I wonder if that could actually be a possibility.

Apparently Celtic are selling Scott McDonald, as well as possibly Samaras...although I believe they are looking to buy as well.

Killen is finished there IMO, but whether he sees that, I dunno.

No guest signings during the last 6 weeks remember.

You've gotta be pretty careful making generalisations about what country we should get players from. It's fairly loose rationale I think. To stick up for Chinese players - the Chinese player Fan Zhiyi played in the Scottish league for a while and was great. There's obviously a lot of Chinese players who would be great playing for the Phoenix. Unfortunately it seems that 'Johnny' wasn't as good as we thought he'd be.

I doubt we would be able to afford, even a fraction, of his wages.

^ true.

He really needs to do something. it's a waste of time staying at Celtic. Gametime is crucial leading upto the worldcup.

What about this bit?

Ricki and the coaching staff have found Jiang a pleasure to work with and he made a lot of friends here in Wellington and won a lot of fans as a player and a person.

Can they reveal themselves please?

I wasn't a huge fan, admittedly, but when I met him he seemed nice enough, though on the pitch he was no good.

So call me a half-fan.

My understanding is that Killen is on approximately 6000 GBP per week. So about $13,000 NZD - how much are we paying generally?

Chen is one of the finest players to have borne a Phoenix shirt (at least I think I recall him getting to wear one once).

He will be sorely missed.

You're way off there.

This has been discussed in other threads but players are on anything from $50k to $200k. Many of our starting XI would be earning less than $100k.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I disagree. If he was one of the finest players to dom the Phoenix Shirt he would have played many more games.

I said don't quote me on it.

wasn't too far off tho, max $200k equates to just under $4kp/w. For some reason thought the max was $250k.

Yeah but talking about maximums is a bit misleading.

Ifill and Greenacre would be the only two anywhere near that.

After that you're talking about Durante and McKain who aren't earning $3k a week...

I thought McKain was our secret Marquee so would be on far more the 3k in theory.

Lol at this:

"Chen played two games off the bench for the Phoenix for a total of 33 minutes of Hyundai A-League experience.

Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said the young striker had been a valuable part of the Phoenixs Hyundai A-League 2009/10 campaign."

He turned up and did his job and didn't disgrace himself or blow up like Ferrante and Mulligan usually do.

Its not his fault he was signed to a league out of his depth, thats a recruitment issue. People said he was pleasant, he didn't trash us upon leaving or cause any issue or speak ill of anyone (that I know of) while he was here so I fail to see why people put the boot into him. Yeah its alot of PR speak but what else do you honestly expect?

 Well said.

I actually thought Mulligan's situation was the same i.e. a recruitment issue not an attitude or behavioral issue - wasn't aware he has played up beyond natural disappointment at not being selected ?

Mulligan, Ferrante and Elrich get/got crap because they were rubbish on the pitch. G** got sh*t for that and being a bit of a rotten apple.

As much as Chen didn't play, in the 33 odd mins he did play, he wasn't having a howler. Much like Rojas, he's not up to that level yet but in the game time he has had, he hasn't had a meltdown or a shocker.

Elrich and G** had an attitude problem and, in Elrich's case, bad mouthed the club after he left - so they both deserve some stick.

Mulligan and Ferrante aren't up to the standard now required to be a competitive in the A-League. That however doesn't mean that they aren't playing to their potential, albeit limited, or have an attitude problem. Hence my view that, in the case of Mulligan and Ferrante, it is a recruitment not performance issue - the recruitment issue however manifests itself in performance. However maybe there is behind the scenes drama I'm not aware of....

I had read stories on this site saying that Elrich was a pretty good dude and interacted well with the fans and helped the young guys at training despite what the impression he gave us. I don't recall him bad mouthing the club, but not to say it didn't happen.

You have a valid point on Ferrante and Mulligan. I don't think that Ferrante actually found his true position on the field because a central midfielder he is not. As for Mulligan, as much as I don't rate him, I feel for him a bit. He bounced around overseas and wound up here. He was hailed as a masterstroke signing when in fact his history of bouncing around and not playing at clubs is what we are seeing now. I think if it wasn't for that fact that he had a 2 year deal, Plodder might have stayed instead of him. The unfortunate thing is if they are not good enough for the A League club in the bottom half of the table, there isn't many other options for them. This stint could well be the career killer for Mulligan.
