I am quite happy for David Beckham to come to Wellington. It is not for me to stop him.

However, I am concerned about the lack of public accountability for public money

As a present City councillor I do not know and have never been involved in the decision to fund his visit.

The public and the Council have a right to know. You have that right.

We have no idea how much of your money has been spent.

It's a mayor's secret , from us and from you, and it shouldn't be.

As mayor I will not have secrets from the council. I will seek and listen to councillors' views.
That is paramount.

WATERFRONT

By the way-did you know that this mayoral election is the last battle for your Waterfront?
Did you know that the present plan is for twelve huge construction sites  the entire legth of the waterfront, with enormous disruption for years to come? is that what you want?
The Waterfront should be for your enjoyment, not a developer's paradise.

Have a look at the photo essay on my website: www.heleneritchie.org and you will see what is going to happen and where.

You can save the watefront with your vote. Make sure you vote. it is your future that is at stake, your City, your Waterfront, and your children's
.

My email address is heleneritchie@clear.net.nz.

Thank you

Helene Ritchie

Mayoral Candidate.
Vote HELENE RITCHIE MAYOR  1.

Not my rates money, living in the Hutt Valley does have benefits

The money is budgeted for so I dont think it's important for everyone to know how much is being spent on each event. If the councillors didnt want it spent they shouldnt have voted to have the fund in the first place. Part of being a vibrint go ahead city is to attract these events and the rewards that go with having them.

A dog with a bone :)

Great to see a response already - Helene Ritchie has my vote (although she does seem to have too many vowels in her name).

Hello my name is John McGrath and I am a Mayoral Candidate.

1) I have been to every game apart from one which I watched live in Sydney. It was interesting hearing the commentators suprise at the obvious potential of the Phoenix. I have also met most the players since they first arrived in Wellington including Ricki Herbert who has since become a friend. I have been close friends with Terry and his family for many years. Terry and I have thrown some of the best parties in Wellington ever and organised a massive party at the Cannes film festival with our mutual friend Warriors owner Eric Watson in 2003.

2) A) I want the council to be much more involved in the promotions and publicity of the Phoenix. Terry and his management team can only do so much and the council should do as much as possible to fill the stadium. I don't think they have done nearly enough. Market research will indicate where the gaps are that need to be filled and I will impliment a council marketing/promotion plan that will add to the exising promotion. I promise you as Mayor I will fill the Stadium. I also want to see an awards dinner at the end of the season to recognise the outstanding palyers supporting by the council.
B) Football is the most popular sport in the world. It is only because of old traditions that Rugby is so popular. This is changing quickly. The success of the Phoenix will only help encourage more youth to take up the sport as now is is more accepted. This provides the council with a great opportunity to get behind the sport and promote it and yes put more money towards its development.
3) As I stated in the Capital Times this provides Wellington with a great opportunity to promote football in Wellington, New Zealand and Wellington internationally. What a great thing to happen to Wellington. I'm excited. What the council needs to do it make his visit economic by promoting the hell out of it. This can be achieved.
Be sure to look out for my Mayoral billboard truck at the next game. It says in jest "I'll play for the  Wellington Phoenix if John McGrath is Mayor" I hope you can see the humorous side of this and who knows David Beckman will like Wellington so much he just might want to stay.
Cheers John

Words are cheap, performance counts off the field as well as on.  Jack Ruben's got wisdom, success and experience on his side, just like the Phoenix are developing right now.  Only prob with the special event fund that our mayor has put into Beck's visit is no bugger is told what's happening (apart from Rex, presumably).  Strangely enough, it's our money.

Jack's track record includes employing 3000 people in a major business. Every business he's been involved with has been a success.  He's pushed the netball courts and started the '12 courts' campaign.  He's for the Phoenix.

You guys love Terry.  Give another successful guy whose got the energy of Beckham on his night off a go.

Cheers, guys.

Mayoral Candidate Rob Goulden on David Beckham and Galaxy Team

I think the Phoenix is a fantastic Team to have here in Wellington. I have attended two games so far at the stadium and really enjoyed them. I hope to attend some more.

It would be great if David Beckham comes here with the Galaxy Team. Congratulations to Terry.

I have expressed concern in the Newspaper because as a Politician I am accountable for ratepayers money whether its residential rates or commercial. Secondly as an elected member I should have a say in that decision and so should ratepayers. All the other decisions like the golf tournament, V8 car race and stock exchange sign have been put before the full Council. Thats democratic.

I wish the Phoenix Team the best of luck for the rest of the season.

Hey Kerry

Like the promotion of football & Wgtn, how about a contribtuion to saving sport on the Wharf (3,000 Wellingtonians play indoor football every week) and I am sure the majority of them support the Phoenix.   We'd like to know you support Footy as the grassroots level too.  How are you going to save sport on the wharf??

Indoor & outdoor footy player who's crazy about the Phoenix.

Jack Ruben is 100% behind the wharf football, just as he's 100% against knocking the building over to put up a Hilton (or any other building) on the outer 'T'.  Ask the guys down there . . he's all for keeping that thing happening.

Jack's vigour and energy come from a lifetime of keeping fit and playing sport.  We rant about the culture capital, which is all good and true, but sports facilities and top level teams like The Phoenix are all good in encouraging sport, including professional sport.

Vote Jack guys.  You won't regret it.  Put whats'er name out.

top marks to all the candidates who have braved the forum so far

there are probably a couple of others game enough somewhere out there - so pass the word on

and those candidates still with lingering doubts about political and media clout of Yellow Fever please note the latest cultural feature story on the Scoop website - www.scoop.co.nz - "Phoenix Fans Give Council Opponents Ankle Tap".

if we dont like what we see over the next three years we will be standing Frankie Mac as our Yellow Fever mayoral candidate next time round.

The council has a duty to support any event or project in the city that will bring benifits.

I do not beleive the stadium is big enough to take the full crowd that will flock to Wgtn to see DB.
He is bigger worlwide that Peter Jackson.

The narrow minded people kill the rebirth of the Wgtn st race let vote for football supporters and then push for better sporting facilities for all sports from the council funds.

We need to push for the new indoor stadium of a good size to be built and to cater for more that netball. Also with ample parking. This would take the weight off the need to us TSB etc.

John's post rather got my goat...so shallow and transparent it reads like a check list of 'What YF might want to hear'.

Anyone voting for a candidate on the basis of one theme (ie in this case, sport) deserves what they get. Seek out the complete package first.

I certainly wont be voting based on sport. That is far too broad.

I will be focused entirely on what candidates can do for the Phoenix.

I would like to see how some of the candidates answer some really tough topics. for example "What is your view on climate change... and its direct implications on the Wellington Phoenix" or

"Do you think NZ should stay Nuclear free and make Ross Aloisi our honorary king"

Someone said John drops more names than a pro's black book, which is unfair.  He throws good parties so - hey! - if that's what turns you on go vote 'em.  Hell of a way to run a city, but are we to criticize as we agonise over issues like rating disparity, the waterfront clutter, green spaces, safety in the streets, transparent decision-making.  They're just boring, aren't they?
