I was just up in the North Island and I thought I'd just say how much I enjoyed the match against Sydney even though we lost. The crowd was amazing. It was great to be able to talk to a lot of the players and get their autographs (and I got one of Tony Lochhead's socks!).

I'll definitely come up for a few games next season, well done lads and lasses.

P.S. Tony P, if you're reading this, you laughed when I asked you to bring the Phoenix down to Christchurch, thing is I wasn't joking, please bring them.

Phoenix in chch could mean my first trip to the South Island...

I'd rather there than Auckland

You know, the Nix could pre season a few friendlies before the official preseason comps involving A League teams. Play local selections. CHCH, AK, Whangarei, Tauranga, Dunedin, New Plymouth, Napier, Nelson.

Just an idea.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Phoenix vs NZFC teams would be awesome. Pre-season tour playing the 7 non-Wellington teams, would be enough to make me want to rent a van!

LG, I know it was oversight but you seem to have left Pukekohe off that list

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Except that in June the NZFC sides don't exist.  Players are with winter clubs or overseas, or not training at all for a league that doesn't start until November.

As long as it was just friendlies or warmup games. The real season's games stay in Wellington. Period.

I agree, why give Auckland anything.

Look at the way they treat the rest of the country when in comes to the NZFC. Those Waitakere bogans make you sick the way they bully the comp, and Auckland City what a bunch of over paid  boof heads.

Just ring the A league clubs in Australia and tell them we would like to donate them 3 points, because thats all your doing taking a game to them.

THEY CANT EVEN HOST A FLOWER SHOW

Hang on, doesn't the A-league pre-season just about coincide with the European pre-season? Bring a couple of top Euro sides here. Play a couple of games in Australia then come here.

At least the Phoenix will GET a pre-season next time up.

I agree with that. If Christchurch got a team I would be disgruntled (to say the least) if I payed for a season ticket and then they played a game in Invercargill

Agreed.

This is a slighter larger issue (in this instance if you want to take the point of view I am speaking)

The Wellington city has absolutely put the Aucklanders to shame when it comes to supporting the professional franchise in terms of football playing in Australia. No doubt. But is the support for the Phoenix strictly Wellington based? No.

As with any club, the more people through the turnstyles, the more the club is a success off the field, which invariably translates into results via support on the field. If the nix had an average crowd of 2000 turning up, they would be getting rubbished everywhere. As such they only get rubbish by the ignorant (i.e. rugby heads) because by and large, they have been a success to those that follow the sport.

So how do you get more fans. Take the product to the masses.

It was a delight hearing Stu Scott and Mark Sorenson talk about the Phoenix pre-season and saying how cool it was to go along and watch. I'm making the assumption that these guys aren't ardent football supporters, but they are examples of people that have turned up, said 'oh I like this' and have embraced it. How many other cities could this happen in. Chch? yeah possibly. Auckland? most likely nothing to blow people away, but you have to try grow a fan base.

In England, the clubs don't take home games away because they have 1 team for each city. We have 1 team for the country against 7 Australian outlets. So what is to stop the nix trying to grow the fan base and taking the team on the road at home? If you can get say 13000 turn up in Chch, you would have to view that as a success because the average crowds in Wellington are slightly less (I believe).

There is merit to the idea, but only if played out correctly.

Yes to pre season games out of Wellington but a bloody big NO to any league games being played out of Wellington for a number of seasons at least.Surely the easiest fan base to build is our own and until crowds get any where near the 20000 mark on a constant basis then league games stay here.

In NZ, we don't have 1 team for the country against 7 Australian outfits. From the people I know we most definately see it as we have 1 team for Wellington against anyone and everyone else.

The best song we sing is "We're not Auckland anymore" and it gets belted out for a good reason.
We are Wellington and proud of it. We wanted to show that Wellington can do what no one else has been able to and because of that I believe we are all fiercly proud that we've achieved that.
I look forward to every home game like a kid at Xmas. I've been starved of proffesional football since coming to NZ 34 years ago, or at least an atmosphere.

So, I'm going to be selfish and say keep all the games in Wellington because we've now earned the right to say we are Wellington Vs everone else, including the rest of NZ.

Auckland's public  couldn't do it, in fact all they did was run the game in to ridicule. We even had the embarresment of being tarred with their apathetic brush being refered to as the  "New Zealand" Knights.
Is there any more reason why we want the games to stay in Wellington where there is a loyal fan base. Sorry, I just don't want to miss a single game if I can help it.
Games stay here for me. Come and visit, you'll be welcolmed with open arms, a beer and a packet of throat lozengers for your impending laryngitus.

By the way, the "Rugby Heads" in this city have only good things to say about it all. A quiet admiration. Somehow I just don't think that would happen in Canterbury. The eye patches are just too big.

Stays here for me. Double period!

I'd like to see some pre-season matches played out of Wellington, but not too far. Places like Palmy and Napier where we are likely to attract new fans who can/will make the trip down to Wellington for regular season matches. Matches in places like Christchurch and Auckland are likely to be a novelty more than anything, we can't really expect most Cantabrians/JAFA's to come to Welly on a regular basis for the Phoenix, as the people who do are sadly a minority. A totally awesome minority who do deserve the convenience of seeing us play Christchurch, Auckland, Pukekohe etc...but a minority nonethless.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Phoenix play in other cities...to promote local football there. Phoenix vs Auckland, with the aim of getting more fans to ACFC/Waitak matches and hopefully some more TV viewers. But I think first and foremost should be building a fanbase who'll be in the stands, and there'd be more success targeting cities in the Hurricanes province (forgive the rugby metaphor!)

Good call Robbwatson. A pre-season match at Palmy or Napier mightactually  be more valuable. TV rights are also worth considering though. I'm not sure if any money filters down to the Phoenix from these but if sky pay more for the product then that must ultimately be of value to the Phoenix.

Preseason games are an awesome way to promote footy in NZ. Spred the word etc, may as well have all of NZ supporting the Phoenix whilst we are the  only proffessional football team. MKaybe us playing in Chch will spark the interest of a potential investor to get a south island team up and running theprof2008-01-15 13:57:35
