL and runner up for the wooden spoon.

So what? Well that history (good and bad) is what people soak up into the collective consciousness. Now the Phoenix are carrying the weight of being an under-performing club. We haven't won. We haven't made a grand final. And we have won a wooden spoon.

The casual fans absorb that. It is a factor (and I am only claiming to be _A_, one amongst many, not THE factor) in their decision as to whether or not to go to games. It contributes heavily I think. People think "Ahhh, nah, they never win, they're useless, why would I go?"

So, being exposed to people who are passionate about the club is important.

Fever Friday is more important now than ever before.

We have to win back the people who might or might not attend. Because right at the moment most of them are not going to attend.

Yup, the general public see the team as one that loses all the time. I get sarcastic remarks about how bad they are all the time at work, even from people who go occasionally. Just yesterday I pointed out that we actually won last week when I woman I work with who goes to games with her husband and kids a few times a year said "I see the Phoenix are on a losing streak again" to me. After we lost the first game and I was talking about it at work people were saying stuff like "what do you expect?" and " shouldn't you be used to that by now?".

Will take a sustained string of good results AND some positive media about the club for a change to dent that kind of attitude I think.

Might be worthwhile pointing out the amazing string of results the Lions have had this season if they are rugby fans.  I've found when saying this at work the rugby heads tend to go quite quiet

I think a different principle applies here. People who go to Phoenix games don't want to be the only one.

Martin Amis has confessed to standing on Kings Rd (some years ago) with a mate handing out their phone numbers to every youngish woman who passed in the hope that sooner or later they'd get lucky. I think the mate did better than Amis.

Everyone...

What are YOU doing to increase the crowd at the WCW game 7.30pm Friday November 7th?

Imagine if EACH one of us on the forums got 2 people to attend who were not going to attend otherwise...

Do the people you work with know that the Phoenix are playing on Friday 7th November at 7.30pm?

We have a blackboard at work in the kitchen area...

Just next to it someone has put up a Phoenix season schedule poster:

I am wearing a Phoenix scarf at work every day this season. People stop and talk about it with me. This week there has been a significant shift in the conversation starters...

Last week it was all about the crowd numbers crisis and the impending doom of the license renewal failure (Thanks Michael Cockerill!)

This week it has all been about the great result on Sunday.

Baby steps people. Baby steps.

I have the season schedule up at work by my desk which looks out over a corridor.  Have had a few people stop and chat to me about the games (never crowds, always results)

I use to carry my Nix scarf everyday or the last 2 seasons, so will start doing that again.  Can only help

Sevens ticket prices slashed

Last updated 05:00 31/10/2014

Ticket prices for next year's Wellington Sevens have been slashed as organisers seek to boost flagging interest in the event.

With just 13,000 tickets sold so far, the cost of general entry tickets will be cut from $199 to $149, while those in the premium zone will drop from $235 to $195.

New general manager Steve Dunbar, 10 days into the job, said tickets sales had been slow since their release last month and fans had told organisers that prices were part of the reason.

"It's fair to say that ticket sales . . . haven't been as good as we've hoped," he said. "I think the fans have spoken."

Prices had already been reduced by $10 after this year's tournament saw the worst ticket sales since the event began.

Dunbar has replaced former boss Marty Donoghue, who resigned earlier this year after just one tournament in charge.

He said that, on top of reduced prices, there would also be more promotion of the event, including trying to drum up student interest by offering the chance to those who bought four or more tickets to have $3000 paid towards their university fees.

Organisers would be contacting people who had already bought tickets to arrange a partial refund, based on the difference between what they paid and the new prices.

Dunbar, whose sports management experience has included working on the Rugby World Cup in 2011 and previously as tournament director and chief executive of NZ International Sevens, said he was reviewing other aspects of the tournament, including the entertainment.

The event had to be a good mix between action on the field and entertainment off it.

"I think to date Wellington has done that particularly well. If you look at some of the other tournaments in the series, it is still the shining light . . . and I'll just come in and have a look at that, and see if there are any enhancements that can be made."
